Is 34.5–17; 63.1–6; Jer 49.7–22; Ezek 25.12–14; 35.1–15; Amos 1.11–12; Mal 1.2–5 This is the prophecy of Obadiah — what the Sovereign LORD said about the nation of Edom.
The LORD will Punish Edom
The LORD has sent his messenger to the nations,
and we have heard his message:
“Get ready! Let us go to war against Edom!”
2The LORD says to Edom,
“I will make you weak;
everyone will despise you.
3Your pride has deceived you.
Your capital is a fortress of solid rock;
your home is high in the mountains,
and so you say to yourself,
‘Who can ever pull me down?’
4Even though you make your home
as high as an eagle's nest,
so that it seems to be among the stars,
yet I will pull you down.
5“When thieves come at night,
they take only what they want.
When people gather grapes,
they always leave a few.
But your enemies have wiped you out completely.
6Descendants of Esau, your treasures have been looted.
7Your allies have deceived you;
they have driven you from your country.
People who were at peace with you have now conquered you.
Those friends who ate with you have laid a trap for you;
they say of you, ‘Where is all that cleverness he had?’
8“On the day I punish Edom,
I will destroy their clever men
and wipe out all their wisdom.
9The fighting men of Teman will be terrified,
and every soldier in Edom will be killed.
Reasons for Edom's Punishment
10“Because you robbed and killed
your brothers,#1.10 your brothers: The Israelites were descended from Jacob, who was the brother of Esau, the ancestor of the Edomites. the descendants of Jacob,
you will be destroyed and dishonoured for ever.
11You stood aside on that day
when enemies broke down their gates.
You were as bad as those strangers
who carried off Jerusalem's wealth
and divided it among themselves.
12You should not have gloated
over the misfortune of your brothers in Judah.
You should not have been glad
on the day of their ruin.
You should not have laughed at them
in their distress.
13You should not have entered the city of my people
to gloat over their suffering
and to seize their riches
on the day of their disaster.
14You should not have stood at the crossroads
to catch those trying to escape.
You should not have handed them over to the enemy
on the day of their distress.
God will Judge the Nations
15“The day is near when I, the LORD,
will judge all nations.
Edom, what you have done
will be done to you.
You will get back what you have given.
16My people have drunk a bitter cup of punishment
on my sacred hill.#1.16 sacred hill: Mount Zion (see Zion in Word List).
But all the surrounding nations will drink
a still more bitter cup of punishment;
they will drink it all and vanish away.
The Victory of Israel
17“But on Mount Zion some will escape,
and it will be a sacred place.
The people of Jacob will possess
the land that is theirs by right.
18The people of Jacob and of Joseph will be like fire;
they will destroy the people of Esau
as fire burns stubble.
No descendant of Esau will survive.
I, the LORD, have spoken.
19“People from southern Judah will occupy Edom;
those from the western foothills will capture Philistia;
Israelites will possess the territory of Ephraim and Samaria;
the people of Benjamin will take Gilead.
20The army of exiles from northern Israel
will return and conquer Phoenicia
as far north as Zarephath.
The exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sardis
will capture the towns of southern Judah.
21The victorious men of Jerusalem
will attack Edom and rule over it.
And the LORD himself will be King.”

Edom’s Arrogance and Ruin
1The vision of Obadiah. Thus says Adonai Elohim concerning Edom: We have heard a report from Adonai— and an envoy has been sent among the nations: “Arise and let us rise up against her in battle.”
2Behold, I will make you least among the nations, you will be greatly despised.
3The arrogance of your heart has deceived you— living in the clefts of the rock—his dwelling place is lofty, saying in his heart: ‘Who shall bring me down to the earth?’
4Even if you soar like the eagle, and even if you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down.’” declares Adonai.
5“If thieves came to you, if robbers by night— how ruined you would be!— would they keep stealing after they had enough? If grape-gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleaning?
6How Esau will be ransacked, and how his hidden treasures searched out!
7All your allies will force you to the border. The men that are at peace with you will deceive you and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a trap under you. (He has no discernment.)
8In that day,” —declares Adonai— “will I not destroy the wise men from Edom and understanding from the hill country of Esau?
9Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be shattered—so everyone will be cut off from the hill country of Esau by slaughter.
10“Because of your violence to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.
11On the day that you stood aloof—on the day that strangers carried away his wealth, while foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem— you were just like one of them.
12You should not look down on your brother on the day of his disaster, nor should you rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. You should not speak proudly in the day of their distress.
13Do not enter the gate of My people in the day of their disaster. Yes, you. Do not gloat over their misery in the day of their disaster. Yes, you— do not loot their wealth in the day of their calamity.
14Do not stand at the crossroad to cut down his fugitives, and do not imprison his survivors in the day of distress.
The House of Jacob will be a Fire
15“For the day of Adonai is near against all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you. Your dealing will return on your own head.
16For just as you have drunk on My holy mountain, so all the nations shall drink continually. Yes, they will drink and gulp down, and then be as though they had never existed.
17But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and it will be holy. Then house of Jacob will dispossess those who dispossessed them.
18The house of Jacob will be a fire, and the house of Joseph flame, while the house of Esau will be straw—they will set them on fire and consume them. So there will be no survivors of the house of Esau.” —for Adonai has spoken.
19Then those of the Negev will possess the hill country of Esau, and those of the foothills the Philistines. Then they will possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, while Benjamin will possess Gilead.
20The exiles of this army of Bnei-Yisrael will possess what belonged to the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, while the exiles of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, will possess the cities of the Negev.
21The victorious will go up on Mount Zion to judge the hill country of Esau. Then the kingdom shall be Adonai’s.
