Is 10.5–34; 14.24–27; Zeph 2.13–15 This is a message about Nineveh, the account of a vision seen by Nahum, who was from Elkosh.
The LORD's Anger against Nineveh
2The LORD God tolerates no rivals;
he punishes those who oppose him.
In his anger he pays them back.
3The LORD does not easily become angry,
but he is powerful
and never lets the guilty go unpunished.
Where the LORD walks, storms arise;
the clouds are the dust raised by his feet!
4He commands the sea, and it dries up!
He makes the rivers go dry.
The fields of Bashan wither,
Mount Carmel turns brown,
and the flowers of Lebanon fade.
5Mountains quake in the presence of the LORD;
hills melt before him.
The earth shakes when the LORD appears;
the world and all its people tremble.
6When he is angry, who can survive?
Who can survive his terrible fury?
He pours out his flaming anger;
rocks crumble to dust before him.
7The LORD is good;
he protects his people in times of trouble;
he takes care of those who turn to him.
8Like a great rushing flood he completely destroys his enemies;#1.8 Some ancient translations his enemies; Hebrew its place.
he sends to their death those who oppose him.
9What are you plotting against the LORD?
He will destroy you.
No one opposes him more than once.
10Like tangled thorns and dry straw,
you drunkards will be burnt up!
11From you, Nineveh, there came someone full of wicked schemes, who plotted against the LORD. 12This is what the LORD says to his people Israel: “Even though the Assyrians are strong and numerous, they will be destroyed and disappear. My people, I made you suffer, but I will not do it again. 13I will now end Assyria's power over you and break the chains that bind you.”
14This is what the LORD has decreed about the Assyrians: “They will have no descendants to carry on their name. I will destroy the idols that are in the temples of their gods. I am preparing a grave for the Assyrians — they don't deserve to live!”

1The oracle concerning Nineveh—
the scroll of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:
Half-Acrostic: Yahweh Takes Vengeance against His Enemies
2Yahweh is a jealous God and avenging;
Yahweh is avenging and full of wrath.#Literally “a lord of wrath”
Yahweh takes vengeance against his enemies;
he rages against his adversaries.
3Yahweh is slow to anger but great in power;
he will certainly not allow the guilty to go unpunished.
He marches#Literally “His path” in storm wind and in gale;
storm clouds are the dust of his feet.
4He rebukes the sea and he dries up the rivers;
he makes all the rivers run dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither;#MT reads “languishes,” but the versions reflect “withers,” which also restores the acrostic
the blossom of Lebanon languishes.
5Mountains quake before him;
the hills shake apart.#Or “melt”
The earth heaves before him—
the world and all her inhabitants.
6His indignation—who can stand before it?
Who can endure his fierce anger?#Literally “the heat of his anger”
His wrath is poured out like fire;
rocks are shattered before#Or “by” him.
7Yahweh is good—a refuge in the day of distress;
he knows those who take refuge in him.
8But with a rushing torrent he will bring Nineveh to an end;
he will chase his enemies into darkness.
Yahweh Will Destroy Nineveh
9What#Or “Why …?” do you plot against Yahweh?
He will completely destroy it;#Literally “he will make a complete destruction”
trouble will not rise up a second time!
10For like entangled thorns,
and like their drink which is drunk,
they will be consumed like fully dry chaff.
11From you goes out one who plots evil against Yahweh,
one who plans wickedness.
Yahweh Will Deliver Judah and Destroy Nineveh
12Yahweh says this:
“Even though they are powerful and likewise many,
even so they will be cut off and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,#That is, Judah
I will afflict you#That is, Judah no longer.
13And now, I will break his yoke from upon you;
I will snap your bonds.”
14Yahweh has commanded concerning you:
“Your name will no longer be sown.
I will cut off the idols and images#Literally “the idols and the molten idols” from the temple#Literally “house” of your gods;
I will send you to the grave#Literally “I will make your grave” because you are worthless.”
15#Nahum 1:15–2:13 in the English Bible is 2:1–14 in the Hebrew Bible Look! On the mountains!
The feet of the one who brings good tidings,
the one who proclaims peace!
“Celebrate a festival, O Judah,
Fulfill your vows!
For he will not invade you again;
the wicked one is cut off completely!”
