The Temptation of Jesus
(Mt 4.1–11; Mk 1.12–13)
1Jesus returned from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit and was led by the Spirit into the desert, 2where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. In all that time he ate nothing, so that he was hungry when it was over.
3The Devil said to him, “If you are God's Son, order this stone to turn into bread.”

Deut 8.3
But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone.’ ”
5Then the Devil took him up and showed him in a second all the kingdoms of the world. 6“I will give you all this power and all this wealth,” the Devil told him. “It has all been handed over to me, and I can give it to anyone I choose. 7All this will be yours, then, if you worship me.”

Deut 6.13
Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’ ”
9Then the Devil took him to Jerusalem and set him on the highest point of the Temple, and said to him, “If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here. 10#Ps 91.11For the scripture says, ‘God will order his angels to take good care of you.’ 11#Ps 91.12It also says, ‘They will hold you up with their hands so that not even your feet will be hurt on the stones.’ ”

Deut 6.16
But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
13When the Devil finished tempting Jesus in every way, he left him for a while.
Jesus Begins his Work in Galilee
(Mt 4.12–17; Mk 1.14–15)
14Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news about him spread throughout all that territory. 15He taught in the synagogues and was praised by everyone.
Jesus is Rejected at Nazareth
(Mt 13.53–58; Mk 6.1–6)
16Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went as usual to the synagogue. He stood up to read the Scriptures 17and was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written:
18 #
Is 61.1–2 (LXX) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind;
to set free the oppressed
19 and announce that the time has come
when the Lord will save his people.”
20Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All the people in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him, 21as he said to them, “This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read.”
22They were all well impressed with him and marvelled at the eloquent words that he spoke. They said, “Isn't he the son of Joseph?”
23He said to them, “I am sure that you will quote this proverb to me, ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You will also tell me to do here in my home town the same things you heard were done in Capernaum. 24#Jn 4.44I tell you this,” Jesus added, “prophets are never welcomed in their home town.

1 Kgs 17.1
“Listen to me: it is true that there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for 3.5 years and a severe famine spread throughout the whole land. 26#1 Kgs 17.8–16Yet Elijah was not sent to anyone in Israel, but only to a widow living in Zarephath in the territory of Sidon. 27#2 Kgs 5.1–14And there were many people suffering from a dreaded skin disease who lived in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was healed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
28When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were filled with anger. 29They rose up, dragged Jesus out of the town, and took him to the top of the hill on which their town was built. They meant to throw him over the cliff, 30but he walked through the middle of the crowd and went his way.
A Man with an Evil Spirit
(Mk 1.21–28)
31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, where he taught the people on the Sabbath. 32#Mt 7.28–29They were all amazed at the way he taught, because he spoke with authority. 33In the synagogue was a man who had the spirit of an evil demon in him; he screamed out in a loud voice, 34“Ah! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are: you are God's holy messenger!”
35Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” The demon threw the man down in front of them and went out of him without doing him any harm.
36The people were all amazed and said to one another, “What kind of words are these? With authority and power this man gives orders to the evil spirits, and they come out!” 37And the report about Jesus spread everywhere in that region.
Jesus Heals Many People
(Mt 8.14–17; Mk 1.29–34)
38Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and they spoke to Jesus about her. 39He went and stood at her bedside and ordered the fever to leave her. The fever left her, and she got up at once and began to wait on them.
40After sunset all who had friends who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; he placed his hands on every one of them and healed them all. 41Demons also went out from many people, screaming, “You are the Son of God!”
Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah.
Jesus Preaches in the Synagogues
(Mk 1.35–39)
42At daybreak Jesus left the town and went off to a lonely place. The people started looking for him, and when they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving. 43But he said to them, “I must preach the Good News about the Kingdom of God in other towns also, because that is what God sent me to do.”
44So he preached in the synagogues throughout the country.

Satan Tempts Jesus
1Then #(Is. 11:2; 61:1); Matt. 4:1–11; Mark 1:12, 13Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and #Ezek. 3:12; Luke 2:27was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2being tempted for forty days by the devil. And #Ex. 34:28; 1 Kin. 19:8in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
3And the devil said to Him, “If You are #Mark 3:11; John 20:31the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, #Deut. 8:3‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ”
5Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for #(John 12:31; 14:30; Rev. 13:2, 7)this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
8And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, #Deut. 6:13; 10:20; Matt. 4:10‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
9#Matt. 4:5–7Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10For it is written:
#Ps. 91:11‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’
11and,
#Ps. 91:12‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
12And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, #Deut. 6:16‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
13Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him #(John 14:30; Heb. 4:15; James 4:7)until an opportune time.
Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry
14#Matt. 4:12Then Jesus returned #John 4:43in the power of the Spirit to #Acts 10:37Galilee, and #Matt. 4:24news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15And He #Ps. 22:22; Matt. 4:23taught in their synagogues, #Is. 52:13being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16So He came to #Matt. 2:23; 13:54; Mark 6:1Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, #Mark 1:21; John 18:20; Acts 13:14–16; 17:2He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18“The#Is. 49:8, 9; 61:1, 2; Matt. 11:5; 12:18; John 3:34 Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To #(Dan. 9:24)set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is #Matt. 1:22, 23; Acts 13:29fulfilled in your hearing.” 22So all bore witness to Him, and #(Ps. 45:2); Matt. 13:54; Mark 6:2; Luke 2:47; (John 1:14, 17)marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, #John 6:42“Is this not Joseph’s son?”
23He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in #Matt. 4:13; 11:23Capernaum, do also here in #Matt. 13:54; Mark 6:1Your country.’ ” 24Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no #Matt. 13:57; Mark 6:4; John 4:44prophet is accepted in his own country. 25But I tell you truly, #1 Kin. 17:9; James 5:17many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27#2 Kin. 5:1–14And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were #Luke 6:11filled with wrath, 29#Luke 17:25; John 8:37; 10:31and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30Then #John 8:59; 10:39passing through the midst of them, He went His way.
Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit
31Then #Is. 9:1; Matt. 4:13; Mark 1:21He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32And they were #Matt. 7:28, 29astonished at His teaching, #Luke 4:36; (John 6:63; 7:46; 8:26, 28, 38, 47; 12:49, 50)for His word was with authority. 33#Mark 1:23Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? #Luke 4:41I know who You are—#Ps. 16:10; Is. 49:7; Dan. 9:24; Luke 1:35the Holy One of God!”
35But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed
38#Matt. 8:14, 15; Mark 1:29–31Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they #Mark 5:23made request of Him concerning her. 39So He stood over her and #Luke 8:24rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.
Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset
40#Matt. 8:16, 17; Mark 1:32–34When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. 41#Mark 1:34; 3:11; Acts 8:7And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, #Mark 8:29“You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
And He, #Mark 1:25, 34; 3:11; Luke 4:34, 35rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.
Jesus Preaches in Galilee
42#Mark 1:35–38; Luke 9:10Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; 43but He said to them, “I must #Mark 1:14; (John 9:4)preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44#Matt. 4:23; 9:35; Mark 1:39And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
