Jonah 2

Jonah's Prayer
1From deep inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God:
2“In my distress, O LORD, I called to you,
and you answered me.
From deep in the world of the dead
I cried for help, and you heard me.
3You threw me down into the depths,
to the very bottom of the sea,
where the waters were all round me,
and all your mighty waves rolled over me.
4I thought I had been banished from your presence
and would never see your holy Temple again.
5The water came over me and choked me;
the sea covered me completely,
and seaweed was wrapped round my head.
6I went down to the very roots of the mountains,
into the land whose gates lock shut for ever.#2.6 the land whose gates lock shut for ever: A reference to the world of the dead (see 2.2).
But you, O LORD my God,
brought me back from the depths alive.
7When I felt my life slipping away,
then, O LORD, I prayed to you,
and in your holy Temple you heard me.
8Those who worship worthless idols
have abandoned their loyalty to you.
9But I will sing praises to you;
I will offer you a sacrifice
and do what I have promised.
Salvation comes from the LORD!”
10Then the LORD ordered the fish to spew Jonah up on the beach, and it did.

Jonah 2
2
1Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish:
2“I called out to the LORD in my distress, and he answered me.
From the belly of the underworld#2.2 Heb Sheol I cried out for help;
you have heard my voice.
3You had cast me into the depths in the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounds me.
All your strong waves and rushing water passed over me.
4So I said, ‘I have been driven away from your sight.
Will I ever again look on your holy temple?
5Waters have grasped me to the point of death;
the deep surrounds me.
Seaweed is wrapped around my head
6at the base of the undersea#2.6 Heb lacks undersea. mountains.
I have sunk down to the underworld;
its bars held me with no end in sight.
But you brought me out of the pit.’
7When my endurance#2.7 Endurance here renders the same Heb word as life in 1:14 and death in 2:5. was weakening,
I remembered the LORD,
and my prayer came to you,
to your holy temple.
8Those deceived by worthless things lose their chance for mercy.#2.8 Heb uncertain
9But me, I will offer a sacrifice to you with a voice of thanks.
That which I have promised, I will pay.
Deliverance belongs to the LORD!”
10Then the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto the dry land.
