The Covenant Box is Brought to Jerusalem
(1 Chr 13.1–14; 15.25—16.6, 43)
1Once more David called together the best soldiers in Israel, a total of 30,000 men, 2#Ex 25.22and led them to Baalah#6.2 Probable text (see 1 Chr 13.6) to Baalah; Hebrew from Baaley, or from the leaders. in Judah, in order to bring from there God's Covenant Box, bearing the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned above the winged creatures.#6.2 winged creatures: See Word List. 3#1 Sam 7.1–2They took it from Abinadab's home on the hill and placed it on a new cart. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the cart, 4with Ahio walking in front. 5David and all the Israelites were dancing and singing with all their might#6.5 One ancient translation (and see 1 Chr 13.8) and singing with all their might; Hebrew with all the fir trees. to honour the LORD. They were playing harps, lyres, drums, rattles, and cymbals.
6As they came to the threshing place of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out and took hold of the Covenant Box. 7At once the LORD God became angry with Uzzah and killed him because of his irreverence.#6.7 Probable text his irreverence; Hebrew unclear. Uzzah died there beside the Covenant Box, 8and so that place has been called Perez Uzzah#6.8 Perez Uzzah: This name in Hebrew means “Punishment of Uzzah”. ever since. David was furious because the LORD had punished Uzzah in anger.
9Then David was afraid of the LORD and said, “How can I take the Covenant Box with me now?” 10So he decided not to take it with him to Jerusalem; instead, he turned off the road and took it to the house of Obed Edom, a native of the city of Gath. 11#1 Chr 26.4–5It stayed there three months, and the LORD blessed Obed Edom and his family.
12King David heard that because of the Covenant Box the LORD had blessed Obed Edom's family and all that he had; so he fetched the Covenant Box from Obed's house to take it to Jerusalem with a great celebration. 13After the men carrying the Covenant Box had gone six steps, David made them stop while he offered the LORD a sacrifice of a bull and a fattened calf. 14David, wearing only a linen cloth round his waist, danced with all his might to honour the LORD. 15And so he and all the Israelites took the Covenant Box up to Jerusalem with shouts of joy and the sound of trumpets.
16As the Box was being brought into the city, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and jumping around in the sacred dance, and she was disgusted with him. 17They brought the Box and put it in its place in the Tent that David had set up for it. Then he offered sacrifices and fellowship offerings to the LORD. 18When he had finished offering the sacrifices, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD Almighty 19#1 Chr 16.43and distributed food to them all. He gave each man and woman in Israel a loaf of bread, a piece of roasted meat,#6.19 a piece of roasted meat; or a cake of dates. and some raisins. Then everyone went home.
20Afterwards, when David went home to greet his family, Michal came out to meet him. “The king of Israel made a big name for himself today!” she said. “He exposed himself like a fool in the sight of the servant women of his officials!”
21David answered, “I was dancing to honour the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and his family to make me the leader of his people Israel. And I will go on dancing to honour the LORD, 22and will disgrace myself even more. You#6.22 One ancient translation You; Hebrew I. may think I am nothing, but those women will think highly of me!”
23Michal, Saul's daughter, never had any children.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
1Ch 13:1–14; 15:25–16:3
1Again David gathered all of the chosen men in Israel, thirty thousand. 2#1Sa 4:4; 7:1David and all of the people who were with him arose and went from Baalah of Judah to bring up the ark of God, so named for the name of the Lord of Hosts who sits enthroned among the cherubim that are upon it. 3#1Sa 6:7They loaded the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio the sons of Abinadab were driving the new cart. 4#1Ch 13:7They brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on the hill, and Ahio was walking in front of the ark. 5#1Ch 13:8; Ps 150:3–5Meanwhile, David and the entire house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord with all sorts of instruments made of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals.
6#Nu 4:15; 1Ch 13:9When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had stumbled. 7#1Sa 6:19; 1Ch 15:13The Lord became angry against Uzzah, and God struck him down on the spot for his irreverence. He died there beside the ark of God.
8David became angry because of the outburst of the Lord against Uzzah; that place is called Perez Uzzah to this day.
9#Ps 119:120David feared the Lord that day, and he thought, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10#1Ch 26:4–8So David did not allow the ark of the Lord to be brought to him in the City of David. Instead, David redirected it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11#Ge 30:27; 39:5The ark of the Lord remained at the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household.
12#1Ki 8:1When it was reported to King David, “The Lord has blessed Obed-Edom and everything that belongs to him, for the sake of the ark of God,” David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13#1Ki 8:5; Nu 4:15When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, David would sacrifice an ox and a fattened steer. 14#Ex 15:20; 1Sa 2:18David danced before the Lord with all of his might, and he wore a linen ephod. 15So David and the whole house of Israel escorted the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the horn.
16#1Ch 15:29; 2Sa 3:14When the ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked down from the window, and upon seeing King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she thought contemptuously of him in her mind.
17#1Ch 15:1; 2Ch 1:4They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had erected for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18#1Ki 8:55When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people before the Lord of Hosts. 19#Ne 8:10He distributed to all of the people, the entire multitude of Israel, both men and women, one bread cake, one date cake, and one raisin cake to each one. Then all of the people left, each to his house.
20#2Sa 6:16; 6:14; Jdg 9:4David returned to bless his household, but Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet him. She said, “How the king of Israel has dignified himself today, exposing himself this day in the sight of his servant’s slave girls like one of the rabble might shamelessly expose himself.”
21#1Sa 13:14; 15:28Then David responded to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me over your father and over everyone in his household, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. I was celebrating before the Lord. 22I will humble myself even more than this and be abased in my own eyes. But by the maidservants, of whom you have spoken, I will be held in honor.”
23#Mt 1:25Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
