King Ahaziah of Judah
(2 Kgs 8.25–29; 9.21–28)
1Some Arabs had led a raid and killed all King Jehoram's sons except Ahaziah, the youngest. So now the people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah king as his father's successor. 2-3Ahaziah became king at the age of 22,#22.2–3 Some ancient translations (and see 2 Kgs 8.26) 22; Hebrew 42. and he ruled in Jerusalem for one year. Ahaziah also followed the example of King Ahab's family, since his mother Athaliah — the daughter of King Ahab and granddaughter of King Omri of Israel — gave him advice that led him into evil. 4He sinned against the LORD, because after his father's death other members of King Ahab's family became his advisers, and they led to his downfall. 5Following their advice, he joined King Joram of Israel in a war against King Hazael of Syria. The armies clashed at Ramoth in Gilead, and Joram was wounded in battle. 6He returned to the city of Jezreel to recover from his wounds, and Ahaziah went there to visit him.
7God used this visit to Joram to bring about Ahaziah's downfall. While Ahaziah was there, he and Joram were confronted by a man named Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had chosen to destroy the dynasty of Ahab. 8As Jehu was carrying out God's sentence on the dynasty, he came across a group made up of Judean leaders and of Ahaziah's nephews that had accompanied Ahaziah on his visit. Jehu killed them all. 9A search was made for Ahaziah, and he was found hiding in Samaria. They took him to Jehu and put him to death. But they did bury his body out of respect for his grandfather King Jehoshaphat, who had done all he could to serve the LORD.
No member of Ahaziah's family was left who could rule the kingdom.
Queen Athaliah of Judah
(2 Kgs 11.1–3)
10As soon as King Ahaziah's mother Athaliah learnt of her son's murder, she gave orders for all the members of the royal family of Judah to be killed. 11Ahaziah had a half-sister, Jehosheba, who was married to a priest named Jehoiada. She secretly rescued one of Ahaziah's sons, Joash, took him away from the other princes who were about to be murdered and hid him and a nurse in a bedroom at the Temple. By keeping him hidden, she saved him from death at the hands of Athaliah. 12For six years he remained there in hiding, while Athaliah ruled as queen.

II Chronicles 22
22
Ahaziah Reigns in Judah
1Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem made #2 Chr. 21:17; 22:6Ahaziah his youngest son king in his place, for the raiders who came with the #2 Chr. 21:16Arabians into the camp had killed all the #2 Chr. 21:17older sons. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, reigned. 2Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was #2 Chr. 21:6Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri. 3He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother advised him to do wickedly. 4Therefore he did evil in the sight of the Lord, like the house of Ahab; for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction. 5He also followed their advice, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram. 6#2 Kin. 9:15Then he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which he had received at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Azariah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.
7His going to Joram #Judg. 14:4; 1 Kin. 12:15; 2 Chr. 10:15was God’s occasion for Ahaziah’s downfall; for when he arrived, #2 Kin. 9:21–24he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, #2 Kin. 9:6, 7whom the Lord had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab. 8And it happened, when Jehu was #2 Kin. 9:22–24executing judgment on the house of Ahab, and #2 Kin. 10:10–14; Hos. 1:4found the princes of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers who served Ahaziah, that he killed them. 9#(2 Kin. 9:27)Then he searched for Ahaziah; and they caught him (he was hiding in Samaria), and brought him to Jehu. When they had killed him, they buried him, “because,” they said, “he is the son of #1 Kin. 15:24Jehoshaphat, who #2 Chr. 17:4; 20:3, 4sought the Lord with all his heart.”
So the house of Ahaziah had no one to assume power over the kingdom.
Athaliah Reigns in Judah
10#2 Kin. 11:1–3Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs of the house of Judah. 11But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took #2 Kin. 12:18Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being murdered, and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah so that she did not kill him. 12And he was hidden with them in the house of God for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.
