Mark 8
8
1 In those days, again, when there was a great crowd, and they did not have anything to eat, calling together his disciples, he said to them:
2 "I have compassion for the multitude, because, behold, they have persevered with me now for three days, and they do not have anything to eat.
3 And if I were to send them away fasting to their home, they might faint on the way." For some of them came from far away.
4 And his disciples answered him, "From where would anyone be able to obtain enough bread for them in the wilderness?"
5 And he questioned them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven."
6 And he instructed the crowd to sit down to eat on the ground. And taking the seven loaves, giving thanks, he broke and gave it to his disciples in order to place before them. And they placed these before the crowd.
7 And they had a few small fish. And he blessed them, and he ordered them to be placed before them.
8 And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up what had been leftover from the fragments: seven baskets.
9 And those who ate were about four thousand. And he dismissed them.
10 And promptly climbing into a boat with his disciples, he went into the parts of Dalmanutha.
11 And the Pharisees went out and began to contend with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, testing him.
12 And sighing deeply in spirit, he said: "Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, if only a sign will be given to this generation!"
13 And sending them away, he climbed into the boat again, and he went away across the sea.
14 And they forgot to take bread. And they did not have any with them in the boat, except one loaf.
15 And he instructed them, saying: "Consider and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod."
16 And they discussed this with one another, saying, "For we have no bread."
17 And Jesus, knowing this, said to them: "Why do you consider that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet know or understand? Do you still have blindness in your heart?
18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? Do you not remember,
19 when I broke the five loves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments you took up?" They said to him, "Twelve."
20 "And when the seven loaves were among the four thousand, how many baskets of fragments did you take up?" And they said to him, "Seven."
21 And he said to them, "How is it that you do not yet understand?"
22 And they went to Bethsaida. And they brought a blind man to him. And they petitioned him, so that he would touch him.
23 And taking the blind man by the hand, he led him beyond the village. And putting spit on his eyes, laying his hands on him, he asked him if he could see anything.
24 And looking up, he said, "I see men but they are like walking trees."
25 Next he placed his hands again over his eyes, and he began to see. And he was restored, so that he could see everything clearly.
26 And he sent him to his house, saying, "Go into your own house, and if you enter into the town, tell no one."
27 And Jesus departed with his disciples into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way, he questioned his disciples, saying to them, "Who do men say that I am?"
28 And they answered him by saying: "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others perhaps one of the prophets."
29 Then he said to them, "Yet truly, who do you say that I am?" Peter responded by saying to him, "You are the Christ."
30 And he admonished them, not to tell anyone about him.
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and by the high priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 And he spoke the word openly. And Peter, taking him aside, began to correct him.
33 And turning away and looking at his disciples, he admonished Peter, saying, "Get behind me, Satan, for you do not prefer the things that are of God, but the things that are of men."
34 And calling together the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone chooses to follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whoever will have chosen to save his life, will lose it. But whoever will have lost his life, for my sake and for the Gospel, shall save it.
36 For how does it benefit a man, if he gains the whole world, and yet causes harm to his soul?
37 Or, what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 For whoever has been ashamed of me and of my words, among this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man also will be ashamed of him, when he will arrive in the glory of his Father, with the holy Angels."
39 And he said to them, "Amen I say to you, that there are some among those standing here who shall not taste death until they see the kingdom of God arriving in power."

Mark 8

Feeding the Four Thousand
1In those days, #Matt. 15:32–39; Mark 6:34–44; Luke 9:12the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, 2“I have #Matt. 9:36; 14:14; Mark 1:41; 6:34compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.”
4Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?”
5#Matt. 15:34; Mark 6:38; John 6:9He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”
And they said, “Seven.”
6So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. 7They also had a few small fish; and #Matt. 14:19; Mark 6:41having blessed them, He said to set them also before them. 8So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. 9Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away, 10#Matt. 15:39immediately got into the boat with His disciples, and came to the region of Dalmanutha.
The Pharisees Seek a Sign
11#Matt. 12:38; 16:1; Luke 11:16; John 2:18; 6:30; 1 Cor. 1:22Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. 12But He #Mark 7:34sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, #Matt. 12:39no sign shall be given to this generation.”
Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod
13And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. 14#Matt. 16:5Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. 15#Matt. 16:6; Luke 12:1Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
16And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”
17But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? #Mark 6:52; 16:14Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? 18Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19#Matt. 14:20; Mark 6:43; Luke 9:17; John 6:13When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?”
They said to Him, “Twelve.”
20“Also, #Matt. 15:37when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?”
And they said, “Seven.”
21So He said to them, “How is it #(Mark 6:52)you do not understand?”
A Blind Man Healed at Bethsaida
22Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a #Matt. 9:27; John 9:1blind man to Him, and begged Him to #Luke 18:15touch him. 23So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when #Mark 7:33He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything.
24And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.”
25Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. 26Then He sent him away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, #Matt. 8:4; Mark 5:43; 7:36nor tell anyone in the town.”
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
27#Matt. 16:13–16; Luke 9:18–20Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?”
28So they answered, #Matt. 14:2“John the Baptist; but some say, #Mark 6:14, 15; Luke 9:7, 8Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
29He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter answered and said to Him, #John 1:41; 4:42; 6:69; 11:27; Acts 2:36; 8:37; 9:20“You are the Christ.”
30#Matt. 8:4; 16:20; Luke 9:21Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection
31And #(Is. 53:3–11); Matt. 16:21; 20:19; Luke 18:31–33; 1 Pet. 1:11He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be #Mark 10:33rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be #Mark 9:31; 10:34killed, and after three days rise again. 32He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He #Mark 16:14; (Rev. 3:19)rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
Take Up the Cross and Follow Him
34When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, #(Matt. 10:38); Luke 14:27“Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35For #Matt. 10:39; Luke 17:33; John 12:25whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38#Matt. 10:33; Luke 9:26; 12:9For whoever #Rom. 1:16; 2 Tim. 1:8, 9; 2:12is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
