Jeremiah 14
14
1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the words of the drought.
2 "Judea has mourned. And its gates have fallen and become hard to discern on the ground. And the outcry of Jerusalem has ascended.
3 The greater ones have sent their lesser ones to the water. They went to draw water; they did not find water; they carried their vessels back empty. They were confounded and afflicted, and so they covered their heads.
4 Because of the devastation of the earth, because rain did not fall upon the earth, the farmers were confounded; they covered their heads.
5 For even the doe has given birth in the field, and then left it behind. For there was no grass.
6 And the wild donkeys stood upon the rocks; like dragons, they drew in the wind, but their eyes failed. For there was no grass."
7 "O Lord, if our iniquities have responded against us, let it be for the sake of your name. For our rebellions are many; we have sinned against you.
8 O Hope of Israel, its Savior in time of tribulation, why would you be like a sojourner in the land, and like a traveler turning aside for lodging?
9 Why would you be like a wandering man, like a strong man who is unable to save? But you, O Lord, are with us, and your name is invoked over us, so do not abandon us!"
10 Thus says the Lord to this people, who have loved to move their feet, and who have not rested, but who have not pleased the Lord: "Now he will remember their iniquities, and now he will visit against their sins."
11 And the Lord said to me: "Do not choose to pray for this people for good.
12 When they will fast, I will not heed their petitions. And if they offer holocausts and victims, I will not accept them. For I will consume them by the sword, and by famine, and by pestilence."
13 And I said: "Alas, alas, alas, O Lord God! The prophets are saying to them: 'You will not see the sword, and there will be no famine among you. Instead, he will give you true peace in this place.' "
14 And the Lord said to me: "The prophets prophesy falsely in my name. I did not send them, and I did not instruct them, and I have not spoken to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, and a divination, and a fraud, and a seduction from their own heart.
15 For this reason, thus says the Lord about the prophets who prophesy in my name, whom I have not sent, who say: 'Sword and famine will not be in this land.' By sword and famine those prophets will be consumed.
16 And the people, to whom they prophesy, will be cast into the streets of Jerusalem, due to famine and the sword, and there will be no one who may bury them, they and their wives, their sons and daughters, and I will pour out their own evil upon them.
17 And you shall speak this word to them: Let my eyes shed tears throughout the night and day, and let them not cease. For the virgin daughter of my people has been crushed by a great affliction, by a very grievous wound."
18 "If I go out into the fields: behold, those slain by the sword. And if I enter into the city: behold, those weakened by famine. Likewise, the prophet, too, and the priest, have gone into a land that they did not know.
19 Could you have utterly cast out Judah? Or has your soul abhorred Zion? Then why have you struck us, so much so that there is no health for us? We have waited for peace, but there is nothing good, and for the time of healing, and behold, trouble.
20 O Lord, we acknowledge our impieties, the iniquities of our fathers, that we have sinned against you.
21 For the sake of your name, do not give us over into disgrace. And do not dishonor in us the throne of your glory. Remember, do not make void, your covenant with us.
22 Could any of the graven images of the Gentiles send rain? Or are the heavens able to give showers? Have we not hoped in you, the Lord our God? For you have made all these things."

Sword, Famine, and Pestilence
1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the droughts.
2“Judah mourns,
And #2 Kin. 25:3; Is. 3:26her gates languish;
They #Jer. 8:21mourn for the land,
And #1 Sam. 5:12; Jer. 11:11; 46:12; Zech. 7:13the cry of Jerusalem has gone up.
3Their nobles have sent their lads for water;
They went to the cisterns and found no water.
They returned with their vessels empty;
They were #Job 6:20; Ps. 40:14ashamed and confounded
#2 Sam. 15:30And covered their heads.
4Because the ground is parched,
For there was #Jer. 3:3; Ezek. 22:24no rain in the land,
The plowmen were ashamed;
They covered their heads.
5Yes, the deer also gave birth in the field,
But left because there was no grass.
6And #Job 39:5, 6; Jer. 2:24the wild donkeys stood in the desolate heights;
They sniffed at the wind like jackals;
Their eyes failed because there was no grass.”
7O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us,
Do it #Ps. 25:11; Jer. 14:21for Your name’s sake;
For our backslidings are many,
We have sinned against You.
8#Jer. 17:13O the Hope of Israel, his Savior in time of trouble,
Why should You be like a stranger in the land,
And like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night?
9Why should You be like a man astonished,
Like a mighty one #Is. 59:1who cannot save?
Yet You, O Lord, #Ex. 29:45; Lev. 26:11; Ps. 46:5; Jer. 8:19are in our midst,
And we are called by Your name;
Do not leave us!
10Thus says the Lord to this people:
#Jer. 2:23–25“Thus they have loved to wander;
They have not restrained their feet.
Therefore the Lord does not accept them;
#(Jer. 44:21–23); Hos. 8:13He will remember their iniquity now,
And punish their sins.”
11Then the Lord said to me, #Ex. 32:10; Jer. 7:16; 11:14“Do not pray for this people, for their good. 12#Prov. 1:28; (Is. 1:15; 58:3–6); Ezek. 8:18; Mic. 3:4; Zech. 7:13When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and #Jer. 6:20when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But #Jer. 9:16I will consume them by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence.”
13#Jer. 4:10Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured #Jer. 8:11; 23:17peace in this place.’ ”
14And the Lord said to me, #Jer. 27:10“The prophets prophesy lies in My name. #Jer. 29:8, 9I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the #Jer. 23:16; Ezek. 12:24deceit of their heart. 15Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in My name, whom I did not send, #Jer. 5:12; Ezek. 14:10and who say, ‘Sword and famine shall not be in this land’—‘By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed! 16And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; #Ps. 79:2, 3; Jer. 7:32; 15:2, 3they will have no one to bury them—them nor their wives, their sons nor their daughters—for I will pour their wickedness on them.’
17“Therefore you shall say this word to them:
#Jer. 9:1; 13:17; Lam. 1:16‘Let my eyes flow with tears night and day,
And let them not cease;
#Is. 37:22; Jer. 8:21; Lam. 1:15; 2:13For the virgin daughter of my people
Has been broken with a mighty stroke, with a very severe blow.
18If I go out to #Jer. 6:25; Lam. 1:20; Ezek. 7:15the field,
Then behold, those slain with the sword!
And if I enter the city,
Then behold, those sick from famine!
Yes, both prophet and #Jer. 23:11priest go about in a land they do not know.’ ”
The People Plead for Mercy
19#Jer. 6:30; 7:29; 12:7; Lam. 5:22Have You utterly rejected Judah?
Has Your soul loathed Zion?
Why have You stricken us so that #Jer. 15:18there is no healing for us?
#Job 30:26; Jer. 8:15; 1 Thess. 5:3We looked for peace, but there was no good;
And for the time of healing, and there was trouble.
20We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness
And the iniquity of our #Neh. 9:2; Ps. 32:5; Jer. 3:25fathers,
For #Ps. 106:6; Jer. 8:14; 14:7; Dan. 9:8we have sinned against You.
21Do not abhor us, for Your name’s sake;
Do not disgrace the throne of Your glory.
#Ps. 106:45Remember, do not break Your covenant with us.
22#Zech. 10:1Are there any among #Deut. 32:21the idols of the nations that can cause #1 Kin. 17:1; Jer. 5:24rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
#Ps. 135:7Are You not He, O Lord our God?
Therefore we will wait for You,
Since You have made all these.
