Exodus 30
30
1 "You shall also make an altar, for the burning of incense, from setim wood,
2 having one cubit in length, and another in width, that is, four equal sides, and two cubits in height. Horns shall proceed from the same.
3 And you shall clothe it with the purest gold, both its grating and the walls around it, and also the horns. And you shall make for it a crown of gold in a circle,
4 and two gold rings under the crown on each side, so that the bars may be set in them and the altar may be carried.
5 Also, you shall make its bars of setim wood, and you shall overlay them with gold.
6 And you shall set the altar opposite the veil, which hangs in front of the ark of the testimony, before the propitiatory with which the testimony is covered, where I will speak to you.
7 And Aaron shall burn incense upon it, a sweet fragrance, in the morning. When he lights the lamps, he shall burn it.
8 And when he assembles them in the evening, he shall burn an everlasting incense before the Lord throughout your generations.
9 You shall not offer upon it incense of another composition, nor an oblation, nor a victim; neither shall you offer libations.
10 And Aaron shall pray over its horns once a year, with the blood of what was offered for sin. And he shall make atonement over it in your generations. It shall be the Holy of holies to the Lord."
11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
12 "When you have taken the sum of the sons of Israel, according to their number, each shall give a price for their souls to the Lord, and there will be no scourge among them, when they will be reviewed.
13 Then all those who pass shall give by name: one half shekel, according to the measure at the temple. A shekel has twenty obols. The half part of a shekel shall be offered to the Lord.
14 He who has been numbered from twenty years and above shall give the price.
15 The rich shall not add to the half shekel, and the poor shall diminish nothing.
16 And the money received, which was collected from the sons of Israel, you shall deliver for the uses of the tabernacle of the testimony, so that it may be a memorial of them before the Lord, and he may act favorably toward their souls."
17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
18 "You shall also make a bronze washtub with its base to wash in; and you shall place it between the tabernacle of the testimony and the altar. And when water has been added,
19 Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and feet in it:
20 when they enter the tabernacle of the testimony, and when they approach to the altar so as to offer incense to the Lord upon it,
21 otherwise, they may die. This shall be an everlasting law to him, and to his offspring, throughout their successions."
22 And the Lord spoke to Moses,
23 saying: "Take for yourself aromatics: of the first and best myrrh, five hundred shekels, and of cinnamon half as much, that is, two hundred and fifty shekels; of sweet flag similarly two hundred and fifty,
24 but of cassia, five hundred shekels by the weight of the sanctuary, and of the oil of olives the measure of a hin.
25 And you shall make the holy oil of unction, an ointment composed with the skills of a perfumer,
26 and with it you shall anoint the tabernacle of the testimony, and the ark of the testament,
27 and the table with its vessels, and the lampstand and it utensils, the altars of incense
28 and of holocaust, and all the items that pertain to their rituals.
29 And you shall sanctify everything, and they shall be the Holy of holies. He who will touch them must be sanctified.
30 You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and you shall sanctify them, so that they may exercise the priesthood for me.
31 Likewise, you shall say to the sons of Israel: 'This oil of unction will be holy to me throughout your generations.
32 The flesh of man shall not be anointed from it, and you shall not make any similar compound, for it has been sanctified and it shall be holy to you.
33 Whatever man will have composed such a thing and have given it to a stranger, he shall be exterminated from his people.' "
34 And the Lord said to Moses: "Take to yourself aromatics: stacte, and onycha, galbanum of sweet odor, and the clearest frankincense, all these shall be of equal weight.
35 And you shall make incense composed with the skills of a perfumer, diligently mixed, and pure, and most worthy of sanctification.
36 And when you have crushed all these into a very fine powder, you shall place some of it before the tabernacle of the testimony, in the place where I will appear to you. The Holy of holies shall this incense be to you.
37 You shall not make such a compound for your own uses, because it is holy to the Lord.
38 Whatever man will have made anything similar, so as to thoroughly enjoy its smell, he shall perish from his people."

Plans for the Incense Altar
1“Then make another altar of acacia wood for burning incense. 2Make it 18 inches square and 36 inches high,#30:2 Hebrew 1 cubit [46 centimeters] long and 1 cubit wide, a square, and 2 cubits [92 centimeters] high. with horns at the corners carved from the same piece of wood as the altar itself. 3Overlay the top, sides, and horns of the altar with pure gold, and run a gold molding around the entire altar. 4Make two gold rings, and attach them on opposite sides of the altar below the gold molding to hold the carrying poles. 5Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 6Place the incense altar just outside the inner curtain that shields the Ark of the Covenant,#30:6a Or Ark of the Testimony; also in 30:26. in front of the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—that covers the tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant.#30:6b Hebrew that covers the Testimony; see note on 25:16. I will meet with you there.
7“Every morning when Aaron maintains the lamps, he must burn fragrant incense on the altar. 8And each evening when he lights the lamps, he must again burn incense in the Lord’s presence. This must be done from generation to generation. 9Do not offer any unholy incense on this altar, or any burnt offerings, grain offerings, or liquid offerings.
10“Once a year Aaron must purify#30:10 Or make atonement for; also in 30:10b. the altar by smearing its horns with blood from the offering made to purify the people from their sin. This will be a regular, annual event from generation to generation, for this is the Lord’s most holy altar.”
Money for the Tabernacle
11Then the Lord said to Moses, 12“Whenever you take a census of the people of Israel, each man who is counted must pay a ransom for himself to the Lord. Then no plague will strike the people as you count them. 13Each person who is counted must give a small piece of silver as a sacred offering to the Lord. (This payment is half a shekel,#30:13 Or 0.2 ounces [6 grams]. based on the sanctuary shekel, which equals twenty gerahs.) 14All who have reached their twentieth birthday must give this sacred offering to the Lord. 15When this offering is given to the Lord to purify your lives, making you right with him,#30:15 Or to make atonement for your lives; similarly in 30:16. the rich must not give more than the specified amount, and the poor must not give less. 16Receive this ransom money from the Israelites, and use it for the care of the Tabernacle.#30:16 Hebrew Tent of Meeting; also in 30:18, 20, 26, 36. It will bring the Israelites to the Lord’s attention, and it will purify your lives.”
Plans for the Washbasin
17Then the Lord said to Moses, 18“Make a bronze washbasin with a bronze stand. Place it between the Tabernacle and the altar, and fill it with water. 19Aaron and his sons will wash their hands and feet there. 20They must wash with water whenever they go into the Tabernacle to appear before the Lord and when they approach the altar to burn up their special gifts to the Lord—or they will die! 21They must always wash their hands and feet, or they will die. This is a permanent law for Aaron and his descendants, to be observed from generation to generation.”
The Anointing Oil
22Then the Lord said to Moses, 23“Collect choice spices—12-1/2 pounds of pure myrrh, 6-1/4 pounds of fragrant cinnamon, 6-1/4 pounds of fragrant calamus,#30:23 Hebrew 500 [shekels] [5.7 kilograms] of pure myrrh, 250 [shekels] [2.9 kilograms] of fragrant cinnamon, 250 [shekels] of fragrant calamus. 24and 12-1/2 pounds of cassia#30:24a Hebrew 500 [shekels] [5.7 kilograms] of cassia.—as measured by the weight of the sanctuary shekel. Also get one gallon of olive oil.#30:24b Hebrew 1 hin [3.8 liters] of olive oil. 25Like a skilled incense maker, blend these ingredients to make a holy anointing oil. 26Use this sacred oil to anoint the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, 27the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and all its accessories, the incense altar, 28the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the washbasin with its stand. 29Consecrate them to make them absolutely holy. After this, whatever touches them will also become holy.
30“Anoint Aaron and his sons also, consecrating them to serve me as priests. 31And say to the people of Israel, ‘This holy anointing oil is reserved for me from generation to generation. 32It must never be used to anoint anyone else, and you must never make any blend like it for yourselves. It is holy, and you must treat it as holy. 33Anyone who makes a blend like it or anoints someone other than a priest will be cut off from the community.’”
The Incense
34Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather fragrant spices—resin droplets, mollusk shell, and galbanum—and mix these fragrant spices with pure frankincense, weighed out in equal amounts. 35Using the usual techniques of the incense maker, blend the spices together and sprinkle them with salt to produce a pure and holy incense. 36Grind some of the mixture into a very fine powder and put it in front of the Ark of the Covenant,#30:36 Hebrew in front of the Testimony; see note on 25:16. where I will meet with you in the Tabernacle. You must treat this incense as most holy. 37Never use this formula to make this incense for yourselves. It is reserved for the Lord, and you must treat it as holy. 38Anyone who makes incense like this for personal use will be cut off from the community.”
