Titus 1
1
1From Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ.
I was chosen and sent to help the faith of God's chosen people and to lead them to the truth taught by our religion, 2which is based on the hope for eternal life. God, who does not lie, promised us this life before the beginning of time, 3and at the right time he revealed it in his message. This was entrusted to me, and I proclaim it by order of God our Saviour.

2 Cor 8.23; Gal 2.3; 2 Tim 4.10 I write to Titus, my true son in the faith that we have in common.
May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour give you grace and peace.
Titus' Work in Crete
5I left you in Crete, so that you could put in order the things that still needed doing and appoint church elders in every town. Remember my instructions: 6#1 Tim 3.2–7an elder must be blameless; he must have only one wife,#1.6 have only one wife; or be married only once. and his children must be believers and not have the reputation of being wild or disobedient. 7For since a church leader is in charge of God's work, he should be blameless. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered, or a drunkard or violent or greedy for money. 8He must be hospitable and love what is good. He must be self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. 9He must hold firmly to the message which can be trusted and which agrees with the doctrine. In this way he will be able to encourage others with the true teaching and also to show the error of those who are opposed to it.
10For there are many, especially converts from Judaism, who rebel and deceive others with their nonsense. 11It is necessary to stop their talk, because they are upsetting whole families by teaching what they should not, and all for the shameful purpose of making money. 12-13It was a Cretan himself, one of their own prophets, who spoke the truth when he said, “Cretans are always liars, wicked beasts, and lazy gluttons.” For this reason you must rebuke them sharply, so that they may have a healthy faith 14and no longer hold on to Jewish legends and to human commandments which come from people who have rejected the truth. 15Everything is pure to those who are themselves pure; but nothing is pure to those who are defiled and unbelieving, for their minds and consciences have been defiled. 16They claim that they know God, but their actions deny it. They are hateful and disobedient, not fit to do anything good.

Titus’s Ministry in Crete
5The reason I left you in Crete # Ac 27:7,12-13 was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders # 1Tm 3:1-7; 5:17 in every town: 6one # 1Tm 3:2-4 who is blameless, # Col 1:22 the husband of one wife, having faithful # Or believing children not accused of wildness or rebellion. 7For an overseer, # Ac 20:28; Php 1:1; 1Pt 2:25 as God’s administrator, must be blameless, not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not addicted to wine, not a bully, not greedy for money, 8but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled, 9holding to the faithful message as taught, # Ac 2:42 so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching # 1Tm 1:10; 6:3; 2Tm 1:13; Ti 2:1 and to refute those who contradict it.
10For there are also many rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those from Judaism. # Lit the circumcision 11It is necessary to silence them; they overthrow whole households by teaching what they shouldn’t in order to get money dishonestly. 12One of their very own prophets said,
Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons. # This saying is from the Cretan poet Epimenides (6th century b.c.).
13This testimony is true. # Jn 8:14 So, rebuke them sharply, # 2Co 13:10 that they may be sound in the faith 14and may not pay attention to Jewish myths # 1Tm 1:4; 4:7; 2Tm 4:4; 2Pt 1:16 and the commands of men who reject the truth. # 2Tm 4:4
15To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience # Heb 13:18 are defiled. 16They profess to know God, # Jn 7:28 but they deny Him by their works. # Mk 14:6; 2Co 9:8; Gl 3:10; Jms 2:14-26 They are detestable, disobedient, and disqualified for any good work. # 2Co 9:8
