Now in the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” But she was deeply troubled at his words and began to wonder what kind of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Listen: you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.
