Psalms 69
69
To the director: To the tune “The Lilies.” A song of David.
1God, save me from all my troubles!
The rising water has reached my neck.
2I have nothing to stand on.
I am sinking down, down into the mud.
I am in deep water,
and the waves are about to cover me.
3I am getting weak from calling for help.
My throat is sore.
I have waited and looked for your help
until my eyes are hurting.
4I have more enemies than the hairs on my head.
They hate me for no reason.
They try hard to destroy me.
My enemies tell lies about me.
They say I stole from them
and they demand that I pay for things I did not steal.
5God, you know my faults.
I cannot hide my sins from you.
6My Lord GOD All-Powerful, don’t let me embarrass your followers.
God of Israel, don’t let me bring disgrace to those who worship you.
7My face is covered with shame.
I carry this shame for you.
8My own brothers treat me like a stranger.
They act as if I came from a foreign land.
9My strong devotion to your Temple is destroying me.
Those who insult you are also insulting me.
10When I spend time crying and fasting,
they make fun of me.
11When I wear sackcloth to show my sorrow,
they tell jokes about me.
12They talk about me in public places.
The beer drinkers make up songs about me.
13As for me, Lord, this is my prayer to you:
Please accept me!
God, I want you to answer me with love.
I know I can trust you to save me.
14Pull me from the mud,
and don’t let me sink down deeper.
Save me from those who hate me.
Save me from this deep water.
15Don’t let the waves drown me.
Don’t let the deep sea swallow me
or the grave close its mouth on me.
16Answer me, Lord, from the goodness of your faithful love.
Out of your great kindness turn to me and help me!
17Don’t turn away from your servant.
I am in trouble, so hurry and help me!
18Come save my soul.
Rescue me from my enemies.
19You know the shame I have suffered.
You know all my enemies.
You saw how they humiliated me.
20I feel the pain of their insults.
The shame makes me feel like dying!
I wanted some sympathy,
but there was none.
I waited for someone to comfort me,
but no one came.
21They gave me poison, not food.
They gave me vinegar, not wine.
22Their tables are covered with food.
Let their fellowship meals destroy them.
23Let them go blind and their backs become weak.
24Show them how angry you are.
Let them feel what your anger can do.
25Make their homes empty.
Don’t let anyone live there.
26They try to hurt people you have already punished.
They tell everyone about the suffering you gave them.
27Punish them for the bad things they have done.
Don’t show them how good you can be.
28Erase their names from the book of life.
Don’t let their names appear on the list of those who do what is right.
29I am sad and hurting.
God, lift me up and save me!
30I will praise God’s name in song.
I will honor him by giving him thanks.
31The Lord will be happier with this
than with the offering of an ox or a full-grown bull as a sacrifice.
32Poor people, you came to worship God.
You will be happy to know these things.
33The Lord listens to poor, helpless people.
He does not turn away from those who are in prison.
34Praise him, heaven and earth!
Sea and everything in it, praise him!
35God will save Zion.
He will rebuild the cities of Judah.
The people will settle there again and own the land.
36The descendants of his servants will get that land.
Those who love his name will live there.

Psalm 69
69
Save Me, O God
To the choirmaster: according to #Ps. 45, titleLilies. Of David.
1Save me, O God!
For #ver. 14, 15; See Ps. 32:6; 130:1; Job 22:11the waters have come up to my neck.#69:1 Or waters threaten my life
2I sink in deep #ver. 14; Ps. 40:2 mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood #Ps. 124:4sweeps over me.
3 #
Ps. 6:6 I am weary with my crying out;
# [Ps. 22:15] my throat is parched.
#
Ps. 119:82, 123; Deut. 28:32; Isa. 38:14 My eyes grow dim
with #See Ps. 31:24waiting for my God.
4 #
Ps. 40:12 More in number than the hairs of my head
are #Cited John 15:25 those who hate me #[Ps. 35:7; 59:3, 4; 109:3; 119:161] without cause;
mighty are those who would destroy me,
#
Ps. 35:19; 38:19 those who attack me with lies.
What I did not steal
must I now restore?
5O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
6Let not those who hope in you #See Ps. 25:2be put to shame through me,
O Lord God of hosts;
let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,
O God of Israel.
7For it is #Jer. 15:15; [Ps. 44:22]for your sake that I have borne reproach,
that dishonor has covered my face.
8I have become #[Ps. 31:11; 38:11; Job 19:13; John 1:11]a stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my mother’s sons.
9For #Cited John 2:17; [Ps. 119:139]; See Ps. 132:1-5 zeal for your house has consumed me,
and #Cited Rom. 15:3; [Ps. 89:41, 50]the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10When I wept and humbled#69:10 Hebrew lacks and humbled my soul with fasting,
it became my reproach.
11When I made #See Ps. 35:13 sackcloth my clothing,
I became #See Job 17:6a byword to them.
12I am the talk of those who #[Gen. 19:1; Esth. 2:19] sit in the gate,
and the drunkards make #See Job 30:9songs about me.
13But as for me, my #Ps. 109:4 prayer is to you, O Lord.
At #Isa. 49:8; 2 Cor. 6:2; [Ps. 32:6]an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
14Deliver me
from sinking in #ver. 2 the mire;
#
Ps. 144:7 let me be delivered from my enemies
and from #ver. 1, 2the deep waters.
15Let not the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or #Ps. 55:23 the pit close #Num. 16:33its mouth over me.
16Answer me, O Lord, for your #Ps. 63:3; 109:21 steadfast love is good;
according to your abundant #Ps. 106:45 mercy, #See Ps. 25:16turn to me.
17 # See Ps. 27:9 Hide not your face from your servant,
# See Ps. 18:6 for I am in distress; #Ps. 102:2; 143:7make haste to answer me.
18Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
ransom me because of my enemies!
19You know my #ver. 10, 11; [Heb. 12:2]; See Ps. 22:6reproach,
and my shame and my dishonor;
my foes are all known to you.
20 # [See ver. 19 above] Reproaches have broken my heart,
so that I am in #[Matt. 26:37] despair.
I #Ps. 142:4; [Isa. 63:5] looked for #Jer. 15:5 pity, but there was none,
and for #Job 16:2comforters, but I found none.
21They gave me #Deut. 29:18; Matt. 27:34 poison for food,
and for my thirst they gave me #Matt. 27:48; Luke 23:36; John 19:29; [Mark 15:23]sour wine to drink.
22 # Cited Rom. 11:9, 10; See Ps. 35:4-8; 109:6-15 Let their own #Ps. 23:5 table before them become a snare;
# [1 Thess. 5:3] and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.#69:22 Hebrew; a slight revocalization yields (compare Septuagint, Syriac, Jerome) a snare, and retribution and a trap
23 #
Isa. 6:10; [Matt. 13:14] Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,
#
Dan. 5:6; Nah. 2:10 and make their loins tremble continually.
24Pour out your indignation upon them,
and let your burning anger overtake them.
25 # Cited Acts 1:20; [Matt. 23:38; Luke 13:35] May their camp be a desolation;
let no one dwell in their tents.
26For they #[Zech. 1:15] persecute him whom #Isa. 53:4 you have struck down,
and they recount the pain of #[Job 19:21]those you have wounded.
27 #
Neh. 4:5
Add to them punishment upon punishment;
may they have no acquittal from you.#69:27 Hebrew may they not come into your righteousness
28Let them be #Ex. 32:32; Rev. 3:5; [Phil. 4:3] blotted out of the book of the living;
let them not be #[Ezek. 13:9; Luke 10:20; Heb. 12:23]enrolled among the righteous.
29But I am afflicted and in pain;
let your salvation, O God, #Ps. 20:1set me on high!
30I will #Ps. 28:7 praise the name of God with a song;
I will #See Ps. 34:3 magnify him with #See Ps. 50:14, 23thanksgiving.
31This will #Ps. 50:13 please the Lord more than an ox
or a bull #Lev. 11:3with horns and hoofs.
32When #Ps. 22:26; 34:2the humble see it they will be glad;
you who seek God, #Ps. 22:26; 34:2let your hearts revive.
33For the Lord hears the needy
and #[Ps. 68:6]does not despise his own people who are prisoners.
34Let #Ps. 96:11; 98:7; Isa. 44:23; 49:13; See Ps. 148:1-12heaven and earth praise him,
the seas and everything that moves in them.
35For #See Ps. 51:18; [Isa. 44:26]God will save Zion
and build up the cities of Judah,
and people shall dwell there and possess it;
36 #
Ps. 102:28; Isa. 65:9; [Ps. 37:29] the offspring of his servants shall inherit it,
and those who love his name shall dwell in it.
