Psalms 56
56
To the director: To the tune “The Dove in the Distant Oak.” A miktam of David written when the Philistines captured him in Gath.
1God, people have attacked me, so be merciful to me.
They have been chasing me all day, closing in to attack me.
2My enemies come at me constantly.
There are too many fighters to count.#56:2 There are … count Or “There are many attacking me from above.”
3When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
4I trust God, so I am not afraid of what people can do to me!
I praise God for his promise to me.
5My enemies are always twisting my words.
They are always making plans against me.
6They hide together and watch every move I make,
hoping for some way to kill me.
7God, send them away because of the bad things they did.
Show your anger and defeat those people.
8You know I am very upset.
You know how much I have cried.
Surely you have kept an account of all my tears.
9I know that when l call for help, my enemies will turn and run.
I know that because God is with me!
10I praise God for his promise.
I praise the Lord for his promise to me.
11I trust God, so I am not afraid
of what people can do to me!
12God, I will keep the special promises I made to you.
I will give you my thank offering.
13You saved me from death.
You kept me from being defeated.
So I will serve you in the light
that only the living can see.

Psalm 56
56
1 Unto the end. May you not destroy. Of David, with the inscription of a title, when he fled from Saul into a cave.
2 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me. For my soul trusts in you. And I will hope in the shadow of your wings, until iniquity passes away.
3 I will cry out to God Most High, to God who has been kind to me.
4 He sent from heaven and freed me. He has surrendered into disgrace those who trampled me. God has sent his mercy and his truth.
5 And he has rescued my soul from the midst of the young lions. I slept troubled. The sons of men: their teeth are weapons and arrows, and their tongue is a sharp sword.
6 Be exalted above the heavens, O God, and your glory above all the earth.
7 They prepared a snare for my feet, and they bowed down my soul. They dug a pit before my face, yet they have fallen into it.
8 My heart is prepared, O God, my heart is prepared. I will sing, and I will compose a psalm.
9 Rise up, my glory. Rise up, psaltery and harp. I will arise in early morning.
10 I will confess to you, O Lord, among the peoples. I will compose a psalm to you among the nations.
11 For your mercy has been magnified, even to the heavens, and your truth, even to the clouds.
12 Be exalted above the heavens, O God, and your glory above all the earth.
