Psalms 16
16
A miktam of David.
1Protect me, God, because I depend on you.
2Some of you#16:2 Some of you Literally, “you” (singular). Most translations assume it should be “I,” giving a different meaning to verses 2 and 3, which are very difficult in the Hebrew text. have said to the Lord,
“You are my Lord.
Every good thing I have comes from you.”
3But you have also said about the gods#16:3 gods Literally, “holy ones.” of this land,
“They are my powerful gods.
They are the ones who make me happy.”
4But those who worship other gods will have many troubles.
I will not share in the gifts of blood they offer to their idols.
I will not even say their names.
5Lord, you give me all that I need.
You support me.
You give me my share.
6My share#16:6 share Or “section of land.” is wonderful.
My inheritance#16:6 inheritance Here, this probably means the land each Israelite received. is very beautiful.
7I praise the Lord because he taught me well.
Even at night he put his instructions deep inside my mind.#16:7 mind Literally, “my kidneys.”
8I always remember that the Lord is with me.#16:8 Literally, “I set the Lord before me always.”
He is here, close by my side,
so nothing can defeat me.
9So my heart and soul will be very happy.
Even my body will live in safety,
10because you will not leave me in the place of death.
You will not let your faithful one rot in the grave.
11You will teach me the right way to live.
Just being with you will bring complete happiness.
Being at your right side will make me happy forever.

(A special psalm by David.)
The Best Choice
1Protect me, Lord God!
I run to you for safety,
2and I have said,
“Only you are my Lord!
Every good thing I have
is a gift from you.”
3Your people are wonderful,
and they make me happy,#16.3 Your people … happy: Or “I was happy worshiping gods I thought were powerful.”
4but worshipers of other gods
will have much sorrow.#16.4 but … sorrow: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
I refuse to offer sacrifices
of blood to those gods
or worship in their name.
5You, Lord, are all I want!
You are my choice,
and you keep me safe.
6You make my life pleasant,
and my future is bright.
7I praise you, Lord,
for being my guide.
Even in the darkest night,
your teachings fill my mind.
8 #
Ac 2.25-28. I will always look to you,
as you stand beside me
and protect me from fear.
9With all my heart,
I will celebrate,
and I can safely rest.
10 #
Ac 13.35. I am your chosen one.
You won't leave me in the grave
or let my body decay.
11You have shown me
the path to life,
and you make me glad
by being near to me.
Sitting at your right side,#16.11 right side: The place of power and honor.
I will always be joyful.
