Passover
1The Lord spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai. This was during the first month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said to Moses, 2“Tell the Israelites to celebrate Passover at the chosen time. 3They must eat the Passover meal just before dark on the 14th day of this month. They must do this at the chosen time, and they must follow all the rules about Passover.”
4So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate Passover. 5The people did this in the desert of Sinai just before dark on the 14th day of the first month. The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.
6But some of the people could not celebrate Passover that day. They were unclean because they had touched a dead body. So they went to Moses and Aaron that day 7and said to Moses, “We touched a dead body and became unclean. But why must we be kept from offering our gifts to the Lord at the chosen time with the rest of the Israelites?”
8Moses said to them, “I will ask the Lord what he says about this.”
9Then the Lord said to Moses, 10“Tell the Israelites this: It might happen sometimes that you or your descendants cannot celebrate the Lord’s Passover at the right time. Someone might be unclean because they touched a dead body, or they might be away on a trip. They will still be able to celebrate Passover at another time. 11They must celebrate Passover just before dark on the 14th day of the second month. At that time they must eat the lamb, the bread made without yeast, and the bitter herbs. 12They must not leave any of that food until the next morning. And they must not break any of the bones of the lamb. They must follow all the rules about Passover. 13But anyone who is able must celebrate Passover at the right time. If they are clean and they are not away on a trip, there is no excuse for them not to do it. If they don’t celebrate Passover at the right time, they must be separated from their people. They are guilty and must be punished, because they did not give the Lord his gift at the right time.
14“A foreigner living among you might want to share in the Lord’s Passover with you. This is allowed, but that person must follow all the rules about Passover. The same rules are for everyone.”
The Cloud and the Fire
15On the day the Holy Tent, the Tent of the Agreement, was set up, a cloud covered it. At night the cloud over the Holy Tent looked like fire. 16The cloud stayed over the Holy Tent all the time. And at night the cloud looked like fire. 17When the cloud moved from its place over the Holy Tent, the Israelites followed it. When the cloud stopped, that is the place where the Israelites camped. 18This was the way the Lord showed the Israelites when to move and when to stop and set up camp. While the cloud stayed over the Holy Tent, the people continued to camp in that same place. 19Sometimes the cloud would stay over the Holy Tent for a long time. The Israelites obeyed the Lord and did not move. 20Sometimes the cloud was over the Holy Tent for only a few days. So the people obeyed the Lord’s command—they followed the cloud when it moved. 21Sometimes the cloud stayed only during the night—the next morning the cloud moved. So the people gathered their things and followed it. If the cloud moved, during the day or during the night, they followed it. 22If the cloud stayed over the Holy Tent for two days, a month, or a year, the people stayed at that place. They did not leave until the cloud moved. When the cloud rose from its place and moved, they also moved. 23So the people obeyed the Lord’s commands. They camped when the Lord told them to, and they moved when he told them to. They watched carefully and obeyed the Lord’s commands to Moses.

The Second Passover
1In the first month of the second year after their departure from the land of Egypt, the Lord told Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai: # Ex 19:1-2; Nm 1:1; 3:4,14 2“The Israelites are to observe the Passover at its appointed time. # Ex 13:10; 23:15 3You must observe it at its appointed time on the fourteenth day of this month at twilight; you are to observe it according to all its statutes and ordinances.” # Ex 12:2-27; Lv 23:4-8; Nm 28:16-25; Dt 16:1-8 4So Moses told the Israelites to observe the Passover, 5and they observed it in the first month on the fourteenth day at twilight in the Wilderness of Sinai. The Israelites did everything as the Lord had commanded Moses.
6But there were some men who were unclean because of a human corpse, so they could not observe the Passover on that day. # 2Ch 30:3 These men came before Moses and Aaron the same day 7and said to him, “We are unclean because of a human corpse. Why should we be excluded from presenting the Lord’s offering at its appointed time with the other Israelites? ”
8Moses replied to them, “Wait here until I hear what the Lord commands for you.”
9Then the Lord spoke to Moses: 10“Tell the Israelites: When any one of you or your descendants is unclean because of a corpse # Lv 21:1-3; Nm 5:2; 6:6-12 or is on a distant journey, he may still observe the Passover to the Lord. 11Such people are to observe it in the second month, on the fourteenth day at twilight. They are to eat the animal with unleavened bread and bitter herbs; # Ex 12:8,15; Dt 16:3-4,8 12they may not leave any of it until morning or break any of its bones. # Ex 12:10,46; Ps 34:20; Jn 19:36 They must observe the Passover according to all its statutes.
13“But the man who is ceremonially clean, is not on a journey, and yet fails to observe the Passover is to be cut off from his people, because he did not present the Lord’s offering at its appointed time. That man will bear the consequences of his sin.
14“If a foreigner resides with you and wants to observe the Passover to the Lord, # Ex 12:48 he is to do so according to the Passover statute and its ordinances. You are to apply the same statute to both the foreign resident and the native of the land.” # Ex 12:49; Lv 24:22; Nm 15:14-16
Guidance by the Cloud
15On the day the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony, # Ex 40:17,34; Nm 7:1 and it appeared like fire above the tabernacle from evening until morning. 16It remained that way continuously: the cloud would cover it, # LXX, Vg, Syr, Tg read it by day appearing like fire at night. # Ex 13:21-22; 40:38 17Whenever the cloud was lifted up above the tent, the Israelites would set out; at the place where the cloud stopped, there the Israelites camped. # Ex 40:36-38; Nm 10:11,33-34 18At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at the Lord’s command they camped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they camped.
19Even when the cloud stayed over the tabernacle many days, the Israelites carried out the Lord’s requirement and did not set out. 20Sometimes the cloud remained over the tabernacle for only a few days. They would camp at the Lord’s command and set out at the Lord’s command. 21Sometimes the cloud remained only from evening until morning; when the cloud lifted in the morning, they set out. Or if it remained a day and a night, they moved out when the cloud lifted. 22Whether it was two days, a month, or longer, # Or a year the Israelites camped and did not set out as long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle. But when it was lifted, they set out. 23They camped at the Lord’s command, and they set out at the Lord’s command. They carried out the Lord’s requirement according to His command through Moses.
