Nehemiah 7
7
1After we finished building the wall and put the doors in the gates, we chose the men who would guard the gates and the men to sing in the Temple and help the priests. 2Next, I put my brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem. I chose another man named Hananiah to be the commander of the fort. I picked Hanani because he was a very honest man and he feared God more than most people do. 3Then I said to Hanani and Hananiah, “Each day you must wait until the sun has been up for several hours before you open the gates of Jerusalem. You must shut and lock the gates before the sun goes down. Also choose people who live in Jerusalem as guards. Put some of them at special places to guard the city, and put the other people near their own houses.”
The List of Captives Who Returned
4Now the city was large and there was plenty of room. But there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. 5So my God put it in my heart to have all the people meet together. I called together all the important people, the officials, and the common people. I did this so that I could make a list of all the families. I found the family lists#7:5 family lists See Ezra 2. of the people who had been the first to return from captivity. This is what I found written there:
6These are the people of the province who came back from captivity. In the past, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took them as prisoners to Babylon. These people came back to Jerusalem and Judah. They all went to their own towns. 7They returned with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. 61Some people came to Jerusalem from these towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon, and Immer. But these people could not prove that their families really came from the Israelites:
62the descendants of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda: 642
63From the family of priests there were the descendants of
Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai. (If a man married a daughter of Barzillai from Gilead, he was counted as a descendant of Barzillai.)
64These people searched for their family histories, but they could not find them. They could not prove that their ancestors were priests, so they could not serve as priests. Their names were not included in the list of priests. 65The governor ordered them not to eat any of the most holy food until a priest could use the Urim and Thummim to ask God what to do.
66-67All together, there were 42,360 people in the group who came back. This is not counting their 7337 men and women slaves. They also had 245 men and women singers with them. 68-69They had 736 horses, 245 mules, 435 camels, and 6720 donkeys.
70Some of the family leaders gave money to support the work. The governor gave 19 pounds#7:70 19 pounds Literally, “1000 drachmas” (8.63 kg). of gold to the treasury. He also gave 50 bowls and 530 pieces of clothing for the priests. 71The family leaders gave 375 pounds#7:71 375 pounds Literally, “20,000 drachmas” (172.5 kg). of gold to the treasury to support the work. They also gave 2750 pounds#7:71 2750 pounds Literally, “2200 minas” (1265 kg). of silver. 72All together the other people gave 375 pounds of gold, 2500 pounds#7:72 2500 pounds Literally, “2000 minas” (1150 kg). of silver, and 67 pieces of clothing for the priests.
73So the priests, the people from the tribe of Levi, the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Temple servants settled down in their own towns. And all the other Israelites settled down in their own towns. By the seventh month#7:73 seventh month That is, September–October. Also in 8:1, 14-15. of the year, all the Israelites had settled down in their own towns.

Nehemiah 7
1¶ Now it came to pass, when the wall was built and I had set up the doors and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
2that I commanded my brother Hanani, and Hananiah, the prince of the palace in Jerusalem (for he was as a man of truth and feared God above many);
3and I said unto them, Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot and even with the guards present, let them shut the doors and bar them. And appoint guards of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each one in his watch and each one to be in front of his house.
4Now the city was large and great, but there were few people in it, and the houses were not rebuilt.
5¶ And my God put it into my heart to gather together the principals and the rulers and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found the register of the genealogy of those who had come up before and found written therein:
6These are the sons of the province, that came up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had carried away and returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each one unto his city,
7who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

30The men of Ramah and of Geba, six hundred and twenty-one.
31The men of Michmas, one hundred and twenty-two.
32The men of Bethel and Ai, one hundred and twenty-three.
33The men of the other Nebo, fifty-two.
34The sons of the other Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four.
35The sons of Harim, three hundred and twenty.
36The sons of Jericho, three hundred and forty-five.
37The sons of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred and twenty-one.
38The sons of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.
39The priests: the sons of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred and seventy-three.
40The sons of Immer, one thousand fifty-two.
41The sons of Pashur, one thousand two hundred and forty-seven.
42The sons of Harim, one thousand and seventeen.
43The Levites: the sons of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, and of the sons of Hodevah, seventy-four.
44The singers: the sons of Asaph, one hundred and forty-eight.
45The porters: the sons of Shallum, the sons of Ater, the sons of Talmon, the sons of Akkub, the sons of Hatita, the sons of Shobai, one hundred thirty-eight.

56the sons of Neziah, the sons of Hatipha.
57The sons of Solomon’s slaves: the sons of Sotai, the sons of Sophereth, the sons of Perida,
58the sons of Jaala, the sons of Darkon, the sons of Giddel,
59the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth of Zebaim, the sons of Amon.
60All the Nethinims, and the sons of Solomon’s slaves, were three hundred and ninety-two.
61And these were they which came up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer; but they could not show their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.
62The sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two.
63And of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Koz, the sons of Barzillai, who took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name.
64These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore, were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.
65And the Tirshatha said unto them that they should not eat of the most holy things until there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.
66The whole congregation united as one man was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,
67not counting their menslaves and their maidslaves, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five men and women singers.
68Their horses, seven hundred and thirty-six; their mules, two hundred and forty-five:
69 Their camels, four hundred and thirty-five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.
70And some of the princes of the families gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave for the treasure one thousand drams of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priests’ garments.
71And the princes of the families gave for the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand two hundred pounds of silver.
72And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand pounds of silver and sixty-seven priests’ garments.
73So the priests and the Levites and the porters and the singers and those of the people and the Nethinims and all Israel dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the sons of Israel were in their cities.
