Mark 13

Jesus Warns About the Future
(Mt. 24:1–25; Lk. 21:5–24)
1Jesus was leaving the Temple area. One of his followers said to him, “Teacher, look how big those stones are! What beautiful buildings!”
2Jesus said, “Do you see these great buildings? They will all be destroyed. Every stone will be thrown down to the ground. Not one stone will be left on another.”
3Later, Jesus was sitting at a place on the Mount of Olives. He was alone with Peter, James, John, and Andrew. They could all see the Temple, and they said to Jesus, 4“Tell us when these things will happen. And what will show us it is time for them to happen?”
5Jesus said to them, “Be careful! Don’t let anyone fool you. 6Many people will come and use my name. They will say, ‘I am the Messiah,#13:6 the Messiah Literally “the one,” meaning the chosen one sent by God. See “Messiah” in the Word List and Mt. 24:5.’ and they will fool many people. 7You will hear about wars that are being fought. And you will hear stories about other wars beginning. But don’t be afraid. These things must happen before the end comes. 8Nations will fight against other nations. Kingdoms will fight against other kingdoms. There will be times when there is no food for people to eat. And there will be earthquakes in different places. These things are only the beginning of troubles, like the first pains of a woman giving birth.
9“You must be careful! There are people who will arrest you and take you to be judged for being my followers. They will beat you in their synagogues. You will be forced to stand before kings and governors. You will tell them about me. 10Before the end comes, the Good News must be told to all nations. 11Even when you are arrested and put on trial, don’t worry about what you will say. Say whatever God tells you at the time. It will not really be you speaking. It will be the Holy Spirit.
12“Brothers will turn against their own brothers and hand them over to be killed. Fathers will hand over their own children to be killed. Children will fight against their own parents and have them killed. 13All people will hate you because you follow me. But those who remain faithful to the end will be saved.
14“You will see ‘the terrible thing that causes destruction.’#13:14 ‘the terrible thing … destruction’ See Dan. 9:27; 11:31; 12:11. You will see this thing standing in the place where it should not be.” (Reader, I trust you understand what this means.) “Everyone in Judea at that time should run away to the mountains. 15They should run away without wasting time to stop for anything. If someone is on the roof of their house, they must not go down to take things out of the house. 16If someone is in the field, they must not go back to get a coat.
17“During that time it will be hard for women who are pregnant or have small babies. 18Pray that these things will not happen in winter, 19because those days will be full of trouble. There will be more trouble than has ever happened since the beginning, when God made the world. And nothing that bad will ever happen again. 20But the Lord has decided to make that terrible time short. If it were not made short, no one could survive. But the Lord will make that time short to help the special people he has chosen.
21“Someone might say to you at that time, ‘Look, there is the Messiah!’ Or another person might say, ‘There he is!’ But don’t believe them. 22False messiahs and false prophets will come and do miracles and wonders,#13:22 miracles and wonders Here, amazing acts done by Satan’s power. trying to fool the people God has chosen, if that is possible. 23So be careful. Now I have warned you about all this before it happens.
When Jesus, the Son of Man, Comes Again
(Mt. 24:29–51; Lk. 21:25–36)
24“During the days following that time of trouble,
‘The sun will become dark,
and the moon will not give light.
25The stars will fall from the sky,
and everything in the sky will be changed.’#13:24-25 See Isa. 13:10; 34:4.
26“Then people will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27He will send his angels all around the earth. They will gather his chosen people from every part of the earth.
28“The fig tree teaches us a lesson: When its branches become green and soft, and new leaves begin to grow, then you know that summer is very near. 29In the same way, when you see all these things happening, you will know that the time#13:29 time The time Jesus has been talking about when something important will happen. See Lk. 21:31, where Jesus says that this is the time for God’s kingdom to come. is very near, already present. 30I assure you that all these things will happen while some of the people of this time are still living. 31The whole world, earth and sky, will be destroyed, but my words will last forever.
32“No one knows when that day or time will be. The Son and the angels in heaven don’t know when that day or time will be. Only the Father knows. 33Be careful! Always be ready. You don’t know when that time will be.
34“It’s like a man who goes on a trip and leaves his house in the care of his servants. He gives each one a special job to do. He tells the servant guarding the door to always be ready. And this is what I am telling you now. 35You must always be ready. You don’t know when the owner of the house will come back. He might come in the afternoon, or at midnight, or in the early morning, or when the sun rises. 36If you are always ready, he will not find you sleeping, even if he comes back earlier than expected. 37I tell you this, and I say it to everyone: ‘Be ready!’”

Mark 13
13
1 And as he was departing from the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, observe these fine stones and fine structures."
2 And in response, Jesus said to him: "Do you see all these great buildings? There shall not be left stone upon stone, which is not torn down."
3 And as he sat at the Mount of Olives, opposite the temple, Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew questioned him privately.
4 "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things will begin to be fulfilled?"
5 And Jesus, answering, began to say to them: "See to it that no one leads you astray.
6 For many will come in my name, saying, 'For I am he,' and they will lead many astray.
7 But when you will have heard of wars and rumors of wars, you should not be afraid. For these things must be, but the end is not so soon.
8 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom over kingdom, and there shall be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are but the beginning of the sorrows.
9 But see to yourselves. For they will hand you over to councils, and in the synagogues you will be beaten, and you shall stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony for them.
10 And the Gospel must first be preached to all nations.
11 And when they have seized you and handed you over, do not consider in advance what to say. But whatever will be given you in that hour, say that. For you will not be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
12 Then brother will betray brother to death, and the father, a son; and children will rise up against their parents and will bring about their death.
13 And you will be hated by all for the sake of my name. But whoever will have persevered unto the end, the same will be saved.
14 Then, when you have seen the abomination of desolation, standing where it ought not to be, let the reader understand: then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
15 And let whoever is on the rooftop not descend to the house, nor enter so as to take anything from the house.
16 And let whoever may be in the field not return to take his garment.
17 But woe to those who are pregnant or nursing in those days.
18 Truly, pray that these things may not happen in winter.
19 For those days shall have such tribulations as have not been since the beginning of the creation that God founded, even until now, and shall not be.
20 And unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh would be saved. But, for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened the days.
21 And then, if anyone will have said to you: 'Behold, here is the Christ. Behold, in that place.' Do not believe it.
22 For false Christs and false prophets will rise up, and they will present signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if it were possible, even the elect.
23 Therefore, you must take heed. Behold, I have foretold all to you.
24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give her splendor.
25 And the stars of heaven will be falling down, and the powers that are in heaven will be moved.
26 And then they shall see the Son of man arriving on the clouds, with great power and glory.
27 And then he will send his Angels, and gather together his elect, from the four winds, from the limits of the earth, to the limits of heaven.
28 Now from the fig tree discern a parable. When its branch becomes tender and the foliage has been formed, you know that summer is very near.
29 So also, when you will have seen these things happen, know that it is very near, even at the doors.
30 Amen I say to you, that this lineage shall not pass away, until all these things have happened.
31 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away.
32 But concerning that day or hour, no one knows, neither the Angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
33 Take heed, be vigilant, and pray. For you do not know when the time may be.
34 It is like a man who, setting out on a sojourn, left behind his house, and gave his servants authority over every work, and instructed the doorkeeper to stand watch.
35 Therefore, be vigilant, for you do not know when the lord of the house may arrive: in the evening, or in the middle of the night, or at first light, or in the morning.
36 Otherwise, when he will have arrived unexpectedly, he may find you sleeping.
37 But what I say to you, I say to all: Be vigilant."
