Jeremiah 43

1So Jeremiah finished telling the people the message from the Lord their God. He told them everything that the Lord their God had sent him to tell them.
2Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and some other men were proud and stubborn. They became angry with Jeremiah. They said to him, “Jeremiah, you are lying! The Lord our God didn’t send you to say to us, ‘You must not go to Egypt to live there.’ 3Jeremiah, we think that Baruch son of Neriah is encouraging you to be against us. He wants you to give us to the Babylonians. He wants you to do this so they can kill us. Or he wants you to do this so that they can make us captives and take us to Babylon.”
4So Johanan, the army officers, and all the people disobeyed the Lord’s command. The Lord had commanded them to stay in Judah. 5But Johanan, son of Kareah, and the army officers did not obey this command. Instead, they took the survivors from Judah to Egypt. In the past the enemy had taken the survivors to other countries, but they had come back to Judah. 6Now Johanan and all the army officers took all the men, women, and children and led them to Egypt. Among those people were the king’s daughters. (Nebuzaradan had put Gedaliah in charge of those people. Nebuzaradan was the commander of the king of Babylon’s special guards.) Johanan also took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah. 7These people didn’t listen to the Lord. So they all went to Egypt to the town of Tahpanhes.#43:7 Tahpanhes A town in northeastern Egypt.
8In the town of Tahpanhes, Jeremiah received this message from the Lord: 9“Jeremiah, get some large stones. Take them and bury them in the clay and brick sidewalk in front of Pharaoh’s official building in Tahpanhes. Do this while the people of Judah are watching you. 10Then say to those who are watching you: ‘This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: I will send for King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to come here. He is my servant, and I will set his throne over these stones I have buried here. Nebuchadnezzar will spread his canopy#43:10 canopy A temporary covering used for shade. It is like a tent without sides. above these stones. 11He will come here and attack Egypt. He will bring death to those who are to die. He will bring captivity to those who are to be taken captive. And he will bring the sword to those who are to be killed with a sword. 12Nebuchadnezzar will start a fire in the temples of the false gods of Egypt. He will burn the temples and he will take the idols away. Shepherds pick the bugs and thorns off their clothes to make them clean. In the same way Nebuchadnezzar will pick Egypt clean. Then he will safely leave Egypt. 13He will destroy the memorial stones that are in the temple of the Sun God#43:13 Sun God This was the most important god in Egypt. in Egypt, and he will burn down the temples of the false gods of Egypt.’”

Jeremiah 43

1 And then,#Literally “And it was” when Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of Yahweh their God, for which Yahweh their God had sent him to them with all these words, 2Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the insolent men spoke,#The Hebrew verb is singular saying to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie! Yahweh our God did not send you, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘You must not go to Egypt to dwell as aliens there.’ 3But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us in order to give us into the hand of the Chaldeans, to kill us and to deport us to Babylon.”
4So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies, and all the people did not listen#The Hebrew verb is singular to the voice of Yahweh to stay in the land of Judah. 5But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took#The Hebrew verb is singular all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been scattered to dwell as aliens in the land of Judah— 6the men, and the women, and the little children, and the daughters of the king, and everyone#Literally “all of the person” whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard#Hebrew “guards” had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah— 7and they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not listen to the voice of Yahweh. And they came up to Tahpanhes.
The Throne of Nebuchadnezzar Will be Set Up at Tahpanhes
8And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9“Take in your hands#Hebrew “hand” large stones and bury them in the mortar in the clay floor that is at the entrance of the palace#Or “house” of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes before the eyes of the people#Or “men” of the Judeans, 10and say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: “Look, I am going to send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden. And he will spread out his canopy over them. 11And he will come and ravage the land of Egypt, and deliver those who are appointed for the plague, to the plague, and those who are appointed for the captivity, to the captivity, and those who are appointed for the sword, to the sword. 12Then he will kindle a fire in the temples#Literally “houses” of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. And he will wrap up the land of Egypt just as the shepherd wraps up his cloak. And he will go forth from there in peace. 13And he will break the stone pillars of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt. And he will burn the temples#Literally “houses” of the gods of Egypt with fire.” ’ ”
