Promises of Hope
1This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the Lord. 2The Lord, the God of the people of Israel, said, “Jeremiah, write in a book the words I have spoken to you. Write this book for yourself. 3Do this because the days will come”—this message is from the Lord—“when I will bring my people, Israel and Judah, back from exile.” This message is from the Lord. “I will put the people back in the land that I gave to their ancestors. Then my people will own that land again.”
4The Lord spoke this message about the people of Israel and Judah. 5This is what the Lord said:
“We hear people crying from fear.
There is fear, not peace.
6“Ask this question and consider it:
Can a man have a baby? Of course not!
Then why do I see every strong man holding his stomach
like a woman having labor pains?
Why is everyone’s face turning white
like a dead man?
7“This is a very important time for Jacob.
This is a time of great trouble.
There will never be another time like this,
but Jacob will be saved.
8“At that time,” says the Lord All-Powerful, “I will break the yoke from the necks of the people of Israel and Judah, and I will break the ropes holding you. People from foreign countries will never again force my people to be slaves. 9The people of Israel and Judah will not serve foreign countries. No, they will serve the Lord their God. I will send them David their king,#30:9 David their king This means another king of Israel who will be great like King David. and they will serve him.
10“So Jacob, my servant, don’t be afraid!”
This message is from the Lord.
“Israel, don’t be afraid.
I will save you from that faraway place.
You are captives#30:10 captives People taken away as prisoners. Here, it means the Jewish people who were taken to Babylon. in that faraway land,
but I will save your descendants.
I will bring them back from that land.
Jacob will have peace again.
People will not bother Jacob.
There will be no enemy to frighten my people.
11People of Israel and Judah, I am with you.”
This message is from the Lord.
“I will save you.
I sent you to those nations,
but I will completely destroy all of them.
It is true; I will destroy those nations,
but I will not destroy you.
You must be punished for the bad things you did,
but I will discipline you fairly.”
12This is what the Lord says:
“You people of Israel and Judah have a wound that cannot be cured.
You have an injury that will not heal.
13There is no one to care for your sores,
so you will not be healed.
14You became friends with many nations,
but those nations don’t care about you.
Your ‘friends’ have forgotten you.
I hurt you like an enemy.
I punished you very hard.
I did this because of your great guilt.
I did this because of your many sins.
15Israel and Judah, why are you still crying about your wound?
There is no cure for it.
I did this to you because of your great guilt.
I did this because of your many sins.
16Those nations destroyed you,
but now they have been destroyed.
Israel and Judah, your enemies will become captives.
They stole things from you,
but others will steal from them.
They took things from you in war,
but others will take things from them in war.
17And I will bring your health back
and heal your wounds,” says the Lord,
“because other people said you were outcasts.#30:17 outcasts People who are thrown out of a group by others who don’t like or respect them.
They said, ‘No one cares about Zion.’”
18This is what the Lord says:
“Jacob’s people are now in captivity,
but they will come back.
And I will have pity on Jacob’s houses.
The city#30:18 city This probably refers to Jerusalem. But it might also mean all the cities of Israel and Judah. is now only an empty hill covered with ruined buildings,
but the city will be rebuilt on its hill.
And the king’s palace will be rebuilt where it should be.
19People in those places will sing songs of praise,
and there will be the sound of laughter.
I will give them many children.
Israel and Judah will not be small.
I will bring honor to them.
No one will look down on them.
20Jacob’s family will be like the family of Israel long ago.
I will make Israel and Judah strong,
and I will punish those who hurt them.”
21The Lord says,
“One of their own people will lead them.
That ruler will come from my people.
People can come close to me only if I ask them to.
So I will ask that leader to come to me,
and he will be close to me.
22You will be my people,
and I will be your God.”
23The Lord was very angry!
He punished the people.
The punishment came like a storm.
It came like a tornado against those wicked people.
24The Lord will be angry until he is through punishing them.
He will be angry until he finishes the punishment he planned.
When that day comes,
you people of Judah will understand.

Jeremiah 30
30
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
2 "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, saying: You shall write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you.
3 For behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, when I will convert the turning away of my people, Israel and Judah, says the Lord. And I will return them to the land which I gave to their fathers, and they will possess it."
4 And these are the words which the Lord has spoken to Israel and to Judah:
5 For thus says the Lord: 'We have heard a voice of terror. There is dread, and there is no peace.'
6 Inquire and see, does a male give birth? Then why have I seen every man with his hand on his lower back, like a woman bearing a child? And why have all of their faces turned pale?
7 Woe! For that day is great, and there is nothing like it. For it is the time of tribulation for Jacob, but he will be saved from it.
8 And this shall be in that day, says the Lord of hosts: I will crush his yoke from your neck, and I will break open his bands. And strangers will no longer rule over him.
9 Instead, they will serve the Lord their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
10 Therefore, O my servant Jacob, you should not be afraid, says the Lord, and you should not be frightened, O Israel. For behold, I will save you from a far away land, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. And Jacob will return and have rest, and he shall flow with every good thing. And there will be no one for him to dread.
11 For I am with you, says the Lord, so that I may save you. For I will bring about the consummation of all the nations, among which I have scattered you. But I will not bring about your consummation. Instead, I will chastise you in judgment, so that you will not seem innocent to yourself."
12 For thus says the Lord: "Your fracture is incurable; your wound is very serious.
13 There is no one who may judge your judgment, so as to bandage it; there is no useful treatment for you.
14 All your lovers have forgotten you, and they will not seek you. For I have wounded you with the strike of an enemy, with a cruel chastisement. Your sins have become hardened because of the multitude of your iniquities.
15 Why do you cry out over your affliction? Your pain is incurable. I have done these things to you because of the multitude of your iniquity and because of your hardened sins.
16 Because of this, all those who devour you, will be devoured. And all your enemies will be led into captivity. And those who devastate you, will be devastated. And all those who prey upon you, I will offer as a prey.
17 For I will close up your scar, and I will heal you of your wounds, says the Lord. For they have called you an outcast, O Zion: 'This is she who has no one asking for her.' "
18 Thus says the Lord: "Behold, I will turn back the turning away of the tabernacles of Jacob, and I will take pity on his roofs. And the city will be built up in her heights, and the temple will be founded according to its order.
19 And praise will go forth from them, with the voice of those who play. And I will multiply them, and they will not be lessened. And I will glorify them, and they will not be weakened.
20 And their sons will be as in the beginning. And their assembly will remain in my sight. And I will visit against all those who trouble them.
21 And their ruler will one of their own. And their prince will be led forward from their midst. And I will draw him near, and he will cling to me. For who is the one who applies his heart, so that he may draw near to me, says the Lord?
22 And you shall be my people, and I will be your God."
23 Behold the whirlwind of the Lord, his fury going forth, a destroying storm! It will rest upon the head of the impious.
24 The Lord will not turn back the wrath of his indignation, until he has accomplished and completed the plan of his heart. In the last days, you shall understand these things.
