Proverbs 29
29
Use Good Sense
1If you keep being stubborn
after many warnings,
you will suddenly discover
you have gone too far.
2When justice rules a nation,
everyone is glad;
when injustice rules,
everyone groans.
3If you love wisdom
your parents will be glad,
but chasing after bad women
will cost you everything.
4An honest ruler
makes the nation strong;
a ruler who takes bribes
will bring it to ruin.
5Flattery is nothing less
than setting a trap.
6Your sins will catch you,
but everyone who lives right
will sing and celebrate.
7The wicked don't care
about the rights of the poor,
but good people do.
8Sneering at others is a spark
that sets a city on fire;
using good sense can put out
the flames of anger.
9Be wise and don't sue a fool.
You won't get satisfaction,
because all the fool will do
is sneer and shout.
10A murderer hates everyone
who is honest
and lives right.#29.10 and lives right: Or “and those who live right are friends of honest people.”
11Don't be a fool
and quickly lose your temper—
be sensible and patient.
12A ruler who listens to lies
will have corrupt officials.
13The poor and all who abuse them
must each depend on God
for light.
14Kings who are fair to the poor
will rule a long time.
15Correct your children,
and they will be wise;
children out of control
disgrace their mothers.
16Crime increases
when crooks are in power,
but law-abiding citizens
will see them fall.
17If you correct your children,
they will bring you peace
and happiness.
18Without guidance from God
law and order disappear,
but God blesses everyone
who obeys his Law.
19 #
Si 33.25-30. Even when servants are smart,
it takes more than words
to make them obey.
20There is more hope for a fool
than for someone who speaks
without thinking.
21Slaves that you treat kindly
from their childhood
will cause you sorrow.#29.21 will … sorrow: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
22A person with a quick temper
stirs up arguments
and commits a lot of sins.
23Too much pride brings disgrace;
humility leads to honor.
24If you take part in a crime
you are your worst enemy,
because even under oath
you can't tell the truth.
25Don't fall into the trap
of being a coward—
trust the Lord,
and you will be safe.
26Many try to make friends
with a ruler,
but justice comes
from the Lord.
27Good people and criminals
can't stand each other.

Mishle 29
29
1He, that being often reproved, stiffeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without marpeh (remedy).
2When the tzaddikim are increased, the people rejoice, but when the rasha beareth rule, the people groan.
3He who loveth chochmah rejoiceth aviv, but he that keepeth company with zonot squanders his hon (substance, wealth).
4Melech by mishpat establisheth eretz, but an ish terumot (a man of bribes) bringeth it down.
5A gever that flattereth his neighbor spreadeth a reshet (net) for his feet.
6By peysha (transgression) an ish rah is snared, but the tzaddik doth sing and have simchah.
7The tzaddik considereth the cause of the dalim, but the rasha (wicked) doeth not understand such da'as (knowledge).
8Scornful men enflame a city, but chachamim turn away af (wrath).
9If an ish chacham has to contend with a fool, he#29:9 the fool rageth or laugheth, and hath no rest.
10The anshei damim hate integrity, but the yesharim seek his nefesh (soul).#29:10 i.e., his soulʼs well-being
11A kesil (fool) uttereth all his wrath, but a chacham keepeth it back quietly.
12If a moshel pays heed to davar sheker, all his mesharetim (officials, ministers) are resha'im.
13The rahsh (pauper) and the oppressor have this in common: Hashem enlighteneth both their eynayim.
14If Melech shofet be'emes (judges in truth) the dalim, his kisse shall be established forever.
15The shevet (rod) and tokhakhat (reproof) give chochmah, but a na'ar (child) left to himself bringeth immo to shame.
16When the resha'im are multiplied, peysha (transgression) increaseth, but the tzaddikim shall see their downfall.
17Correct binecha, and he shall give thee rest; indeed, he shall give delight unto thy nefesh.
18Where there is no chazon (prophetic vision), the people cast off restaint,#29:18 i.e., perish ungovernable but he that is shomer over the torah, happy is he.
19An eved will not be corrected by devarim, for though he understand he will not answer.
20Seest thou an ish that is hasty in his devarim? There is more tikvah for a kesil (fool) than for him.
21He that pampers his eved from youth up shall have him as his ben at the acharit (end).
22An ish af (angry man) stirreth up strife, and a ba'al chemah (ill-tempered man) aboundeth in peysha (transgression).
23Ga'avat adam (pride of man) shall bring him low, but the humble in ruach shall attain kavod.
24He who is partner with a ganav hateth his own nefesh; he heareth the curse of the victim but discloses nothing.
25The fear of adam bringeth a mokesh (snare), but he who putteth his trust in Hashem shall be secure.
26Many seek the moshelʼs favor, but mishpat ish cometh from Hashem.
27An unjust man is a to'evah to the tzaddikim, and he that is yeshar derech (upright in the way) is to'evah to the rasha.
