Zacchaeus

1Jesus was going through Jericho, 2where a man named Zacchaeus lived. He was in charge of collecting taxes#19.2 in charge of collecting taxes: See the note at 3.12. and was very rich. 3-4Jesus was heading his way, and Zacchaeus wanted to see what he was like. But Zacchaeus was a short man and could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree.

5When Jesus got there, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down! I want to stay with you today.” 6Zacchaeus hurried down and gladly welcomed Jesus.

7Everyone who saw this started grumbling, “This man Zacchaeus is a sinner! And Jesus is going home to eat with him.”

8Later that day Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “I will give half of my property to the poor. And I will now pay back four times as much#19.8 pay back four times as much: Both Jewish and Roman law said that a person must pay back four times the amount that was taken. to everyone I have ever cheated.”

9Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “Today you and your family have been saved,#19.9 saved: Zacchaeus was Jewish, but it is only now that he is rescued from sin and placed under God's care. because you are a true son of Abraham.#19.9 son of Abraham: As used in this verse, the words mean that Zacchaeus is truly one of God's special people. 10#Mt 18.10,11. The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost.”

A Story about Ten Servants

(Matthew 25.14-30)

11 # Mt 25.14-30. The crowd was still listening to Jesus as he was getting close to Jerusalem. Many of them thought that God's kingdom would soon appear, 12and Jesus told them this story:

A prince once went to a foreign country to be crowned king and then to return. 13But before leaving, he called in ten servants and gave each of them some money. He told them, “Use this to earn more money until I get back.”

14But the people of his country hated him, and they sent messengers to the foreign country to say, “We don't want this man to be our king.”

15After the prince had been made king, he returned and called in his servants. He asked them how much they had earned with the money they had been given.

16The first servant came and said, “Sir, with the money you gave me I have earned ten times as much.”

17“That's fine, my good servant!” the king said. “Since you have shown that you can be trusted with a small amount, you will be given ten cities to rule.”

18The second one came and said, “Sir, with the money you gave me, I have earned five times as much.”

19The king said, “You will be given five cities.”

20Another servant came and said, “Sir, here is your money. I kept it safe in a handkerchief. 21You are a hard man, and I was afraid of you. You take what isn't yours, and you harvest crops you didn't plant.”

22“You worthless servant!” the king told him. “You have condemned yourself by what you have just said. You knew I am a hard man, taking what isn't mine and harvesting what I've not planted. 23Why didn't you put my money in the bank? On my return, I could have had the money together with interest.”

24Then he said to some other servants standing there, “Take the money away from him and give it to the servant who earned ten times as much.”

25But they said, “Sir, he already has ten times as much!”

26 # Mt 13.12; Mk 4.25; Lk 8.18. The king replied, “Those who have something will be given more. But everything will be taken away from those who don't have anything. 27Now bring me the enemies who didn't want me to be their king. Kill them while I watch!”

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

(Matthew 21.1-11; Mark 11.1-11; John 12.12-19)

28When Jesus had finished saying all this, he went on toward Jerusalem. 29As he was getting near Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples on ahead. 30He told them, “Go into the next village, where you will find a young donkey that has never been ridden. Untie the donkey and bring it here. 31If anyone asks why you are doing this, just say, ‘The Lord#19.31 The Lord: Or “The master of the donkey.” needs it.’ ”

32They went off and found everything just as Jesus had said. 33While they were untying the donkey, its owners asked, “Why are you doing that?”

34They answered, “The Lord#19.34 The Lord: Or “The master of the donkey.” needs it.”

35Then they led the donkey to Jesus. They put some of their clothes on its back and helped Jesus get on. 36And as he rode along, the people spread clothes on the road#19.36 spread clothes on the road: This was one way that the Jewish people welcomed a famous person. in front of him. 37When Jesus started down the Mount of Olives, his large crowd of disciples were happy and praised God because of all the miracles they had seen. 38#Ps 118.26. They shouted,

“Blessed is the king who comes

in the name of the Lord!

Peace in heaven

and glory to God.”

39Some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, make your disciples stop shouting!”

40But Jesus answered, “If they keep quiet, these stones will start shouting.”

41When Jesus came closer and could see Jerusalem, he cried 42and said:

It is too bad that today your people don't know what will bring them peace! Now it is hidden from them. 43Jerusalem, the time will come when your enemies will build walls around you to attack you. Armies will surround you and close in on you from every side. 44They will level you to the ground and kill your people. Not one stone in your buildings will be left on top of another. This will happen because you did not see that God had come to save you.#19.44 that God had come to save you: The Jewish people looked for the time when God would come and rescue them from their enemies. But when Jesus came, many of them refused to obey him.

Jesus in the Temple

(Matthew 21.12-17; Mark 11.15-19; John 2.13-22)

45When Jesus entered the temple, he started chasing out the people who were selling things. 46#Is 56.7; Jr 7.11. He told them, “The Scriptures say, ‘My house should be a place of worship.’ But you have made it a place where robbers hide!”

47 # Lk 21.37. Each day, Jesus kept on teaching in the temple. So the chief priests, the teachers of the Law of Moses, and some other important people tried to have him killed. 48But they could not find a way to do it, because everyone else was eager to listen to him.

Nakilala ni Zaqueo si Jesus

1Pumasok si Jesus sa Jerico at naglakad sa kabayanan. 2May isang tao roong ang pangalan ay Zaqueo, isang pinuno ng mga maniningil ng buwis at siya'y mayaman. 3Sinikap niyang makita si Jesus upang makilala kung sino ito, ngunit sa dami ng tao, hindi niya ito makita dahil siya'y pandak. 4Kaya't patakbo siyang nauna sa dadaanan ni Jesus at umakyat sa isang puno ng sikamoro. 5Pagtapat ni Jesus sa lugar na iyon, tumingala siya kay Zaqueo at sinabi, “Zaqueo, bumabâ ka agad sapagkat kailangan kong tumuloy ngayon sa iyong bahay.”

6Nagmamadaling bumabâ si Zaqueo, at tuwang-tuwang tinanggap si Jesus sa kanyang bahay. 7Lahat ng nakakita nito ay nagbulung-bulungan. “Nakikituloy siya sa isang makasalanan,” sabi nila.

8Tumayo si Zaqueo at sinabi niya kay Jesus, “Panginoon, ipamimigay ko po sa mga mahihirap ang kalahati ng aking mga kayamanan. At kung ako'y may nadayang sinuman, isasauli ko ito sa kanya ng maka-apat na beses.”

9At sinabi sa kanya ni Jesus, “Ang kaligtasan ay dumating ngayon sa sambahayang ito sapagkat anak din ni Abraham ang taong ito. 10Ang#Mt. 18:11. Anak ng Tao ay naparito upang hanapin at iligtas ang naligaw.”

Ang Talinghaga ng Salaping Ginto

(Mt. 25:14-30)

11Habang#Mt. 25:14-30. ang mga tao ay nakikinig, nagpatuloy si Jesus sa pagsasalita at isinalaysay niya sa kanila ang isang talinghaga. Si Jesus ay malapit na noon sa Jerusalem at inakala ng mga tao na darating na agad ang kaharian ng Diyos. 12Kaya't sinabi niya, “May isang maharlikang pumunta sa malayong lupain upang siya'y gawing hari, at pagkatapos nito, siya ay babalik. 13Subalit bago siya umalis, tinawag niya ang sampu sa kanyang mga alipin at binigyan ang mga ito ng tig-iisang gintong salapi.#19:13 GINTONG SALAPI: Ang katumbas na halaga ng salaping ito ay humigit-kumulang sa tatlong buwang sahod ng isang karaniwang manggagawa. Sinabi niya sa kanila, ‘Ipangalakal ninyo iyan hanggang sa aking pagbabalik.’ 14Ngunit galit sa kanya ang kanyang mga nasasakupan, kaya't nagsugo sila ng kinatawan upang sabihin sa kinauukulan, ‘Ayaw naming maghari sa amin ang taong iyon.’ 15Gayunpaman ay ginawa rin siyang hari.

“Nang makabalik na siya at nagsimulang maghari, ipinatawag niya ang mga aliping binigyan ng gintong salapi, upang malaman kung magkano ang tinubo ng bawat isa. 16Lumapit sa kanya ang una at ganito ang sinabi, ‘Panginoon, ang isang gintong salaping ibinigay ninyo ay tumubo ng sampu.’ 17‘Magaling,’ sagot niya. ‘Mabuting alipin! Dahil naging tapat ka sa kakaunting ipinagkatiwala sa iyo, pamamahalain kita sa sampung lungsod.’ 18Lumapit naman ang ikalawa at ang sabi, ‘Panginoon, ang gintong salaping iniwan ninyo sa akin ay tumubo ng lima.’ 19At sinabi niya sa alipin, ‘Mamamahala ka sa limang lungsod.’ 20Lumapit ang isa pang alipin at ganito naman ang sinabi, ‘Panginoon, narito po ang inyong gintong salapi. Binalot ko po ito sa panyo at itinago. 21Natatakot po ako sa inyo dahil kayo'y napakahigpit; kinukuha ninyo ang hindi sa inyo at inaani ang hindi ninyo itinanim.’ 22Sinagot siya ng hari, ‘Masamang alipin! Sa salita mong iyan ay hahatulan kita. Alam mo palang ako'y mahigpit at sinasabi mo pang kinukuha ko ang hindi sa akin at inaani ko ang hindi ko itinanim. 23Bakit hindi mo na lamang idineposito sa bangko ang aking salapi? May tinubo sana iyan bago ako dumating.’ 24At sinabi niya sa mga naroon, ‘Kunin ninyo sa kanya ang gintong salapi at ibigay sa may sampu.’ 25‘Panginoon, siya po'y mayroon nang sampung gintong salapi,’ sabi nila. 26‘Sinasabi#Mt. 13:12; Mc. 4:25; Lu. 8:18. ko sa inyo, ang mayroon ay bibigyan pa, ngunit ang wala, kahit ang kaunting nasa kanya ay kukunin pa. 27Tungkol naman sa mga kaaway kong ayaw na ako'y maghari sa kanila, dalhin ninyo sila rito at patayin sa harap ko!’”

Ang Matagumpay na Pagpasok sa Jerusalem

(Mt. 21:1-11; Mc. 11:1-11; Jn. 12:12-19)

28Pagkasabi nito, nauna si Jesus papuntang Jerusalem. 29Nang malapit na siya sa Bethfage at Bethania, sa Bundok ng mga Olibo, isinugo niya ang dalawa sa kanyang mga alagad. 30Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Pumunta kayo sa susunod na nayon. Sa pagpasok doo'y matatagpuan ninyo ang isang batang asno na nakatali; hindi pa iyon nasasakyan ninuman. Kalagan ninyo at dalhin dito. 31Kapag may nagtanong kung bakit ninyo iyon kinakalagan, sabihin ninyong kailangan iyon ng Panginoon.”

32Lumakad nga ang mga inutusan at natagpuan nila ang asno, ayon sa sinabi ni Jesus. 33Habang kinakalagan nila ang batang asno, tinanong sila ng mga may-ari, “Bakit ninyo kinakalagan iyan?”

34“Kailangan po ito ng Panginoon,” tugon nila.

35Dinala nila kay Jesus ang asno, at matapos isapin sa likod nito ang kanilang mga balabal, siya'y pinasakay nila. 36Habang siya'y nakasakay sa asno, inilalatag naman ng mga tao ang kanilang mga balabal sa kanyang dinaraanan. 37Nang siya'y malapit na sa lungsod, palusong na sa libis ng Bundok ng mga Olibo, nagsigawan sa tuwa ang lahat ng alagad niya at malakas na nagpuri sa Diyos dahil sa mga kahanga-hangang pangyayaring kanilang nasaksihan. 38Sinabi#Awit 118:26. nila, “Pinagpala ang haring dumarating sa pangalan ng Panginoon! Kapayapaan sa langit! Papuri sa Kataas-taasan!”

39Sinabi naman sa kanya ng ilang Pariseong kasama ng karamihan, “Guro, patigilin ninyo ang inyong mga alagad.”

40Sumagot siya, “Sinasabi ko sa inyo, kapag tumahimik sila, ang mga bato na ang sisigaw.”

Tinangisan ni Jesus ang Jerusalem

41Nang malapit na siya sa Jerusalem at natatanaw na niya ang lungsod, ito'y kanyang tinangisan. 42Sinabi niya, “Kung nalalaman mo lamang sa araw na ito kung ano ang makakapagdulot sa iyo ng kapayapaan! Ngunit ito'y lingid ngayon sa iyong paningin. 43Darating ang mga araw na magkakampo sa paligid mo ang iyong mga kaaway, palilibutan ka nila at gigipitin sa kabi-kabila. 44Wawasakin ka nila at lilipulin ang lahat ng iyong mamamayan. Wala silang iiwanang magkapatong na bato sapagkat hindi mo pinansin ang pagdalaw sa iyo ng Diyos.”

Si Jesus sa Templo

(Mt. 21:12-17; Mc. 11:15-19; Jn. 2:13-22)

45Pumasok si Jesus sa Templo at sinimulang ipagtabuyan ang mga nagtitinda roon. 46Sinabi#Isa. 56:7; Jer. 7:11. niya sa kanila, “Nasusulat, ‘Ang aking bahay ay tatawaging bahay-dalanginan.’ Ngunit ginawa ninyo itong lungga ng mga magnanakaw.”

47Araw-araw,#Lu. 21:37. si Jesus ay nagtuturo sa loob ng Templo. Pinagsikapan siyang ipapatay ng mga punong pari, mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan at mga pinuno ng bayan. 48Subalit wala silang makitang paraan upang maisagawa ito dahil taimtim na nakikinig sa kanya ang buong bayan.
