Joshua 1

Joshua Becomes the Leader of Israel
1Moses, the Lord's servant, was dead. So the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had been the assistant of Moses. The Lord said:
2My servant Moses is dead. Now you must lead Israel across the Jordan River into the land I'm giving to all of you. 3#Dt 11.24,25. Wherever you go, I'll give you that land, as I promised Moses. 4It will reach from the Southern Desert to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, and to the northeast as far as the great Euphrates River. It will include the land of the Hittites,#1.4 the land … Hittites: This refers to the northern part of Syria, which had been the southernmost part of the Hittite Empire. and the land from here at the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. 5#Dt 31.6,8; He 13.5. Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.

Dt 31.6,7,23. Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law#1.6-8 the Law: Or “Teachings.” he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.
9I've commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.
The Eastern Tribes Promise To Help
10Joshua ordered the tribal leaders 11to go through the camp and tell everyone:
In a few days we will cross the Jordan River to take the land that the Lord our God is giving us. So prepare as much food as you'll need for the march into the land.

Nu 32.28-32; Dt 3.18-20; Js 22.1-9. Joshua told the men of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh:#1.12 East Manasseh: The half of Manasseh that settled east of the Jordan River.
13-14The Lord's servant Moses said that the Lord our God has given you land here on the east side of the Jordan River, where you could live in peace. Your wives and children and your animals can stay here in the land Moses gave you. But all of you that can serve in our army must pick up your weapons and lead the men of the other tribes across the Jordan River. They are your relatives, so you must help them 15conquer the land that the Lord is giving them. The Lord will give peace to them as he has given peace to you, and then you can come back and settle here in the land that Moses promised you.
16The men answered:
We'll cross the Jordan River and help our relatives. We'll fight anywhere you send us. 17-18If the Lord our God will help you as he helped Moses, and if you are strong and brave, we will obey you as we obeyed Moses. We'll even put to death anyone who rebels against you or refuses to obey you.

Joshua 1
1
1And it came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of Jehovah, that Jehovah spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' attendant, saying, 2Moses my servant is dead; and now, rise up, go over this Jordan, thou and all this people, into the land which I give unto them, to the children of Israel. 3Every place whereon the sole of your foot shall tread have I given to you, as I said unto Moses. 4From the wilderness and this Lebanon to the great river, the river Euphrates, the whole land of the Hittites, to the great sea, toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border. 5None shall be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so will I be with thee; I will not leave thee, neither will I forsake thee. 6Be strong and courageous, for thou shalt cause this people to inherit the land which I have sworn unto their fathers to give them. 7Only be strong and very courageous, that thou mayest take heed to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded thee. Turn not from it to the right or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. 8This book of the law shall not depart from thy mouth; and thou shalt meditate upon it day and night, that thou mayest take heed to do according to all that is written therein; for then shalt thou have good success in thy ways, and then shalt thou prosper. 9Have I not commanded thee: Be strong and courageous? Be not afraid, neither be dismayed; for Jehovah thy God#GodHebrew: Elohim is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
10And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, 11Go through the midst of the camp, and command the people, saying, Prepare yourselves victuals, for in three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, that ye may enter in to take possession of the land which Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim giveth you to possess it. 12And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to half the tribe of Manasseh spoke Joshua, saying, 13Remember the word that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, saying, Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim has given you rest and has given you this land. 14Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall abide in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan, but ye, all the valiant men, shall go over in array before your brethren and help them, 15until Jehovah give your brethren rest as to you, and they also take possession of the land which Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim giveth them; then shall ye return into the land of your possession and possess it, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you on this side of the Jordan toward the sun-rising.
16And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou hast commanded us will we do, and whither thou shalt send us will we go. 17According as we hearkened to Moses in all things, so will we hearken to thee; only may Jehovah thy God#GodHebrew: Elohim be with thee as he was with Moses. 18Every one that is rebellious against thy commandment and hearkeneth not to thy words in everything that thou commandest us, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.
