The Coming of the Holy Spirit
1 #
Lv 23.15-21; Dt 16.9-11. On the day of Pentecost#2.1 Pentecost: A Jewish festival that came fifty days after Passover and celebrated the wheat harvest. Jews later celebrated Pentecost as the time when they were given the Law of Moses. all the Lord's followers were together in one place. 2Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind! It filled the house where they were meeting. 3Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there. 4The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak.
5Many religious Jews from every country in the world were living in Jerusalem. 6And when they heard this noise, a crowd gathered. But they were surprised, because they were hearing everything in their own languages. 7They were excited and amazed, and said:
Don't all these who are speaking come from Galilee? 8Then why do we hear them speaking our very own languages? 9Some of us are from Parthia, Media, and Elam. Others are from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, parts of Libya near Cyrene, Rome, 11Crete, and Arabia. Some of us were born Jews, and others of us have chosen to be Jews. Yet we all hear them using our own languages to tell the wonderful things God has done.
12Everyone was excited and confused. Some of them even kept asking each other, “What does all this mean?”
13Others made fun of the Lord's followers and said, “They are drunk.”
Peter Speaks to the Crowd
14Peter stood with the eleven apostles and spoke in a loud and clear voice to the crowd:
Friends and everyone else living in Jerusalem, listen carefully to what I have to say! 15You are wrong to think that these people are drunk. After all, it is only nine o'clock in the morning. 16But this is what God told the prophet Joel to say,
17 # Jl 2.28-32 (LXX). “When the last days come,
I will give my Spirit
to everyone.
Your sons and daughters
will prophesy.
Your young men
will see visions,
and your old men
will have dreams.
18In those days I will give
my Spirit to my servants,
both men and women,
and they will prophesy.
19“I will work miracles
in the sky above
and wonders
on the earth below.
There will be blood and fire
and clouds of smoke.
20The sun will turn dark,
and the moon
will be as red as blood
before the great
and wonderful day
of the Lord appears.
21Then the Lord
will save everyone
who asks for his help.”
22Now, listen to what I have to say about Jesus from Nazareth. God proved he sent Jesus to you by having him work miracles, wonders, and signs. All of you know this. 23#Mt 27.35; Mk 15.24; Lk 23.33; Jn 19.18. God had already planned and decided that Jesus would be handed over to you. So you took him and had evil men put him to death on a cross. 24#Mt 28.5,6; Mk 16.6; Lk 24.5. But God set him free from death and raised him to life. Death could not hold him in its power. 25#Ps 16.8-11 (LXX). What David said are really the words of Jesus,
“I always see the Lord
near me,
and I will not be afraid
with him at my right side.
26Because of this,
my heart will be glad,
my words will be joyful,
and I will live in hope.
27The Lord won't leave me
in the grave.
I am his holy one,
and he won't let
my body decay.
28He has shown me
the path to life,
and he makes me glad
by being near me.”
29My friends, it is right for me to speak to you about our ancestor David. He died and was buried, and his tomb is still here. 30#2 S 7.12,13; Ps 132.11. But David was a prophet, and he knew that God had made a promise he would not break. He had told David someone from his own family would someday be king.
31David knew this would happen, and so he told us Christ would be raised to life. He said God would not leave him in the grave or let his body decay. 32All of us can tell you that God has raised Jesus to life!
33Jesus was taken up to sit at the right side#2.33 right side: The place of honor and power. of God, and he was given the Holy Spirit, just as the Father had promised. Jesus is also the one who has given the Spirit to us, and this is what you are now seeing and hearing.

Ps 110.1. David didn't go up to heaven. So he wasn't talking about himself when he said, “The Lord told my Lord to sit at his right side, 35until he made my Lord's enemies into a footstool for him.” 36Everyone in Israel should then know for certain that God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ, even though you put him to death on a cross.
37When the people heard this, they were very upset. They asked Peter and the other apostles, “Friends, what should we do?”
38Peter said to them, “Turn to God and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39This promise is for you and your children. It is for everyone our Lord God will choose, no matter where they live.”
40Peter told them many other things as well. Then he said, “I beg you to save yourselves from what will happen to all these evil people.” 41On that day about 3,000 believed his message and were baptized. 42They spent their time learning from the apostles, and they were like family to each other. They also broke bread#2.42 broke bread: They ate together and celebrated the Lord's Supper. and prayed together.
Life among the Lord's Followers
43Everyone was amazed by the many miracles and wonders that the apostles worked. 44#Ac 4.32-35. All the Lord's followers often met together, and they shared everything they had. 45They would sell their property and possessions and give the money to whoever was in need. 46Day after day they met together in the temple. They broke bread#2.46 broke bread: See the note at 2.42. together in different homes and shared their food happily and freely, 47while praising God. Everyone liked them, and each day the Lord added to their group others who were being saved.

Acts 2
2
The Ruach Fills the Disciples
1When the day of Shavuot had come, they were all together in one place.
2Suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3And tongues like fire spreading out appeared to them and settled on each one of them.
4They were all filled with the Ruach ha-Kodesh and began to speak in other tongues as the Ruach enabled them to speak out.
5Now Jewish people were staying in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
6And when this sound came, the crowd gathered. They were bewildered, because each was hearing them speaking in his own language.
7And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “All these who are speaking—aren’t they Galileans?
8How is it that we each hear our own birth language?
9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and those living in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya toward Cyrene, and visitors from Rome
11(both Jewish people and proselytes), Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring in our own tongues the mighty deeds of God!”
12And they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other, “What does this mean?”
13Others, poking fun, were saying, “They are full of sweet new wine!”
Peter Speaks to the Shavuot Crowd
14But Peter, standing with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: “Fellow Judeans and all who are staying in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and pay attention to my words.
15These men are not drunk, as you suppose—for it’s only the third hour of the day!
16But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:
17‘And it shall be in the last days,’ says God, ‘that I will pour out My Ruach on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18Even on My slaves, male and female, I will pour out My Ruach in those days, and they shall prophesy.
19And I will give wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth beneath— blood, and fire, and smoky vapor.
20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious Day of Adonai comes.
21And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of Adonai shall be saved.’
22“Men of Israel, hear these words! Yeshua ha-Natzrati—a Man authenticated to you by God with mighty deeds and wonders and signs God performed through Him in your midst, as you yourselves know—
23this Yeshua, given over by God’s predetermined plan and foreknowledge, nailed to the cross by the hand of lawless men, you killed.
24But God raised Him up, releasing Him from the pains of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held by it.
25For David says about Him, ‘I saw Adonai always before me, for He is at my right hand so that I might not be shaken.
26Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; moreover, my body also will live in hope,
27because You will not abandon my soul to Sheol or let Your Holy One see decay.
28You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’
29“Brothers, I can confidently tell you that the patriarch David died and was buried—his tomb is with us to this day.
30So because he was a prophet and knew God had sworn with an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne,
31David saw beforehand and spoke of Messiah’s resurrection—that He was not abandoned to Sheol, and His body did not see decay.
32“This Yeshua God raised up—we all are witnesses!
33Therefore, being exalted to the right hand of God and receiving from the Father the promise of the Ruach ha-Kodesh, He poured out this—what you now see and hear.
34For David did not ascend into the heavens; yet he himself says, ‘Adonai said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
35until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’
36“Therefore let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him—this Yeshua whom you had crucified—both Lord and Messiah!”
Teshuvah—Thousands Immersed
37Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the emissaries, “Fellow brethren, what shall we do?”
38Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be immersed in the name of Messiah Yeshua for the removal of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Ruach ha-Kodesh.
39For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away—as many as Adonai our God calls to Himself.”
40With many other words he warned them and kept urging them, saying, “Save yourselves from this twisted generation!”
41So those who received his message were immersed, and that day about three thousand souls were added.
New Covenant Community Begins
42They were devoting themselves to the teaching of the emissaries and to fellowship, to breaking bread and to prayers.
43Fear lay upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were happening through the emissaries.
44And all who believed were together, having everything in common.
45They began selling their property and possessions and sharing them with all, as any had need.
46Day by day they continued with one mind, spending time at the Temple and breaking bread from house to house. They were sharing meals with gladness and sincerity of heart,
47praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord was adding to their number those being saved.
