Mutual admiration
[Woman]#1.2 Identification of speakers here and throughout the Song is hypothetical and in several cases uncertain.
2If only he would give me some of his kisses …
Oh, your loving is sweeter than wine!
3Your fragrance is sweet;
your very name is perfume.
That’s why the young women love you.
4Take me along with you; let’s run!
My king has brought me into his chambers, saying,
“Let’s exult and rejoice in you.
Let’s savor your loving more than wine.
No wonder they all love you!”
5Dark am I, and lovely, daughters of Jerusalem—
like the black tents of the Kedar nomads,
like the curtains of Solomon’s palace.
6Don’t stare at me because I’m darkened
by the sun’s gaze.
My own brothers were angry with me.
They made me a caretaker of the vineyards—
but I couldn’t care for my own vineyard.
7Tell me, you whom I love with all my heart—
where do you pasture your flock,
where do you rest them at noon?—
so I don’t wander around with the flocks of your companions.
[Man]
8If you don’t know your way,
most beautiful of women,
then follow the tracks of the herds
and graze your little goats
by the tents of the shepherds.
9I picture you, my dearest,
as a mare among Pharaoh’s chariots!
10Lovely are your cheeks, adorned with ear hoops;
your neck, with beads.
11Let’s make hoops of gold beaded with silver for you!
[Woman]
12With my king close by,
my perfume filled the air.
13A sachet of myrrh is my love to me,
lying all night between my breasts.
14A cluster of henna flowers is my love to me
in the desert gardens of En-gedi.
[Man]
15Look at you—so beautiful, my dearest!
Look at you—so beautiful! Your eyes are doves!
[Woman]
16Look at you—so beautiful, my love!
Yes, delightful! Yes, our bed is lush and green!
17The ceilings of our chambers are cedars;
our rafters, cypresses.

Shir haShirim (Song of Songs) 1
1
1The song of songs, which is Shelomoh’s.
2Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, For your carnal-love are better than wine.
3For fragrance your oils are good. Your name is oil poured forth,#See Eccl. 7:1 Therefore the young women#See Explanatory Notes "Maiden" love you.
4Draw me! We run after you. The sovereign has brought me into his inner rooms. We exult and rejoice in you. We praise your carnal-love more than wine. Rightly do they love you.
5I am dark, but lovely, O daughters of Yerushalayim, Like the tents of Qĕḏar, Like the curtains of Shelomoh.
6Do not look upon me, because I am dark, Because the sun has tanned me. My mother’s sons were displeased with me. They made me the keeper of the vineyards, My own vineyard I have not kept.
7Make known to me, O you whom my being loves, Where you feed your flock, Where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one who is veiled Beside the flocks of your companions?
8If you do not know, O beautiful among women, Go in the footsteps of the flock, And feed your little goats beside the shepherds’ dwellings.
9I have compared you, my love, To my filly among Pharaoh’s chariots.
10Your cheeks are pretty with ornaments, Your neck with strings of beads.
11Let us make you ornaments of gold with studs of silver.
12While the sovereign is at his table, My nard shall give its fragrance.
13My beloved is a bundle of myrrh to me, Lying between my breasts.
14My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blooms In the vineyards of Ěn Geḏi.
15See, you are beautiful, my love! See, you are beautiful! Your eyes are as doves.
16See, you are handsome, my beloved! Yes, pleasant! Also our bed is green.
17The beams of our houses are cedar, our rafters are of fir.
