Psalms 44

Psalm 44
For the music leader. A maskil#44.0 Perhaps instruction of the Korahites.
1We have heard it, God, with our own ears;
our ancestors told us about it:
about the deeds you did in their days,
in days long past.
2You, by your own hand, removed all the nations,
but you planted our ancestors.
You crushed all the peoples,
but you set our ancestors free.
3No, not by their own swords
did they take possession of the land—
their own arms didn’t save them.
No, it was your strong hand, your arm,
and the light of your face
because you were pleased with them.
4It’s you, God! You who are my king,
the one who orders salvation for Jacob.
5We’ve pushed our foes away by your help;
we’ve trampled our enemies by your name.
6No, I won’t trust in my bow;
my sword won’t save me
7because it’s you who saved us from our foes,
you who put those who hate us to shame.
8So we glory in God at all times
and give thanks to your name forever. Selah
9But now you’ve rejected and humiliated us.
You no longer accompany our armies.
10You make us retreat from the enemy;
our adversaries plunder us.
11You’ve handed us over like sheep for butchering;
you’ve scattered us among the nations.
12You’ve sold your people for nothing,
not even bothering to set a decent price.
13You’ve made us a joke to all our neighbors;
we’re mocked and ridiculed by everyone around us.
14You’ve made us a bad joke to the nations,
something to be laughed at by all peoples.
15All day long my disgrace confronts me,
and shame covers my face
16because of the voices of those
who make fun of me and bad-mouth me,
because of the enemy who is out for revenge.
17All this has come upon us,
but we haven’t forgotten you
or broken your covenant.
18Our hearts haven’t turned away,
neither have our steps strayed from your way.
19But you’ve crushed us in the place where jackals#44.19 Or the sea monster(s) live,
covering us with deepest darkness.
20If we had forgotten the name of our God
or spread out our hands to some strange deity,
21wouldn’t God have discovered it?
After all, God knows every secret of the heart.
22No, God, it’s because of you that we are getting killed every day—
it’s because of you that we are considered sheep ready for slaughter.
23Wake up! Why are you sleeping, Lord?
Get up! Don’t reject us forever!
24Why are you hiding your face,
forgetting our suffering and oppression?
25Look: we’re going down to the dust;
our stomachs are flat on the ground!
26Stand up! Help us!
Save us for the sake of your faithful love.

Come to Our Help
To the choirmaster. #Ps. 42, titleA Maskil#44:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term of the Sons of Korah.
1O God, we have heard with our ears,
#
Ps. 78:3; Ex. 10:2; 12:26, 27; 13:8, 14, 15; Judg. 6:13; See Deut. 6:20-23 our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
# See Ps. 77:5 in the days of old:
2you with your own hand #Ps. 78:55; 80:8; Josh. 3:10 drove out the nations,
but #Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:10 them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
but #Ps. 80:9-11; [Jer. 17:8]them you set free;
3for not #Josh. 24:12; Hos. 1:7 by their own sword did they win the land,
nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
and #See Ps. 4:6 the light of your face,
#
Deut. 4:37; 7:7, 8; 10:15 for you delighted in them.
4 #
Ps. 74:12 You are my King, O God;
# See Ps. 42:8 ordain salvation for Jacob!
5Through you we #[Deut. 33:17; Dan. 8:4] push down our foes;
through your name we #Ps. 60:12tread down those who rise up against us.
6For not in #[Ps. 33:16; 1 Sam. 17:47]my bow do I trust,
nor can my sword save me.
7But you have saved us from our foes
and have #See Ps. 35:4put to shame those who hate us.
8 # See Ps. 34:2 In God we have boasted continually,
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
9But you have #ver. 23; Ps. 43:2; 60:1, 10; 74:1; 108:11; See Ps. 89:38-45 rejected us and disgraced us
and #[Judg. 4:14; 2 Sam. 5:24]have not gone out with our armies.
10You have made us #Lev. 26:17; Deut. 28:25; Josh. 7:8, 12turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
11You have made us like #[ver. 22] sheep for slaughter
and have #Ps. 106:27; Lev. 26:33; Deut. 4:27; 28:64; Isa. 52:3; Ezek. 20:23; [John 7:35; 1 Pet. 1:1]scattered us among the nations.
12 # [Deut. 32:30; Judg. 2:14; 3:8; Jer. 15:13] You have sold your people for a trifle,
demanding no high price for them.
13You have made us #Ps. 39:8; 79:4; 89:41; 119:22; [Neh. 2:17] the taunt of our neighbors,
the derision and #[Ps. 80:6]scorn of those around us.
14You have made us #Jer. 24:9; See Job 17:6 a byword among the nations,
# See Job 16:4 a laughingstock#44:14 Hebrew a shaking of the head among the peoples.
15All day long my disgrace is before me,
and #2 Chr. 32:21shame has covered my face
16at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
at the sight of #Ps. 8:2the enemy and the avenger.

Dan. 9:13
All this has come upon us,
though we have not forgotten you,
and we have not been false to your covenant.
18Our heart has not turned back,
nor have our #Ps. 37:31 steps #Ps. 119:51, 157; Job 23:11departed from your way;

Ps. 139:1; Jer. 17:10 would not God discover this?
# [John 2:25; Heb. 4:13] For he knows the secrets of the heart.
22Yet #ver. 11; Cited Rom. 8:36for your sake we are killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
23 # See Ps. 35:23 Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
Rouse yourself! #ver. 9Do not reject us forever!
24Why #See Job 13:24do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
25For our #Ps. 119:25soul is bowed down to the dust;
our belly clings to the ground.
26Rise up; #Ps. 63:7 come to our help!
# See Ps. 25:22 Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!
