Mark 2

Healing and forgiveness
1After a few days, Jesus went back to Capernaum, and people heard that he was at home. 2So many gathered that there was no longer space, not even near the door. Jesus was speaking the word to them. 3Some people arrived, and four of them were bringing to him a man who was paralyzed. 4They couldn’t carry him through the crowd, so they tore off part of the roof above where Jesus was. When they had made an opening, they lowered the mat on which the paralyzed man was lying. 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven!”
6Some legal experts were sitting there, muttering among themselves, 7“Why does he speak this way? He’s insulting God. Only the one God can forgive sins.”
8Jesus immediately recognized what they were discussing, and he said to them, “Why do you fill your minds with these questions? 9Which is easier—to say to a paralyzed person, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take up your bed, and walk’? 10But so you will know that the Human One#2.10 Or Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed, 11“Get up, take your mat, and go home.”
12Jesus raised him up, and right away he picked up his mat and walked out in front of everybody. They were all amazed and praised God, saying, “We’ve never seen anything like this!”
Eating with sinners
13Jesus went out beside the lake again. The whole crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14As he continued along, he saw Levi, Alphaeus’ son, sitting at a kiosk for collecting taxes. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” Levi got up and followed him.
15Jesus sat down to eat at Levi’s house. Many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Jesus and his disciples. Indeed, many of them had become his followers. 16When some of the legal experts from among the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples, “Why is he eating with sinners and tax collectors?”
17When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. I didn’t come to call righteous people, but sinners.”
When to fast
18John’s disciples and the Pharisees had a habit of fasting. Some people asked Jesus, “Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but yours don’t?”
19Jesus said, “The wedding guests can’t fast while the groom is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they can’t fast. 20But the days will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
21“No one sews a piece of new, unshrunk cloth on old clothes; otherwise, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and makes a worse tear. 22No one pours new wine into old leather wineskins; otherwise, the wine would burst the wineskins and the wine would be lost and the wineskins destroyed. But new wine is for new wineskins.”
Scripture and the Sabbath
23Jesus went through the wheat fields on the Sabbath. As the disciples made their way, they were picking the heads of wheat. 24The Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look! Why are they breaking the Sabbath law?”
25He said to them, “Haven’t you ever read what David did when he was in need, when he and those with him were hungry? 26During the time when Abiathar was high priest, David went into God’s house and ate the bread of the presence, which only the priests were allowed to eat. He also gave bread to those who were with him.” 27Then he said, “The Sabbath was created for humans; humans weren’t created for the Sabbath. 28This is why the Human One#2.28 Or Son of Man is Lord even over the Sabbath.”

Mark 2

The Son of Man Forgives and Heals
1When # Mt 9:1-8; Lk 5:17-26 He entered Capernaum # Lk 10:15 again after some days, it was reported that He was at home. 2So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and He was speaking the message # Mk 4:14; Jn 18:32 to them. 3Then they came to Him bringing a paralytic, # Mt 4:24; 8:6; 9:2,6; Mk 2:3-10 carried by four men. 4Since they were not able to bring him to # Other mss read able to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above where He was. And when they had broken through, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying.
5Seeing their faith, # Mt 8:10; Ac 3:16; Rm 1:8; 1Co 2:5; Gl 2:16; 1Tm 1:2; Heb 4:2 Jesus told the paralytic, “Son, your sins # Jn 15:22 are forgiven.” # Mt 9:2,5; Lk 5:20,23; 7:48
6But some of the scribes # Mt 2:4 were sitting there, thinking # Mk 9:33 to themselves: # Or thinking in their hearts 7“Why does He speak like this? He’s blaspheming! # Ex 22:28; Mk 3:29; Rv 13:6 Who can forgive # Ps 25:11; Mt 9:2 sins # Jn 15:22 but God alone? ” # Ex 34:6-7; Is 43:25; 44:2
8Right away # Mk 10:52 Jesus understood in His spirit # Lk 5:22; 16:15; Jn 2:25 that they were thinking like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? # Or minds 9Which is easier: # Lk 16:17; 18:25 to say to the paralytic, # Mk 2:3 ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’? # Mt 11:5 10But so you may know that the Son of Man # Ps 8:4; Lk 5:24; Ac 7:56 has authority # Mt 28:18; Mk 1:22 on earth to forgive sins,” # Jn 15:22 He told the paralytic, 11“I tell you: get up, # Mk 5:41 pick up your mat, and go home.”
12Immediately he got up, picked up the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded # Ac 10:45 and gave glory # Jn 11:4; 17:1; 1Pt 2:12 to God, # Lk 2:14 saying, “We have never seen anything like this! ” # Mt 9:33
The Call of Matthew
13Then # Mt 9:9-13; Lk 5:27-32 Jesus went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd was coming to Him, and He taught # Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 them. 14Then, moving on, He saw Levi # Lk 5:27,29 the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, # Lk 5:27 and He said to him, “Follow Me! ” # Lk 5:27 So he got up and followed # Lk 5:11; Jn 8:12 Him.
Dining with Sinners
15While He was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors # Lk 3:12; 18:13 and sinners # Mt 9:10; 1Tm 1:15 were also guests # Lit reclining (at the table); at important meals the custom was to recline on a mat at a low table and lean on the left elbow. # Mt 14:9; Rm 12:13 with Jesus and His disciples, because there were many who were following Him. 16When the scribes # Mt 2:4 of the Pharisees # Other mss read scribes and Pharisees # Mk 7:3 saw that He was eating # Mt 11:18 with sinners # 1Tm 1:15 and tax collectors, # Lk 3:12 they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat # Other mss add and drink with tax collectors and sinners? ”
17When Jesus heard this, He told them, “Those who are well don’t need # Mt 6:8 a doctor, # Col 4:14 but the sick # Lk 5:31 do need one. I didn’t come to call the righteous, # Mt 13:17; Rm 1:17 but sinners.” # Lk 5:32
A Question about Fasting
18Now # Mt 9:14-17; Lk 5:33-39 John’s # Mk 1:4 disciples # Jn 3:25 and the Pharisees # Other mss read the disciples of John and of the Pharisees # Mk 7:3 were fasting. # Lk 18:12; Ac 13:2 People came and asked Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but Your disciples do not fast? ”
19Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests # Lit The sons of the bridal chamber cannot fast while the groom # Jn 2:9 is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast. 20But the time # Lit the days will come # Mk 13:24 when the groom is taken away from them, # Lk 17:22; Jn 16:16-20 and then they will fast # Lk 18:12 in that day. 21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new patch pulls away from the old cloth, # Lk 19:36 and a worse tear is made. 22And no one puts new wine # Lk 5:37 into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst # Jn 6:27 the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. # Other mss read the wine spills out and the skins will be ruined But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”
Lord of the Sabbath
23On # Mt 12:1-8; Lk 6:1-5 the Sabbath He was going through the grainfields, and His disciples # Mk 10:10 began to make their way picking some heads of grain. 24The Pharisees # Mk 7:3 said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful # Lk 6:2 on the Sabbath? ”
25He said to them, “Have you never read what David # Lk 1:27 and those who were with him did when he was in need # Ac 2:45 and hungry # Rv 7:16 — 26how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar # 1Sm 21:1-6 the high priest # Lv 16:32 and ate the sacred bread # Ex 25:30 — which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests # Ac 4:1 — and also gave some to his companions? ” 27Then He told them, “The Sabbath was made for # Or because of man and not man for # Or because of the Sabbath. # Col 2:16 28Therefore, the Son of Man # Mk 2:10 is Lord # Rm 7:25; 1Co 8:6; Col 3:22 even of the Sabbath.” # Lk 6:5
