Job 37
37
1Oh, my mind is disturbed by this
and is more troubled than usual.
2Listen closely to the rumble of his voice,
the roar issuing from his mouth.
3He looses it under the whole sky,
his lightning on earth’s edges.
4After it, a voice roars;
he thunders with a mighty voice,
and no one can stop it
when his voice is heard.
5God roars with his wondrous voice;
he does great things we can’t know.
6He says to the snow, “Fall to earth,”
and to the downpour of rain, “Be a mighty shower.”
7He stamps the hand of every person
so all can know his work.#37.7 Or that everyone he has made can know it
8The wild beast enters its lair,
lies down in its den.
9The storm comes from its chamber,
the cold from the north wind.
10By God’s breath ice forms;
water’s expanse becomes solid.
11He also fills clouds with moisture;
his lightning scatters clouds.
12He overturns the circling clouds;#37.12 Heb uncertain
by his guidance they do#37.12 Heb lacks they do. their work,
doing everything he commands over the entire earth.
13Whether for punishment, for his world,
or for kindness,
God makes it all happen.
14Hear this, Job;
stop and ponder God’s mighty deeds.
15Do you realize that when God commands them,
his clouds produce lightning?
16Do you understand the positioning of the clouds,
the amazing deeds of one with perfect knowledge,
17you whose clothes are hot
when earth is calmed by the south wind?
18Can you form the sky with him,
hard like a mirror made of metal?
19Tell us what we should say to him;
we can’t present our case due to darkness.
20Should someone inform him that I wish to speak,
or would anyone say he wants to be devoured?
Divine splendor
21For now, no one can look at the sun;
it is bright in the sky;
the wind has passed and cleared away the clouds.
22From the north comes golden light,
the awesome splendor of God.
23As for the Almighty, we can’t find him—
he is powerful and just, abundantly righteous—
he won’t respond.
24Therefore, people fear him;
none of the wise#37.24 Or wise in heart; cf 9:4 can see him.

Job 37
37
1“Yes, at this my heart trembles,
and is moved out of its place.
2 Hear, oh, hear the noise of his voice,
the sound that goes out of his mouth.
3 He sends it out under the whole sky,
and his lightning to the ends of the earth.
4 After it a voice roars.
He thunders with the voice of his majesty.
He doesn’t hold back anything when his voice is heard.
5 God thunders marvellously with his voice.
He does great things, which we can’t comprehend.
6 For he says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
likewise to the shower of rain,
and to the showers of his mighty rain.
7 He seals up the hand of every man,
that all men whom he has made may know it.
8Then the animals take cover,
and remain in their dens.
9 Out of its room comes the storm,
and cold out of the north.
10 By the breath of God, ice is given,
and the width of the waters is frozen.
11Yes, he loads the thick cloud with moisture.
He spreads abroad the cloud of his lightning.
12 It is turned around by his guidance,
that they may do whatever he commands them
on the surface of the habitable world,
13whether it is for correction, or for his land,
or for loving kindness, that he causes it to come.
14“Listen to this, Job.
Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
15Do you know how God controls them,
and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine?
16Do you know the workings of the clouds,
the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?
17You whose clothing is warm
when the earth is still by reason of the south wind?
18Can you, with him, spread out the sky,
which is strong as a cast metal mirror?
19 Teach us what we will tell him,
for we can’t make our case by reason of darkness.
20 Will it be told him that I would speak?
Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up?
21 Now men don’t see the light which is bright in the skies,
but the wind passes, and clears them.
22 Out of the north comes golden splendour.
With God is awesome majesty.
23 We can’t reach the Almighty.
He is exalted in power.
In justice and great righteousness, he will not oppress.
24 Therefore men revere him.
He doesn’t regard any who are wise of heart.”
