Genesis 48
48
1After this happened, Joseph was told,#48.1 LXX, Syr, Tg, Vulg; MT he told âYour father is getting weaker,â so he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2When Jacob was informed,#48.2 LXX; MT he informed âYour son Joseph is here now,â he#48.2 Heb Israel pulled himself together and sat up in bed. 3Jacob said to Joseph, âGod Almighty#48.3 Heb El Shaddai or God of the Mountain appeared to me in Luz in the land of Canaan. He blessed me 4and said to me, âI am about to give you many children, to increase your numbers, and to make you a large group of peoples. I will give this land to your descendants following you as an enduring possession.â 5Now, your two sons born to you in the land of Egypt before I arrived in Egypt are my own. Ephraim and Manasseh are just like Reuben and Simeon to me. 6Your family who is born to you after them are yours, but their inheritance will be determined under their brothersâ names. 7When I came back from Paddan-aram,#48.7 Sam, LXX, Syr; MT lacks aram. Rachel died, to my sorrow, on the road in the land of Canaan, with some distance yet to go to Ephrathah, so I buried her there near the road to Ephrathah,#48.7 Sam; MT Ephrath which is Bethlehem.â
8When Israel saw Josephâs sons, he said, âWho are these?â
9Joseph told his father, âTheyâre my sons, whom God gave me here.â
Israel said, âBring them to me and I will bless them.â 10Because Israelâs eyesight had failed from old age and he wasnât able to see, Joseph brought them close to him, and he kissed and embraced them.
11Israel said to Joseph, âI didnât expect Iâd see your face, but now God has shown me your children too.â 12Then Joseph took them from Israelâs knees, and he bowed low with his face to the ground. 13Joseph took both of them, Ephraim in his right hand at Israelâs left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand at Israelâs right hand, and brought them close to him. 14But Israel put out his right hand and placed it on the head of Ephraim, the younger one, and his left hand on Manassehâs head, crossing his hands because Manasseh was the oldest son. 15He blessed them#48.15 LXX; MT Joseph and said,
âMay the God before whom my fathers
Abraham and Isaac walked,
may the God who was my shepherd
from the beginning until this day,
16may the divine messenger who protected me from all harm,
bless the young men.
Through them may my name be kept alive
and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac.
May they grow into a great multitude
throughout the land.â
17When Joseph saw that his father had placed his right hand on Ephraimâs head, he was upset and grasped his fatherâs hand to move it from Ephraimâs head to Manassehâs head. 18Joseph said to his father, âNo, my father! This is the oldest son. Put your right hand on his head.â
19But his father refused and said, âI know, my son, I know. Heâll become a people too, and heâll also be great. But his younger brother will be greater than he will, and his descendants will become many nations.â 20Israel blessed them that day, saying,
âThrough you, Israel will pronounce blessings, saying,
âMay God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.ââ
So Israel put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21Then Israel said to Joseph, âIâm about to die. God will be with you and return you to the land of your fathers. 22Iâm giving you one portion more than to your brothers,#48.22 Heb uncertain a portion that I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.â

BerÄshith (Genesis) 48
48
1And after these events it came to be that it was said to YosÄph, âSee, your father is sick.â And he took with him his two sons, Menashsheh and Ephrayim.
2And Yaâaqoḇ was told, âSee, your son YosÄph is coming to you.â And YisraâÄl strengthened himself and sat up on the bed.
3And Yaâaqoḇ said to YosÄph, âÄl Shaddai appeared to me at Luz in the land of Kenaâan and blessed me,
4and said to me, âSee, I am making you fruitful and shall increase you and make of you an assembly of peoples, and give this land to your seed after you as an everlasting possession.â
5âAnd now, your two sons, Ephrayim and Menashsheh, who were born to you in the land of Mitsrayim before I came to you in Mitsrayim, are mine â as ReâuḇÄn and Shimâon, they are mine.
6âYour offspring whom you shall bring forth after them are yours, and let them be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.
7And I, when I came from Paddan, RahÌŁÄl died beside me in the land of Kenaâan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath. And I buried her there on the way to Ephrath, that is BÄyth LehÌŁem.
8And YisraâÄl saw YosÄphâs sons, and said, âWho are these?â
9And YosÄph said to his father, âThey are my sons, whom Elohim has given me in this place.â And he said, âPlease bring them to me, and let me bless them.â
10And the eyes of YisraâÄl were dim with age, and he was unable to see. And he drew them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
11And YisraâÄl said to YosÄph, âI had not thought to see your face. But see, Elohim has also shown me your seed!â
12So YosÄph brought them from between his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth.
13And YosÄph took them both, Ephrayim with his right hand toward YisraâÄlâs left hand, and Menashsheh with his left hand toward YisraâÄlâs right hand, and brought them near him.
14And YisraâÄl stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephrayimâs head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Menashshehâs head, consciously directing his hands, for Menashsheh was the first-born.
15And he blessed YosÄph, and said, âThe Elohim before whom my fathers Aḇraham and YitshÌŁaq walked, the Elohim who has fed me all my life long to this day,
16the Messenger who has redeemed me from all evil â bless the youths! And let my name be called upon them, and the name of my fathers Aḇraham and YitshÌŁaq. And let them increase to a multitude in the midst of the earth.â
17And when YosÄph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephrayim, it was evil in his eyes; and he took hold of his fatherâs hand to remove it from the head of Ephrayim to the head of Menashsheh.
18And YosÄph said to his father, âNot so, my father, for this one is the first-born, put your right hand on his head.â
19But his father refused and said, âI know, my son, I know. He also becomes a people, and he also is great. And yet, his younger brother is greater than he, and his seed is to become the completeness of the nations.â
20And he blessed them on that day, saying, âIn you YisraâÄl shall bless, saying, âElohim make you as Ephrayim and as Menashsheh!â â Thus he put Ephrayim before Menashsheh.
21And YisraâÄl said to YosÄph, âSee, I am dying, but Elohim shall be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
22And I, I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
