Exodus 40

Moses sets up the dwelling
1The LORD spoke to Moses: 2Set up the meeting tent dwelling on the first day of the first month.#40.2 March–April, Abib 3Place the chest containing the covenant inside the dwelling. Hide the chest from view with the veil. 4Bring in the table and arrange its items. Bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps. 5Place the gold altar for burning incense in front of the chest containing the covenant. Set up the screen at the dwelling’s entrance. 6Put the altar for entirely burned offerings in front of the entrance to the meeting tent dwelling. 7Put the washbasin between the meeting tent and the altar and put water in it. 8Set up the courtyard all around. Hang up the screen at the courtyard gate. 9Then take the anointing oil and anoint the dwelling and everything in it. Make holy the dwelling and all its equipment, and it will be holy. 10Anoint the altar for entirely burned offerings and all its equipment. Make the altar holy, and the altar will be most holy. 11Anoint the washbasin with its stand and make it holy.
12Then bring Aaron and his sons to the meeting tent’s entrance and wash them with water. 13Dress Aaron in the holy clothes. Anoint him and make him holy so that he may serve me as priest. 14Then bring his sons and dress them in tunics. 15Anoint them like you anointed their father so that they may serve me as priests. Their anointing is to the priesthood for all time in every generation.
16Moses did everything exactly as the LORD had commanded him. 17In the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, the dwelling was set up. 18Moses set up the dwelling. He laid out its bases. He set up its boards, inserted its bars, and raised up its posts. 19He spread the tent out over the dwelling, and he put the covering of the tent over it, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 20He took the covenant document and placed it inside the chest. He put the poles on the chest, and he set the cover on top of the chest. 21He brought the chest into the dwelling. He set up the veil as a screen to hide from view the chest containing the covenant, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 22He placed the table in the meeting tent, on the north side of the dwelling, outside the veil. 23He set the bread in its proper place on the table in the LORD’s presence, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 24He put the lampstand in the meeting tent, opposite the table on the south side of the dwelling. 25He set up the lamps in the LORD’s presence, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 26He put the gold altar in the meeting tent in front of the veil. 27He burned sweet-smelling incense on it, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 28He also set up the screen at the entrance to the dwelling. 29He placed the altar for entirely burned offerings at the entrance to the meeting tent dwelling. He offered the entirely burned offering and the grain offering on it, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 30He put the washbasin between the meeting tent and the altar, and put water in it for washing. 31Moses, Aaron, and his sons used it to wash their hands and their feet. 32Whenever they went into the meeting tent and whenever they approached the altar, they washed themselves, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 33He set up the courtyard around the dwelling and the altar, and he hung up the screen at the courtyard’s gate.
God’s presence fills the dwelling!
When Moses had finished all the work, 34the cloud covered the meeting tent and the LORD’s glorious presence filled the dwelling. 35Moses couldn’t enter the meeting tent because the cloud had settled on it, and the LORD’s glorious presence filled the dwelling. 36Whenever the cloud rose from the dwelling, the Israelites would set out on their journeys. 37But if the cloud didn’t rise, then they didn’t set out until the day it rose. 38The LORD’s cloud stayed over the dwelling during the day, with lightning in it at night, clearly visible to the whole household of Israel at every stage of their journey.

The Lord's Tent Is Set Up
1The Lord said to Moses:
2Set up my tent on the first day of the year#40.2 first day of the year: See the note at 12.2. 3and put the chest with the Ten Commandments behind the inside curtain.#40.3 inside curtain: Separating the holy place from the most holy place. 4Bring in the table and set on it those things that are made for it. Also bring in the lampstand and attach the lamps to it. 5Then place the gold altar of incense in front of the sacred chest and hang a curtain at the entrance to the tent. 6Set the altar for burning sacrifices in front of the entrance to my tent. 7Put the large bronze bowl between the tent and the altar and fill the bowl with water. 8Surround the tent and the altar with the wall of curtains and hang the curtain that was made for the entrance.
9Use the sacred olive oil to dedicate to me the tent and everything in it. 10Do the same thing with the altar for offering sacrifices and its equipment 11and with the bowl and its stand. 12Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent and tell them to wash themselves. 13Dress Aaron in the priestly clothes, then use the sacred olive oil to ordain him and dedicate him to me as my priest. 14Put the priestly robes on Aaron's sons 15and ordain them in the same way, so they and their descendants will always be my priests.
16Moses followed the Lord's instructions. 17And on the first day of the first month#40.17 first month: See the note at 12.2. of the second year, the sacred tent was set up. 18The posts, stands, and framework were put in place, 19then the two layers of coverings were hung over them. 20The stones with the Ten Commandments written on them were stored in the sacred chest, the place of mercy#40.20 place of mercy: See the note at 26.34. was put on top of it, and the carrying poles were attached. 21The chest was brought into the tent and set behind the curtain in the most holy place. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.
22The table for the sacred bread was put along the north wall of the holy place, 23after which the bread was set on the table. 24The lampstand was put along the south wall, 25then the lamps were attached to it there in the presence of the Lord. 26The gold incense altar was set up in front of the curtain, 27and sweet-smelling incense was burned on it. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.
28The curtain was hung at the entrance to the sacred tent. 29Then the altar for offering sacrifices was put in front of the tent, and animal sacrifices and gifts of grain were offered there. 30The large bronze bowl was placed between the altar and the entrance to the tent. It was filled with water, 31then Moses and Aaron, together with Aaron's sons, washed their hands and feet. 32In fact, they washed each time before entering the tent or offering sacrifices at the altar. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.
33Finally, Moses had the curtains hung around the courtyard and at the entrance.
The Glory of the Lord
34 #
1 K 8.10,11; Is 6.4; Ez 43.4,5; Rev 15.8. Suddenly the sacred tent was covered by a thick cloud and filled with the glory of the Lord. 35And so, Moses could not enter the tent. 36Whenever the cloud moved from the tent, the people would break camp and follow; 37then they would set up camp and stay there, until it moved again. 38No matter where the people traveled, the Lord was with them. Each day his cloud was over the tent, and each night a fire could be seen in the cloud.
