God’s chest is brought to Jerusalem
1Once again David assembled the select warriors of Israel, thirty thousand strong. 2David and all the troops who were with him set out for Baalah, which is Kiriath-jearim of Judah,#6.2 DSS (4QSama), 1 Chron 13:6; MT from Baale-judah to bring God’s chest up from there—the chest that is called by the name#6.2 MT repeats name, but 1 Chron 13:6 omits one of these and LXX reads the first as there. of the LORD of heavenly forces, who sits enthroned on the winged creatures. 3They loaded God’s chest on a new cart and carried it from Abinadab’s house, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, Abinadab’s sons, were driving the new cart. 4#6.4 LXX, DSS (4QSama), 1 Chron 13:7; MT repeats they carried it from the house of Abinadab on the hill; Uzzah has dropped out and must be restored.Uzzah was beside God’s chest while Ahio was walking in front of it. 5Meanwhile, David and the entire house of Israel celebrated in the LORD’s presence with all their strength, with songs,#6.5 LXX, DSS (4QSama), 1 Chron 13:8; MT with all sorts of pine instruments zithers, harps, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals.
6When they approached Nacon’s threshing floor, Uzzah reached out to God’s chest and grabbed it because the oxen had stumbled.#6.6 Heb uncertain 7The LORD became angry at Uzzah, and God struck him there because of his mistake,#6.7 Heb uncertain; LXX lacks this phrase; cf Targ, Syr, 1 Chron 13:10 because he had placed his hand on the chest. and he died there next to God’s chest. 8Then David got angry because the LORD’s anger lashed out against Uzzah, and so that place is called Perez-uzzah today.#6.8 Perez-uzzah means Uzzah-outbreak; cf 2 Sam 5:20.
9David was frightened by the LORD that day. “How will I ever bring the LORD’s chest to me?” he asked. 10So David didn’t take the chest away with him to David’s City. Instead, he had it put in the house of Obed-edom, who was from Gath. 11The LORD’s chest stayed with Obed-edom’s household in Gath for three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom’s household and all that he had.
12King David was told, “The LORD has blessed Obed-edom’s family and everything he has because of God’s chest being there.”#6.12 Heb lacks being there. So David went and brought God’s chest up from Obed-edom’s house to David’s City with celebration. 13Whenever those bearing the chest advanced six steps, David sacrificed an ox and a fatling calf. 14David, dressed in a linen priestly vest,#6.14 Heb ephod danced with all his strength before the LORD. 15This is how David and the entire house of Israel brought up the LORD’s chest with shouts and trumpet blasts.
16As the LORD’s chest entered David’s City, Saul’s daughter Michal was watching from a window. She saw King David jumping and dancing before the LORD, and she lost all respect for him.#6.16 Or despised him for it
17The LORD’s chest was brought in and put in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered entirely burned offerings in the LORD’s presence in addition to well-being sacrifices. 18When David finished offering the entirely burned offerings and the well-being sacrifices, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of heavenly forces. 19He distributed food among all the people of Israel—to the whole crowd, male and female—each receiving a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. Then all the people went back to their homes.
20David went home to bless his household, but Saul’s daughter Michal came out to meet him. “How did Israel’s king honor himself today?” she said. “By exposing himself in plain view of the female servants of his subjects like any indecent person would!”
21David replied to Michal, “I was celebrating before the LORD, who chose me over your father and his entire family, and who appointed me leader over the LORD’s people, over Israel—and I will celebrate before the LORD again! 22I may humiliate myself even more, and I may be humbled in my own eyes, but I will be honored by the female servants you are talking about!”
23Michal, Saul’s daughter, had no children to the day she died.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
1Ch 13:1–14; 15:25–16:3
1Again David gathered all of the chosen men in Israel, thirty thousand. 2#1Sa 4:4; 7:1David and all of the people who were with him arose and went from Baalah of Judah to bring up the ark of God, so named for the name of the Lord of Hosts who sits enthroned among the cherubim that are upon it. 3#1Sa 6:7They loaded the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio the sons of Abinadab were driving the new cart. 4#1Ch 13:7They brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on the hill, and Ahio was walking in front of the ark. 5#1Ch 13:8; Ps 150:3–5Meanwhile, David and the entire house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord with all sorts of instruments made of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals.
6#Nu 4:15; 1Ch 13:9When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had stumbled. 7#1Sa 6:19; 1Ch 15:13The Lord became angry against Uzzah, and God struck him down on the spot for his irreverence. He died there beside the ark of God.
8David became angry because of the outburst of the Lord against Uzzah; that place is called Perez Uzzah to this day.
9#Ps 119:120David feared the Lord that day, and he thought, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10#1Ch 26:4–8So David did not allow the ark of the Lord to be brought to him in the City of David. Instead, David redirected it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11#Ge 30:27; 39:5The ark of the Lord remained at the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household.
12#1Ki 8:1When it was reported to King David, “The Lord has blessed Obed-Edom and everything that belongs to him, for the sake of the ark of God,” David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13#1Ki 8:5; Nu 4:15When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, David would sacrifice an ox and a fattened steer. 14#Ex 15:20; 1Sa 2:18David danced before the Lord with all of his might, and he wore a linen ephod. 15So David and the whole house of Israel escorted the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the horn.
16#1Ch 15:29; 2Sa 3:14When the ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked down from the window, and upon seeing King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she thought contemptuously of him in her mind.
17#1Ch 15:1; 2Ch 1:4They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had erected for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18#1Ki 8:55When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people before the Lord of Hosts. 19#Ne 8:10He distributed to all of the people, the entire multitude of Israel, both men and women, one bread cake, one date cake, and one raisin cake to each one. Then all of the people left, each to his house.
20#2Sa 6:16; 6:14; Jdg 9:4David returned to bless his household, but Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet him. She said, “How the king of Israel has dignified himself today, exposing himself this day in the sight of his servant’s slave girls like one of the rabble might shamelessly expose himself.”
21#1Sa 13:14; 15:28Then David responded to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me over your father and over everyone in his household, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. I was celebrating before the Lord. 22I will humble myself even more than this and be abased in my own eyes. But by the maidservants, of whom you have spoken, I will be held in honor.”
23#Mt 1:25Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
