1And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying, like a sound of thunder, “Come and see.”
2And I looked and saw a white horse,#See Zech. 6:3 and he who sat on it holding a bow. And a crown was given to him, and he went out overcoming and to overcome.
3And when He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.”
4And another horse, fiery red,#See Zech. 1:8; Zech. 6:2 went out. And it was given to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that they should slay one another. And a great sword was given to him.
5And when He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” And I looked and saw a black horse,#See Zech. 6:2 and he who sat on it holding a pair of scales in his hand.#See Ezek. 4:16
6And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A measure of wheat for a denarius,#Roman monetary unit - a day’s wage. and three measures of barley for a denarius.#Roman monetary unit - a day’s wage. And do not harm the oil and the wine.”
7And when He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.”
8And I looked and saw a green horse.#See Zech. 6:3. Traditionally rendered as pale; Gk. chloros. And he who sat on it had the name Death,#See Hosea 13:14 and She’ol#See Hosea 13:14 followed with him. And authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and by the beasts of the earth.#See Ezek. 5:12; Ezek. 5:17; Ezek. 14:13-19
9And when He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the slaughter-place the beings of those having been slain for the Word of Elohim and for the witness which they held,
10and they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Master, set-apart and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”
11And there was given to each one a white robe, and they were told that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brothers, who would be killed as they were, was completed.
12And I looked when He opened the sixth seal and saw a great earthquake came to be. And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.
13And the stars of the heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its unripe figs, being shaken by a strong wind.
14And heaven departed like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.
15And the sovereigns of the earth, and the great ones, and the rich ones, and the commanders, and the mighty, and every slave and every free one, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains,
16and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us#Hosea 10:8 from the face of Him sitting on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb,
17because the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

Opening the seven seals
1At the same time that I saw the Lamb open the first of the seven seals, I heard one of the four living creatures shout with a voice like thunder. It said, “Come out!” 2Then I saw a white horse. Its rider carried a bow and was given a crown. He had already won some victories, and he went out to win more.#Zec 1.8; 6.3,6.
3When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come out!” 4Then another horse came out. It was fiery red. And its rider was given the power to take away all peace from the earth, so that people would slaughter one another. He was also given a big sword.#Zec 1.8; 6.2.
5When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come out!” Then I saw a black horse, and its rider had a balance scale in one hand.#Zec 6.2,6. 6I heard what sounded like a voice from somewhere among the four living creatures. It said, “A litre of wheat will cost you a whole day's wages! Three litres of barley will cost you a day's wages too. But don't ruin the olive oil or the wine.”
7When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come out!” 8Then I saw a pale green horse. Its rider was named Death, and Death's Kingdom followed behind. They were given power over one fourth of the earth, and they could kill its people with swords, famines, diseases, and wild animals.#Ez 14.21.
9When the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of everyone who had been killed for speaking God's message and telling about their faith. 10They shouted, “Master, you are holy and faithful! How long will it be before you judge and punish the people of this earth who killed us?”
11Then each of those who had been killed was given a white robe and told to rest for a little while. They had to wait until the complete number of the Lord's other servants and followers would be killed.
12When I saw the Lamb open the sixth seal, I looked and saw a great earthquake. The sun turned as dark as sackcloth,#6.12 sackcloth: A rough, dark-coloured cloth made from goat or camel hair and used to make grain sacks. It was worn in times of trouble or sorrow. and the moon became as red as blood.#Rev 11.13; 16.18; Is 13.10; Jl 2.10,31; 3.15; Mt 24.29; Mk 13.24-25; Lk 21.25. 13The stars in the sky fell to earth, just like figs shaken loose by a storm.#Is 34.4. 14Then the sky was rolled up like a scroll,#6.14 scroll: See the note at 5.1. and all mountains and islands were moved from their places.#Rev 16.20.
15The kings of the earth, its famous people, and its military leaders hid in caves or behind rocks on the mountains. They hid there together with the rich and the powerful and with all the slaves and free people.#Is 2.19,21. 16Then they shouted to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us! Hide us from the one who sits on the throne and from the anger of the Lamb.#Ho 10.8; Lk 23.30. 17That terrible day has come! God and the Lamb will show their anger, and who can face it?”#Jl 2.11; Ml 3.2.
