Tehillim (Psalms) 49
49
1Hear this, all you peoples; Give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,
2Both sons of mankind and sons of man, Rich and poor together.
3My mouth speaks wisdom, And the meditation of my heart brings understanding.
4I incline my ear to a parable; I expound my riddle on the lyre.
5Why should I fear in the days of evil, When the crookedness of my supplanters surrounds me?
6Those who are trusting in their riches And who are boasting in their great wealth?
7A brother does not redeem anyone at all, Neither give to Elohim a ransom for him;
8For the redemption of their lives is costly, And it shall cease forever;
9That he should still live forever, And not see the pit.
10For he sees wise men die, The foolish and the ignorant both perish, And shall leave their wealth to others.
11Their inner thoughts#Inner thoughts; some manuscripts have it as graves are their houses, forever; Their dwelling places, to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.
12But man does not remain in esteem, He is like the beasts that perish.
13This way of theirs is folly to them, Yet their followers are pleased with their words. Selah.
14Like sheep they shall be laid in She’ol; Death shall shepherd them; And the upright rule over them in the morning; And their form is consumed in She’ol, Far from their dwelling.
15But Elohim does redeem my being From the power of She’ol, For He does receive me. Selah.
16Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich, When the wealth of his house increases;
17For when he dies he takes none of it; His wealth does not go down after him.
18Though while he lived he blessed himself, And though they praise you when you do well for yourself,
19He has to go to the generation of his fathers; They never see the light.
20Man, who is rich, Yet does not understand, Shall be like the beasts, They shall perish.

Trusting Money Is Foolish
For the director of music. A song of the sons of Korah.
1Listen to this, all you nations.
Listen, all you who live on earth.
2Listen, both great and small,
rich and poor together.
3What I say is wise.
My heart speaks with understanding.
4I will pay attention to a wise saying.
I will explain my riddle on the harp.
5Why should I be afraid of bad days?
Why should I fear when evil men surround me?
6They trust in their money.
They brag about their riches.
7No one can buy back the life of another person.
No one can pay God for his own life.
8The price of a life is high.
No payment is ever enough.
9Do people live forever?
Don’t they all face death?
10See, even wise men die.
Fools and stupid people also die.
They leave their wealth to others.
11Their graves will always be their homes.
They will live there from now on,
even though they named places after themselves.
12Even rich people do not live forever.
Like the animals, people die.
13This is what will happen to people who trust in themselves.
And this will happen to their followers who believe them. Selah
14Like sheep, they must die.
And death will be their shepherd.
Honest people will rule over them in the morning.
Their bodies will rot in a grave far from home.
15But God will save my life.
He will take me from the grave. Selah
16Don’t be afraid of a rich man
because his house is more beautiful.
17He won’t take anything to the grave.
His wealth won’t die with him.
18He was praised when he was alive.
(And people may praise you when you succeed.)
19But he will go to where his ancestors are.
He will never see light again.
20Rich people with no understanding
are just like animals that die.
