Bemiḏbar (Numbers) 32
32
1And the children of Re’uḇĕn and the children of Gaḏ had much livestock, a large number. And they saw the land of Ya‛zĕr and the land of Gil‛aḏ and saw that the place was a place for livestock.
2So the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇĕn came and spoke to Mosheh, and to El‛azar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,
3“Ataroth, and Diḇon, and Ya‛zĕr, and Nimrah, and Ḥeshbon, and El‛alĕh, and Seḇam, and Neḇo, and Be‛on,
4“the land which יהוה had stricken before the congregation of Yisra’ĕl, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.
5And they said, “If we have found favour in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a possession, and do not let us pass over the Yardĕn.”
6And Mosheh said to the children of Gaḏ and to the children of Re’uḇĕn, “Are your brothers to go into the battle while you yourselves sit here?
7“Now why do you discourage the heart of the children of Yisra’ĕl from passing over into the land which יהוה has given them?
8“Thus your fathers did when I sent them away from Qaḏĕsh Barnĕa to see the land.
9“For when they went up to the wadi Eshkol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Yisra’ĕl, so that they did not go into the land which יהוה had given them.
10Then the displeasure of יהוה burned on that day, and He swore an oath, saying,”
11Not one of the men who came up from Mitsrayim, from twenty years old and above, is to see the land of which I swore to Aḇraham, Yitsḥaq, and Ya‛aqoḇ, because they did not follow Me completely,
12except Kalĕḇ son of Yephunneh, the Qenizzite, and Yehoshua son of Nun, for they have followed יהוה completely.’
13“So the displeasure of יהוה burned against Yisra’ĕl, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the eyes of יהוה was destroyed.
14“And see, you have risen in your father’s place, an increase of men, sinners, to add still more the burning displeasure of יהוה against Yisra’ĕl.
15For if you turn away from following Him, He shall once again leave them in the wilderness, and you shall destroy all these people.
16Then they came near to him and said, “Let us build sheep-enclosures here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,
17but let us ourselves be armed, hastening before the children of Yisra’ĕl until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall dwell in the walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18“We shall not return to our homes until every one of the children of Yisra’ĕl has received his inheritance.
19“For we shall not inherit with them on the other side of the Yardĕn and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Yardĕn.”
20And Mosheh said to them, “If you make this promise: if you arm yourselves before יהוה for battle,
21and all your armed ones pass over the Yardĕn before יהוה until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,
22and the land has been subdued before יהוה, then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless before יהוה and before Yisra’ĕl. And this land shall be your possession before יהוה.
23“But if you do not do so, then see, you shall sin against יהוה, and know: your sin is going to find you out.
24“Build cities for your little ones and enclosures for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”
25And the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇĕn spoke to Mosheh, saying, “Your servants are going to do as my master commands.
26“Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock are going to be there in the cities of Gil‛aḏ,
27“but your servants are passing over, every armed one of the army, before יהוה, to battle, as my master says.
28And Mosheh gave command concerning them to El‛azar the priest, to Yehoshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Yisra’ĕl.
29And Mosheh said to them, “If the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇĕn pass over the Yardĕn with you, every man armed for battle before יהוה, and the land has been subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gil‛aḏ as a possession.
30But if they do not pass over armed with you, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Kena‛an.
31Then the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇĕn answered, saying, “As יהוה has said to your servants, so we do.
32We ourselves are passing over armed before יהוה into the land of Kena‛an, but the possession of our inheritance remains with us beyond the Yardĕn.
33So Mosheh gave to the children of Gaḏ, to the children of Re’uḇĕn, and to half the tribe of Menashsheh, son of Yosĕph, the reign of Siḥon sovereign of the Amorites and the reign of Oḡ sovereign of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the land round about.
34And the children of Gaḏ built Diḇon and Ataroth and Aro‛ĕr,
35and Atroth, Shophan and Ya‛zĕr and Yoḡbehah,
36and Bĕyth Nimrah and Bĕyth Haran, walled cities, and enclosures for sheep.
37And the children of Re’uḇĕn built Ḥeshbon and El‛alĕh and Qiryathayim,
38Neḇo and Ba‛al Me‛on – the names being changed – and Shiḇmah. And they gave other names to the cities which they built.
39And the sons of Maḵir son of Menashsheh went to Gil‛aḏ and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.
40So Mosheh gave Gil‛aḏ to Maḵir, son of Menashsheh, and he dwelt in it.
41And Ya’ir son of Menashsheh went and took its small towns, and called them Ḥawoth Ya’ir.
42And Noḇaḥ went and took Qenath and its villages, and he called it Noḇaḥ, after his own name.

Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead
1Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of #ver. 3, 35; See ch. 21:32Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock. 2So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, 3#ver. 34 “Ataroth, #ver. 34; See ch. 21:30 Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, #ver. 38; ch. 33:47; Deut. 32:49; 1 Chr. 5:8; Isa. 15:2; 46:1; Jer. 48:1, 22Nebo, and Beon, 4the land #ch. 21:24, 34; [ver. 33]that the Lord struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” 5And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”
6But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here? 7Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the Lord has given them? 8Your fathers did this, #See ch. 13:3, 21-33; Deut. 1:22-28when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. 9For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the Lord had given them. 10#For ver. 10-12, see Deut. 1:34-36And the Lord’s anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying, 11‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, #ch. 14:29 from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give #See Gen. 50:24to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me, 12none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the #Josh. 14:6; 15:17 Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for #ch. 14:24; Deut. 1:36; Josh. 14:8, 9they have wholly followed the Lord.’ 13And the Lord’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them #See ch. 14:33-35 wander in the wilderness forty years, until #ch. 26:64, 65all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone. 14And behold, you have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the Lord against Israel! 15For if you #[Deut. 30:17; Josh. 22:16, 18; 2 Chr. 7:19, 20; 15:2]turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”
16Then they came near to him and said, #ver. 24“We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, 17but #Josh. 4:12, 13we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18#Josh. 22:4We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance. 19For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, #ver. 33; Josh. 12:1; 13:8because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.” 20So #Deut. 3:18; Josh. 1:13, 14; 4:12, 13Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the Lord for the war, 21and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the Lord, until he has #ch. 33:52driven out his enemies from before him 22and the land is subdued before the Lord; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the Lord and to Israel, and #Deut. 3:12, 15, 16, 18; Josh. 1:15; 13:8, 32; 22:4, 9this land shall be your possession before the Lord. 23But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and #[Gen. 44:16; Isa. 59:12]be sure your sin will find you out. 24#ver. 16; See ver. 34-38Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.” 25And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands. 26#Josh. 1:14Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead, 27#Josh. 4:12, 13 but your servants will pass over, every man who is #ch. 31:5armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord orders.”
28So #Josh. 1:13 Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to #ch. 27:18Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel. 29And Moses said to them, “If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the Lord, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession. 30However, if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.” 31And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, “What the Lord has said to your servants, we will do. 32We will pass over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
33And #Deut. 29:8; Josh. 12:6; 13:8; 22:4; See Deut. 3:12-17Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country. 34And the people of Gad built #ver. 3 Dibon, #ver. 3 Ataroth, #See Deut. 2:36Aroer, 35Atroth-shophan, #ver. 1; See ch. 21:32Jazer, Jogbehah, 36#[ver. 3] Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, #ver. 17fortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37And the people of Reuben built #ver. 3; ch. 21:27 Heshbon, #[See ver. 34 above]Elealeh, Kiriathaim, 38#See ver. 3 Nebo, and #[ver. 3; Josh. 13:17; Jer. 48:23] Baal-meon (#[Ex. 23:13; Josh. 23:7] their names were changed), and #[See ver. 36 above]Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built. 39And the sons of #Gen. 50:23; 1 Chr. 7:14, 15Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40And Moses #Deut. 3:13, 15; Josh. 13:31; 17:1gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it. 41And #Deut. 3:14; See 1 Chr. 2:21-23Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.#32:41 Havvoth-jair means the villages of Jair 42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
