Luqas (Luke) 4
4
1And יהושע, being filled with the Set-apart Spirit, returned from the Yardĕn and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2being tried for forty days by the devil. And in those days He did not eat at all, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
3And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of Elohim, command this stone to become bread.”
4But יהושע answered him, saying, “It has been written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of Elohim.’ ”# Deu. 8:3#See Mat. 4.4
5And the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the reigns of the world in a moment of time.
6And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I shall give You, and their esteem, for it has been delivered to me,#See 2Cor. 4:4; John 12:31; John 14:30; John 16:11; 1John 5:19 and I give it to whomever I wish.
7If, then, You worship before me, all shall be Yours.
8And יהושע answering him, said, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it has been written, ‘You shall worship יהוה your Elohim, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”# Deu. 6:13
9And he brought Him to Yerushalayim, set Him on the edge of the Set-apart Place, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of Elohim, throw Yourself down from here,
10for it has been written, ‘He shall command His messengers concerning You, to guard over You,’# Psa. 91:11
11and, ‘In their hands they shall bear You up, lest You dash Your foot against a stone.’ ”# Psa. 91:12
12And יהושע answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not try יהוה your Elohim.’ ”# Deu. 6:16
13And when the devil had ended every trial, he went away from Him until a convenient time.
14And יהושע returned in the power of the Spirit to Galil, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding country.
15And He was teaching in their congregations, being praised by all.
16And He came to Natsareth, where He had been brought up. And according to His practice, He went into the congregation on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17And the scroll of the prophet Yeshayahu was handed to Him. And having unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written:
18“The Spirit of יהוה is upon Me,#See Isa. 61:1-3 because He has anointed Me to bring the Good News to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send away crushed ones with a release,
19to proclaim the acceptable year of יהוה.”# Isa. 61:1, 2#See also Isa. 58:6
20And having rolled up the scroll, He gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the congregation were fixed upon Him.
21And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been filled in your hearing.”
22And all were bearing witness to Him, and marvelled at the pleasant words that came out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not the son of Yosĕph?”
23And He said to them, “No doubt, you shall say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard being done in Kephar Naḥum, do also here in Your country.’ ”
24And He said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.
25“But truly I say to you, many widows were in Yisra’ĕl in the days of Ěliyahu, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a great scarcity of food in all the land,
26and Ěliyahu was sent to none of them, but to Tsarephath of Tsiḏon, to a woman, a widow.
27“And many lepers were in Yisra’ĕl in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Na‛aman the Aramean.”
28And all those in the congregation, when they heard this, were filled with wrath.
29And rising up they drove Him out of the city, and brought Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down.
30But He, passing through the midst of them, went away.
31And He came down to Kephar Naḥum, a city of Galil, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
32And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
33And in the congregation was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice,
34saying, “Ha! What have we to do with You, יהושע of Natsareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know You, who You are, the Set-apart One of Elohim!”
35And יהושע rebuked him, saying, “Be silenced, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him without hurting him.
36And astonishment came on all, and they spoke to each other, saying, “What is this word, that with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out?”
37And the report about Him went out into every place of the neighbourhood.
38And rising up from the congregation He went into the house of Shim‛on. But the mother-in-law of Shim‛on was sick with a severe inflammation, and they asked Him concerning her.
39And standing over her He rebuked the inflammation, and it left her, and instantly rising up she served them.
40And when the sun was setting, all who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him. And He laid His hands on each one of them and healed them.
41And also demons were coming out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Messiah, the Son of Elohim!” And rebuking them, He did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Messiah.
42And when day came, He went out and proceeded to a lonely place, but the crowds were seeking Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them.
43And He said to them, “To the other cities I also have to bring the Good News: the reign of Elohim, because for this I have been sent.”
44And He was proclaiming in the congregations of Galil.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2where for forty days he was tempted#4:2 The Greek for tempted can also mean tested. by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’#4:4 Deut. 8:3”
5The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’#4:8 Deut. 6:13”
9The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10For it is written:
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’#4:11 Psalm 91:11,12”
12Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’#4:12 Deut. 6:16”
13When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” # 4:19
Isaiah 61:1,2 (see Septuagint); Isaiah 58:6
20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
22All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
23Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’ ”
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27And there were many in Israel with leprosy#4:27 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”
28All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit
31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.
33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34“Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
Jesus Heals Many
38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
