Iyoḇ (Job) 28
28
1“Indeed, there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined.
2Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore.
3An end to darkness he has set, and to every limit he is searching, to rocks in deepest darkness.
4He opens a shaft far away from people; they are forgotten by feet; they hang far away from men; they swing to and fro.
5Earth, out of which grows food, is turned underneath as by fire;
6its stones are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold.
7No bird of prey knows the path, nor has the hawk’s eye seen it.
8The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed over it.
9He puts his hand on the flint; he shall overturn the mountains at the roots.
10He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious gem.
11He dams up the sources of the rivers; and he brings to light what is hidden.
12And wisdom – where is it found? And where is the place of understanding?#See verse 28.
13Man does not know its value, and it is not found in the land of the living.
14The deep has said, ‘It is not in me,’ and the sea has said, ‘It is not with me.’
15Gold is not given for it, nor is silver weighed out as its price.
16It is not valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious shoham or sapphire.
17Gold or crystal are not to be compared with it, nor is it exchanged for a vessel of fine gold.
18No mention is made of coral or crystal, for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19The topaz of Kush is not to be compared with it, nor is it valued in clean gold.
20And wisdom – from where does it come? And where is the place of understanding?#See verse 28.
21It has been hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the heavens.
22Destruction and death have said, ‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’
23Elohim has understood its way, and He has known its place.
24For He looks to the ends of the earth, sees under all the heavens,
25making a weight for the wind, and measuring out the waters by measure.
26When He made a law for the rain, and a way for the lightning of thunder,
27then He saw wisdom and declared it; He prepared it and also searched it out.
28And He said to man, ‘See, the fear of יהוה, that is wisdom, and to turn from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 28
28
Where Can Wisdom be Found?
1“Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined.
2Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore.
3Man puts an end to darkness; he searches to the farthest reaches for ore in gloom and blackest darkness.
4He cuts open a shaft far from dwellings, in places forgotten by feet. Far from other people, they dangle back and forth.
5The earth, from which food comes, is transformed as by fire;
6a place whose rocks are sapphires, its dust contains gold.
7No bird of prey knows the path; nor falcon’s eye has seen it.
8Proud beasts have not set foot on it, and no lion has passed there.
9Man sets his hand against the flinty rock and overturns mountains by the roots.
10He carves out tunnels through the rocks; his eye sees every precious thing.
11He dams up streams from flowing. And brings hidden things to light.
12“But where can wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?
13No mortal comprehends its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living.
14The deep says, ‘It is not in me’— The sea says, ‘It’s not with me.’
15Pure gold cannot be given for it, nor can its price be weighed in silver.
16It cannot be weighed in gold from Ophir, in precious onyx, or sapphire.
17Neither gold or crystal can compare with it, nor vessels of fine gold exchanged for it.
18No mention will be made of coral or jasper; the price of wisdom is more than pearls.
19The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare to it; nor can it be valued in pure gold.
20Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?
21It has been hidden from the eyes of all living things, concealed from the birds of the sky.
22Abaddon and Death say, ‘With our ears we have heard a rumor of it.’
23“God understands its way and He knows its place.
24He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.
25When He made the force of the wind, and measured out the waters,
26when He set a limit for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm,
27then He looked at it and assessed it established it and examined it.
28And He said to mankind, ‘The fear of the Lord —that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.”’
