9
1And passing by, He saw a man, blind from birth.
2And His taught ones asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?”
3יהושע answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of Elohim might be made manifest in him.
4“It is necessary for Me to work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day – night is coming, when no one is able to work.
5“While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6Having said this, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and applied the clay to the eyes of the blind man.
7And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Shiloaḥ" (which means Sent). So he went and washed, and came seeing.
8Therefore the neighbours and those who saw him before, that he was blind, said, “Is not this he who was sitting and begging?”
9Others said, “This is he.” Others said, “He is like him.” He said, “I am.”
10So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
11He answered and said, “A Man called יהושע made clay and applied it to my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Shiloaḥ and wash.’ And I went and washed, and I received sight.”
12And they said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”
13They brought to the Pharisees the one who was once blind.
14Now it was a Sabbath when יהושע made the clay and opened his eyes.
15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from Elohim, because He does not guard the Sabbath.” Others said, “How is a man who is a sinner able to do such miracles?” And there was a division among them.
17So they said to the blind one again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
18However, the Yehuḏim did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, till they called the parents of him who had received his sight.
19And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
20His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind,
21but how he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age, ask him, he shall speak concerning himself.”
22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Yehuḏim, for the Yehuḏim had already agreed that if anyone confessed that He was Messiah, he should be put out of the congregation.
23Because of this his parents said, “He is of age, ask him.”
24So for the second time they called the man who was blind, and said to him, “Give esteem to Elohim, we know that this Man is a sinner.”
25Then he answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know. I only know that I was blind, now I see.”
26And they asked him once more, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
27He answered them, “I have told you already, and you did not hear. Why do you wish to hear it again? Do you wish to become His taught ones too?”
28Then they abused him and said, “You are His taught one, but we are taught ones of Mosheh.
29We know that Elohim has spoken to Mosheh, but this One, we do not know where He is from.
30The man answered and said to them, “Why, this is a wonder! You do not know where He is from, yet He opened my eyes!
31And we know that Elohim does not hear sinners. But if anyone fears Elohim and does His desire, He hears him.#See footnote at Pro. 28:9
32“From of old it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind.
33“If this One were not from Elohim, He could have done none at all.”
34They answered and said to him, “You were completely born in sins – and are you teaching us?” And they cast him out.
35יהושע heard that they had cast him out, and when He had found him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of Elohim?”
36He answered and said, “Who is He, Master, that I might believe in Him?”
37And יהושע said to him, “You have both seen Him and He who speaks with you is He.”
38And he said, “Master, I believe,” and bowed before Him.
39And יהושע said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those not seeing might see, and those seeing might become blind.”
40And those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, “Are we blind, too?”
41יהושע said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin, but now you say, ‘We see,’ therefore your sin remains.

A Man Born Blind Is Given Sight
1 And as he#*Here “as” is supplied as a component of the participle (“went away”) which is understood as temporal went away, he saw a man blind from birth. 2And his disciples asked him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?” 3Jesus replied, “Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but it happened#*The words “it happened” are not in the Greek text but are implied so that the works of God could be revealed in him. 4It is necessary for us to do the deeds of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work! 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6When he#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“had said”) which is understood as temporal had said these things, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes. 7And he said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated “sent”). So he went and washed and came back seeing.
8Then the neighbors and those who saw him previously (because he was a beggar) began to say,#*The imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive here (“began to say”) “Is this man not the one who used to sit and beg?” 9Others were saying, “It is this man”; others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” That one was saying, “I am he!” 10So they began to say#*The imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive here (“began to say”) to him, “How#Some manuscripts have “Then how” were your eyes opened?” 11He replied, “The man who is called Jesus made clay and smeared it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation on my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash!’ So I went, and I washed, and#*Here “and” is supplied because the two previous participles (“went” and “washed”) have been translated as finite verbs I received sight.” 12And they said to him, “Where is that man?” He said, “I do not know.”
The Reaction of the Pharisees to the Healing
13They brought him—the one formerly blind—to the Pharisees. 14(Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes was the Sabbath.) 15So the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received sight. And he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16So some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because he does not observe the Sabbath!” Others#Some manuscripts have “But others” were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
18So the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and received sight, until they summoned the parents of the one#Literally “of him” who received sight. 19And they asked them, saying, “Is this man your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20So his parents answered and said, “We know that this man is our son, and that he was born blind. 21But how he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him! He is a mature adult;#Literally “he has maturity” he will speak for himself!” 22(His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already decided that if anyone should confess him to be Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. 23Because of this his parents said, “He is a mature adult;#Literally “he has maturity” ask him.”)
24So they summoned the man who had been blind for the second time and said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner!” 25Then that man replied, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I know—that although I#*Here “although” is supplied as a component of the participle (“was”) which is understood as concessive was blind, now I see!” 26So they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27He replied to them, “I told you already and you did not listen! Why do you want to hear it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation again? You do not want to become his disciples also, do you?”#*The negative construction in Greek anticipates a negative answer here, indicated in the translation by the phrase “do you” 28They reviled#Some manuscripts have “And they reviled” him and said, “You are his disciple! But we are disciples of Moses! 29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.” 30The man answered and said to them, “For the remarkable thing is this, that you do not know where he is from, and he opened my eyes! 31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if someone is devout and does his will, he listens to this one. 32From time immemorial#Literally “the age” it has not been heard that someone opened the eyes of one born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything!” 34They answered and said to him, “You were born completely in sin, and are you attempting to teach#*Here the present tense is translated as a conative present (“attempting to teach”) us?” And they threw him out.
Jesus as the Son of Man
35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36He answered and said, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you.” 〚38And he said, “I believe, Lord!” and he worshiped him. 39And Jesus said,〛#A number of important manuscripts lack v. 38 and the first part of v. 39 (“and Jesus said”) “For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind!” 40Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, “We are not also blind, are we?”#*The negative construction in Greek anticipates a negative answer here, indicated in the translation by the phrase “are we” 41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin.
