Yoḥanan (John) 4
4
1So when the Master knew that the Pharisees had heard that יהושע made and immersed more taught ones than Yoḥanan –
2although יהושע Himself did not immerse, but His taught ones –
3He left Yehuḏah and went away again to Galil.
4And He had to pass through Shomeron.
5So He came to a city of Shomeron, called Sheḵem, near the piece of land Ya‛aqoḇ gave to his son Yosĕph.
6And Ya‛aqoḇ’s fountain was there. So יהושע, being wearied from the journey, was sitting thus at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.
7A woman of Shomeron came to draw water. יהושע said to her, “Give Me to drink.”
8For His taught ones had gone off into the city to buy food.
9The woman of Shomeron therefore said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Yehuḏi, ask a drink from me, a woman of Shomeron?” For Yehuḏim do not associate with Shomeronim.
10יהושע answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of Elohim, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me to drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”#See Jer. 2:13; Jer. 17:13; Zech. 14:8; John 7:37-39
11The woman said to Him, “Master, You have no vessel, and the well is deep. From where, then, do You have living water?
12Are You greater than our father Ya‛aqoḇ, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
13יהושע answered and said to her, “Everyone drinking of this water shall thirst again,
14but whoever drinks of the water I give him shall certainly never thirst. And the water that I give him shall become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
15The woman said to Him, “Master, give me this water, so that I do not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16יהושע said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” יהושע said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’
18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
19The woman said to Him, “Master, I see that You are a prophet.
20Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you people say that in Yerushalayim is the place where one needs to worship.”
21יהושע said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you shall neither on this mountain, nor in Yerushalayim, worship the Father.
22You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because the deliverance is of the Yehuḏim.#See Psa. 147:19; Isa. 2:3; Isa. 14:1; Isa. 56:6-8; Eze. 47:22, 23; Zech. 2:10, 11; Zech. 8:23; Rom. 2:20; Rom. 3:2; Rom. 9:4; Rev. 21:12; Rev. 21:24
23“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also does seek such to worship Him.
24“Elohim is Spirit, and those who worship Him need to worship in spirit and truth.”
25The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming, the One who is called Anointed. When that One comes, He shall announce to us all.”
26יהושע said to her, “I who am speaking to you am He.”
27And upon this His taught ones came, and they were marvelling that He was speaking with a woman, however, no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?”
28The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and said to the men,
29Come, see a Man who told me all that I have done. Is this not the Messiah?
30They went out of the city and were coming to Him.
31But in the meantime His taught ones were asking Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32And He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
33Then the taught ones said to each other, “Did anyone bring Him food to eat?”
34יהושע said to them, “My food is to do the desire of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.
35“Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and the harvest comes’? See, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, for they are white for harvest – already!
36“He who is reaping receives a reward, and gathers fruit for everlasting life, so that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping rejoice together.
37“For in this the word is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’
38“I sent you to reap that for which you have not laboured. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours.”
39And many of the Shomeronim of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who witnessed, “He told me all that I have done.”
40Therefore when the Shomeronim came to Him, they were asking Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days.
41And many more believed because of His word.
42And they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this is truly the Messiah, the Saviour of the world.”
43And after the two days He left there and went to Galil.
44For יהושע Himself witnessed that a prophet is without appreciation in his own country.
45Therefore when He came to Galil, the Galileans received Him, having seen all that He had done in Yerushalayim at the festival, for they also went to the festival.
46Then יהושע came again to Qanah of Galil where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Kephar Naḥum.
47When he heard that יהושע had come from Yehuḏah into Galil, he went to Him and was asking Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.
48יהושע then said to him, “If you people do not see signs and wonders, you do not believe at all.”
49The nobleman said to Him, “Master, come down before my child dies!”
50יהושע said to him, “Go, your son lives.” And the man believed the word that יהושע spoke to him, and went.
51And while he was going down, his servants met him and reported, saying, “Your son lives!”
52He then asked from them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the inflammation left him.”
53Then the father knew that it was at the same hour in which יהושע said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
54Again this was the second sign יהושע did, when He had come from Yehuḏah into Galil.

John 4
4
1When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John,
2(though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)
3he left Judea and went away again to Galilee,
4and it was behoving him to go through Samaria.
5He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;
6and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;
7there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, ‘Give me to drink;’
8for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;
9the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, ‘How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?’ for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.
10Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.’
11The woman saith to him, ‘Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?
12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?’
13Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again;
14but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst — to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.’
15The woman saith unto him, ‘Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.’
16Jesus saith to her, ‘Go, call thy husband, and come hither;’
17the woman answered and said, ‘I have not a husband.’ Jesus saith to her, ‘Well didst thou say — A husband I have not;
18for five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.’
19The woman saith to him, ‘Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet;
20our fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye — ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.’
21Jesus saith to her, ‘Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father;
22ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;
23but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;
24God [is] a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.’
25The woman saith to him, ‘I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;’
26Jesus saith to her, ‘I am [he], who am speaking to thee.’
27And upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, ‘What seekest thou?’ or ‘Why speakest thou with her?’
28The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men,
29‘Come, see a man, who told me all things — as many as I did; is this the Christ?’
30They went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him.
31And in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, ‘Rabbi, eat;’
32and he said to them, ‘I have food to eat that ye have not known.’
33The disciples then said one to another, ‘Did any one bring him anything to eat?’
34Jesus saith to them, ‘My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work;
35do not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already.
36‘And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together;
37for in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper.
38I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered.
39And from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, — ‘He told me all things — as many as I did.’
40When, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days;
41and many more did believe because of his word,
42and said to the woman — ‘No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world — the Christ.’
43And after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee,
44for Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour;
45when then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast — for they also went to the feast.
46Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum,
47he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die.
48Jesus then said unto him, ‘If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.’
49The courtier saith unto him, ‘Sir, come down before my child die;’
50Jesus saith to him, ‘Be going on; thy son doth live.’ And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on,
51and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying — ‘Thy child doth live;’
52he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him — ‘Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;’
53then the father knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him — ‘Thy son doth live,’ and he himself believed, and his whole house;
54this again a second sign did Jesus, having come out of Judea to Galilee.
