Yoḥanan (John) 4
4
1So when the Master knew that the Pharisees had heard that יהושע made and immersed more taught ones than Yoḥanan –
2although יהושע Himself did not immerse, but His taught ones –
3He left Yehuḏah and went away again to Galil.
4And He had to pass through Shomeron.
5So He came to a city of Shomeron, called Sheḵem, near the piece of land Ya‛aqoḇ gave to his son Yosĕph.
6And Ya‛aqoḇ’s fountain was there. So יהושע, being wearied from the journey, was sitting thus at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.
7A woman of Shomeron came to draw water. יהושע said to her, “Give Me to drink.”
8For His taught ones had gone off into the city to buy food.
9The woman of Shomeron therefore said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Yehuḏi, ask a drink from me, a woman of Shomeron?” For Yehuḏim do not associate with Shomeronim.
10יהושע answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of Elohim, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me to drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”#See Jer. 2:13; Jer. 17:13; Zech. 14:8; John 7:37-39
11The woman said to Him, “Master, You have no vessel, and the well is deep. From where, then, do You have living water?
12Are You greater than our father Ya‛aqoḇ, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
13יהושע answered and said to her, “Everyone drinking of this water shall thirst again,
14but whoever drinks of the water I give him shall certainly never thirst. And the water that I give him shall become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
15The woman said to Him, “Master, give me this water, so that I do not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16יהושע said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” יהושע said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’
18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
19The woman said to Him, “Master, I see that You are a prophet.
20Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you people say that in Yerushalayim is the place where one needs to worship.”
21יהושע said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you shall neither on this mountain, nor in Yerushalayim, worship the Father.
22You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because the deliverance is of the Yehuḏim.#See Psa. 147:19; Isa. 2:3; Isa. 14:1; Isa. 56:6-8; Eze. 47:22, 23; Zech. 2:10, 11; Zech. 8:23; Rom. 2:20; Rom. 3:2; Rom. 9:4; Rev. 21:12; Rev. 21:24
23“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also does seek such to worship Him.
24“Elohim is Spirit, and those who worship Him need to worship in spirit and truth.”
25The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming, the One who is called Anointed. When that One comes, He shall announce to us all.”
26יהושע said to her, “I who am speaking to you am He.”
27And upon this His taught ones came, and they were marvelling that He was speaking with a woman, however, no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?”
28The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and said to the men,
29Come, see a Man who told me all that I have done. Is this not the Messiah?
30They went out of the city and were coming to Him.
31But in the meantime His taught ones were asking Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32And He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
33Then the taught ones said to each other, “Did anyone bring Him food to eat?”
34יהושע said to them, “My food is to do the desire of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.
35“Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and the harvest comes’? See, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, for they are white for harvest – already!
36“He who is reaping receives a reward, and gathers fruit for everlasting life, so that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping rejoice together.
37“For in this the word is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’
38“I sent you to reap that for which you have not laboured. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours.”
39And many of the Shomeronim of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who witnessed, “He told me all that I have done.”
40Therefore when the Shomeronim came to Him, they were asking Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days.
41And many more believed because of His word.
42And they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this is truly the Messiah, the Saviour of the world.”
43And after the two days He left there and went to Galil.
44For יהושע Himself witnessed that a prophet is without appreciation in his own country.
45Therefore when He came to Galil, the Galileans received Him, having seen all that He had done in Yerushalayim at the festival, for they also went to the festival.
46Then יהושע came again to Qanah of Galil where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Kephar Naḥum.
47When he heard that יהושע had come from Yehuḏah into Galil, he went to Him and was asking Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.
48יהושע then said to him, “If you people do not see signs and wonders, you do not believe at all.”
49The nobleman said to Him, “Master, come down before my child dies!”
50יהושע said to him, “Go, your son lives.” And the man believed the word that יהושע spoke to him, and went.
51And while he was going down, his servants met him and reported, saying, “Your son lives!”
52He then asked from them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the inflammation left him.”
53Then the father knew that it was at the same hour in which יהושע said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
54Again this was the second sign יהושע did, when He had come from Yehuḏah into Galil.

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
1The Pharisees heard that Jesus was winning and baptizing more disciples than John. 2(Actually, Jesus himself did not baptize anyone; only his disciples did.) 3So when Jesus heard what was being said, he left Judea and went back to Galilee; 4on his way there he had to go through Samaria.

Gen 33.19; Josh 24.32 In Samaria he came to a town named Sychar, which was not far from the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7A Samaritan woman came to draw some water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink of water.” 8(His disciples had gone into town to buy food.)

Ezra 4.1–5; Neh 4.1–2 The woman answered, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan — so how can you ask me for a drink?” (Jews will not use the same cups and bowls that Samaritans use.)#4.9 Jews will not use the same cups and bowls that Samaritans use; or Jews will have nothing to do with Samaritans.
10Jesus answered, “If only you knew what God gives and who it is that is asking you for a drink, you would ask him, and he would give you life-giving water.”
11“Sir,” the woman said, “you haven't got a bucket, and the well is deep. Where would you get that life-giving water? 12It was our ancestor Jacob who gave us this well; he and his sons and his flocks all drank from it. You don't claim to be greater than Jacob, do you?”
13Jesus answered, “All those who drink this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring which will provide him with life-giving water and give him eternal life.”
15“Sir,” the woman said, “give me that water! Then I will never be thirsty again, nor will I have to come here to draw water.”
16 “Go and call your husband,” Jesus told her, “and come back.”
17“I haven't got a husband,” she answered.
Jesus replied, “You are right when you say you haven't got a husband. 18You have been married to five men, and the man you live with now is not really your husband. You have told me the truth.”
19“I see you are a prophet, sir,” the woman said. 20“My Samaritan ancestors worshipped God on this mountain, but you Jews say that Jerusalem is the place where we should worship God.”
21Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the time will come when people will not worship the Father either on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans do not really know whom you worship; but we Jews know whom we worship, because it is from the Jews that salvation comes. 23But the time is coming and is already here, when by the power of God's Spirit people will worship the Father as he really is, offering him the true worship that he wants. 24God is Spirit, and only by the power of his Spirit can people worship him as he really is.”
25The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah will come, and when he comes, he will tell us everything.”
26Jesus answered, “I am he, I who am talking with you.”
27At that moment Jesus' disciples returned, and they were greatly surprised to find him talking with a woman. But none of them said to her, “What do you want?” or asked him, “Why are you talking with her?”
28Then the woman left her water jar, went back to the town, and said to the people there, 29“Come and see the man who told me everything I have ever done. Could he be the Messiah?” 30So they left the town and went to Jesus.
31In the meantime the disciples were begging Jesus, “Teacher, have something to eat!”
32But he answered, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
33So the disciples started asking among themselves, “Could somebody have brought him food?”
34 “My food,” Jesus said to them, “is to obey the will of the one who sent me and to finish the work he gave me to do. 35You have a saying, ‘Four more months and then the harvest.’ But I tell you, take a good look at the fields; the crops are now ripe and ready to be harvested! 36The one who reaps the harvest is being paid and gathers the crops for eternal life; so another who sows and the one who reaps will be glad together. 37The saying is true, ‘One sows, another reaps.’ 38I have sent you to reap a harvest in a field where you did not work; others worked there, and you profit from their work.”
39Many of the Samaritans in that town believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I have ever done.” 40So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them, and Jesus stayed there two days.
41Many more believed because of his message, 42and they said to the woman, “We believe now, not because of what you said, but because we ourselves have heard him, and we know that he really is the Saviour of the world.”
Jesus Heals an Official's Son
43After spending two days there, Jesus left and went to Galilee. 44#Mt 13.57; Mk 6.4; Lk 4.24For he himself had said, “A prophet is not respected in his own country.” 45#Jn 2.23When he arrived in Galilee, the people there welcomed him, because they had gone to the Passover Festival in Jerusalem and had seen everything that he had done during the festival.

Jn 2.1–11
Then Jesus went back to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. A government official was there whose son was ill in Capernaum. 47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to go to Capernaum and heal his son, who was about to die. 48Jesus said to him, “None of you will ever believe unless you see miracles and wonders.”
49“Sir,” replied the official, “come with me before my child dies.”
50Jesus said to him, “Go, your son will live!”
The man believed Jesus' words and went. 51On his way home his servants met him with the news, “Your boy is going to live!”
52He asked them what time it was when his son got better, and they answered, “It was one o'clock yesterday afternoon when the fever left him.” 53Then the father remembered it was at that very hour that Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” So he and all his family believed.
54This was the second miracle that Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
