Yoḥanan (John) 4
4
1So when the Master knew that the Pharisees had heard that יהושע made and immersed more taught ones than Yoḥanan –
2although יהושע Himself did not immerse, but His taught ones –
3He left Yehuḏah and went away again to Galil.
4And He had to pass through Shomeron.
5So He came to a city of Shomeron, called Sheḵem, near the piece of land Ya‛aqoḇ gave to his son Yosĕph.
6And Ya‛aqoḇ’s fountain was there. So יהושע, being wearied from the journey, was sitting thus at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.
7A woman of Shomeron came to draw water. יהושע said to her, “Give Me to drink.”
8For His taught ones had gone off into the city to buy food.
9The woman of Shomeron therefore said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Yehuḏi, ask a drink from me, a woman of Shomeron?” For Yehuḏim do not associate with Shomeronim.
10יהושע answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of Elohim, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me to drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”#See Jer. 2:13; Jer. 17:13; Zech. 14:8; John 7:37-39
11The woman said to Him, “Master, You have no vessel, and the well is deep. From where, then, do You have living water?
12Are You greater than our father Ya‛aqoḇ, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
13יהושע answered and said to her, “Everyone drinking of this water shall thirst again,
14but whoever drinks of the water I give him shall certainly never thirst. And the water that I give him shall become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
15The woman said to Him, “Master, give me this water, so that I do not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16יהושע said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” יהושע said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’
18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
19The woman said to Him, “Master, I see that You are a prophet.
20Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you people say that in Yerushalayim is the place where one needs to worship.”
21יהושע said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you shall neither on this mountain, nor in Yerushalayim, worship the Father.
22You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because the deliverance is of the Yehuḏim.#See Psa. 147:19; Isa. 2:3; Isa. 14:1; Isa. 56:6-8; Eze. 47:22, 23; Zech. 2:10, 11; Zech. 8:23; Rom. 2:20; Rom. 3:2; Rom. 9:4; Rev. 21:12; Rev. 21:24
23“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also does seek such to worship Him.
24“Elohim is Spirit, and those who worship Him need to worship in spirit and truth.”
25The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming, the One who is called Anointed. When that One comes, He shall announce to us all.”
26יהושע said to her, “I who am speaking to you am He.”
27And upon this His taught ones came, and they were marvelling that He was speaking with a woman, however, no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?”
28The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and said to the men,
29Come, see a Man who told me all that I have done. Is this not the Messiah?
30They went out of the city and were coming to Him.
31But in the meantime His taught ones were asking Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32And He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
33Then the taught ones said to each other, “Did anyone bring Him food to eat?”
34יהושע said to them, “My food is to do the desire of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.
35“Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and the harvest comes’? See, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, for they are white for harvest – already!
36“He who is reaping receives a reward, and gathers fruit for everlasting life, so that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping rejoice together.
37“For in this the word is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’
38“I sent you to reap that for which you have not laboured. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours.”
39And many of the Shomeronim of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who witnessed, “He told me all that I have done.”
40Therefore when the Shomeronim came to Him, they were asking Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days.
41And many more believed because of His word.
42And they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this is truly the Messiah, the Saviour of the world.”
43And after the two days He left there and went to Galil.
44For יהושע Himself witnessed that a prophet is without appreciation in his own country.
45Therefore when He came to Galil, the Galileans received Him, having seen all that He had done in Yerushalayim at the festival, for they also went to the festival.
46Then יהושע came again to Qanah of Galil where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Kephar Naḥum.
47When he heard that יהושע had come from Yehuḏah into Galil, he went to Him and was asking Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.
48יהושע then said to him, “If you people do not see signs and wonders, you do not believe at all.”
49The nobleman said to Him, “Master, come down before my child dies!”
50יהושע said to him, “Go, your son lives.” And the man believed the word that יהושע spoke to him, and went.
51And while he was going down, his servants met him and reported, saying, “Your son lives!”
52He then asked from them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the inflammation left him.”
53Then the father knew that it was at the same hour in which יהושע said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
54Again this was the second sign יהושע did, when He had come from Yehuḏah into Galil.

John 4
4
1Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more followers than John was. 2But Jesus' disciples were really the ones doing the baptizing, and not Jesus himself.
Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
3Jesus left Judea and started for Galilee again. 4This time he had to go through Samaria, 5#Gn 33.19; Js 24.32. and on his way he came to the town of Sychar. It was near the field that Jacob had long ago given to his son Joseph. 6-8The well that Jacob had dug was still there, and Jesus sat down beside it because he was tired from traveling. It was noon, and after Jesus' disciples had gone into town to buy some food, a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well.
Jesus asked her, “Would you please give me a drink of water?”

Ezra 4.1-5; Ne 4.1,2. “You are a Jew,” she replied, “and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink of water when Jews and Samaritans won't have anything to do with each other?”#4.9 won't have anything to do with each other: Or “won't use the same cups.” The Samaritans lived in the land between Judea and Galilee. They worshiped God differently from the Jews and did not get along with them.
10Jesus answered, “You don't know what God wants to give you, and you don't know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would ask me for the water that gives life.”
11“Sir,” the woman said, “you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this life-giving water? 12Our ancestor Jacob dug this well for us, and his family and animals got water from it. Are you greater than Jacob?”
13Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again. 14But no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again. The water I give will become in that person a flowing fountain that gives eternal life.”
15The woman replied, “Sir, please give me a drink of that water! Then I won't get thirsty and have to come to this well again.”
16Jesus told her, “Go and bring your husband.”
17-18The woman answered, “I don't have a husband.”
“That's right,” Jesus replied, “you're telling the truth. You don't have a husband. You have already been married five times, and the man you are now living with isn't your husband.”
19The woman said, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. 20My ancestors worshiped on this mountain,#4.20 this mountain: Mount Gerizim, near the city of Shechem. but you Jews say Jerusalem is the only place to worship.”
21Jesus said to her:
Believe me, the time is coming when you won't worship the Father either on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans don't really know the one you worship. But we Jews do know the God we worship, and by using us, God will save the world. 23But a time is coming, and it is already here! Even now the true worshipers are being led by the Spirit to worship the Father according to the truth. These are the ones the Father is seeking to worship him. 24God is Spirit, and those who worship God must be led by the Spirit to worship him according to the truth.
25The woman said, “I know that the Messiah will come. He is the one we call Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26“I am that one,” Jesus told her, “and I am speaking to you now.”
27The disciples returned about this time and were surprised to find Jesus talking with a woman. But none of them asked him what he wanted or why he was talking with her.
28The woman left her water jar and ran back into town, where she said to the people, 29“Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! Could he be the Messiah?” 30Everyone in town went out to see Jesus.
31While this was happening, Jesus' disciples were saying to him, “Teacher, please eat something.”
32But Jesus told them, “I have food you don't know anything about.”
33His disciples started asking each other, “Has someone brought him something to eat?”
34Jesus said:
My food is to do what God wants! He is the one who sent me, and I must finish the work that he gave me to do. 35You may say there are still four months until harvest time. But I tell you to look, and you will see that the fields are ripe and ready to harvest.
36Even now the harvest workers are receiving their reward by gathering a harvest that brings eternal life. Then everyone who planted the seed and everyone who harvests the crop will celebrate together. 37So the saying proves true, “Some plant the seed, and others harvest the crop.” 38I am sending you to harvest crops in fields where others have done all the hard work.
39A lot of Samaritans in that town put their faith in Jesus because the woman had said, “This man told me everything I have ever done.” 40They came and asked him to stay in their town, and he stayed on for two days.
41Many more Samaritans put their faith in Jesus because of what they heard him say. 42They told the woman, “We no longer have faith in Jesus just because of what you told us. We have heard him ourselves, and we are certain that he is the Savior of the world!”
Jesus Heals an Official's Son
(Matthew 8.5-13; Luke 7.1-10)
43-44 #
Mt 13.57; Mk 6.4; Lk 4.24. Jesus had said, “Prophets are honored everywhere, except in their own country.” Then two days later he left 45#Jn 2.23. and went to Galilee. The people there welcomed him, because they had gone to the festival in Jerusalem and had seen everything he had done.
46 #
Jn 2.1-11. While Jesus was in Galilee, he returned to the village of Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was an official in Capernaum whose son was sick. 47And when the man heard that Jesus had come from Judea, he went and begged him to keep his son from dying.
48Jesus told the official, “You won't have faith unless you see miracles and wonders!”
49The man replied, “Lord, please come before my son dies!”
50Jesus then said, “Your son will live. Go on home to him.” The man believed Jesus and started back home.
51Some of the official's servants met him along the road and told him, “Your son is better!” 52He asked them when the boy got better, and they answered, “The fever left him yesterday at one o'clock.”
53The boy's father realized that at one o'clock the day before, Jesus had told him, “Your son will live!” So the man and everyone in his family put their faith in Jesus.
54This was the second miracle#4.54 miracle: See the note at 2.11. that Jesus worked after he left Judea and went to Galilee.
