Yoḥanan (John) 2
2
1And on the third day there was a wedding in Qanah of Galil, and the mother of יהושע was there.
2And both יהושע and His taught ones were invited to the wedding.
3And when they were short of wine, the mother of יהושע said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4יהושע said to her, “Woman, what is that to Me and to you? My hour has not yet come.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He says to you.”
6And there were six stone water-jugs standing there, according to the mode of cleansing of the Yehuḏim, each holding two or three measures.
7יהושע said to them, “Fill the water-jugs with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
8And He said to them, “Now draw out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.
9But when the master of the feast had tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from – though the servants who had drawn the water knew – the master of the feast called the bridegroom,
10and said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when they have drunk, then that which is poorer. You have kept the good wine until now.”
11This, the beginning of the signs, יהושע did in Qanah of Galil, and manifested His esteem. And His taught ones believed in Him.
12After this He went down to Kephar Naḥum, He and His mother, and His brothers, and His taught ones. And there they stayed not many days.
13And the Pĕsaḥ of the Yehuḏim was near, and יהושע went up to Yerushalayim.
14And He found in the Set-apart Place those selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the moneychangers sitting.
15And having made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the Set-apart Place, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the moneychangers’ coins and overturned the tables.
16And He said to those selling doves, “Take these away! Do not make the house of My Father a house of merchandise!”
17And His taught ones remembered that it was written, “The ardour for Your house has eaten Me up.”# Psa. 69:9
18And the Yehuḏim answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You are doing these?”
19יהושע answered and said to them, “Destroy this Dwelling Place, and in three days I shall raise it.”
20Then the Yehuḏim said, “It took forty-six years to build this Dwelling Place, and You are going to raise it in three days?”
21But He spoke about the Dwelling Place of His body.
22So, when He was raised from the dead, His taught ones remembered that He said this to them. And they believed the Scripture and the word which יהושע had said.
23And when He was in Yerushalayim at the Pĕsaḥ, at the festival, many believed in His Name when they saw the signs which He was doing.
24But יהושע was not entrusting Himself to them, because He knew all men,
25and had no need that anyone should witness of man, for He knew what was in man.

John 2

From Water to Wine
1-3Three days later there was a wedding in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there. Jesus and his disciples were guests also. When they started running low on wine at the wedding banquet, Jesus’ mother told him, “They’re just about out of wine.”
4Jesus said, “Is that any of our business, Mother—yours or mine? This isn’t my time. Don’t push me.”
5She went ahead anyway, telling the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.”
6-7Six stoneware water pots were there, used by the Jews for ritual washings. Each held twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus ordered the servants, “Fill the pots with water.” And they filled them to the brim.
8“Now fill your pitchers and take them to the host,” Jesus said, and they did.
9-10When the host tasted the water that had become wine (he didn’t know what had just happened but the servants, of course, knew), he called out to the bridegroom, “Everybody I know begins with their finest wines and after the guests have had their fill brings in the cheap stuff. But you’ve saved the best till now!”
11This act in Cana of Galilee was the first sign Jesus gave, the first glimpse of his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
12After this he went down to Capernaum along with his mother, brothers, and disciples, and stayed several days.
Tear Down This Temple . . .
13-14When the Passover Feast, celebrated each spring by the Jews, was about to take place, Jesus traveled up to Jerusalem. He found the Temple teeming with people selling cattle and sheep and doves. The loan sharks were also there in full strength.
15-17Jesus put together a whip out of strips of leather and chased them out of the Temple, stampeding the sheep and cattle, upending the tables of the loan sharks, spilling coins left and right. He told the dove merchants, “Get your things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a shopping mall!” That’s when his disciples remembered the Scripture, “Zeal for your house consumes me.”
18-19But the Jews were upset. They asked, “What credentials can you present to justify this?” Jesus answered, “Tear down this Temple and in three days I’ll put it back together.”
20-22They were indignant: “It took forty-six years to build this Temple, and you’re going to rebuild it in three days?” But Jesus was talking about his body as the Temple. Later, after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this. They then put two and two together and believed both what was written in Scripture and what Jesus had said.
23-25During the time he was in Jerusalem, those days of the Passover Feast, many people noticed the signs he was displaying and, seeing they pointed straight to God, entrusted their lives to him. But Jesus didn’t entrust his life to them. He knew them inside and out, knew how untrustworthy they were. He didn’t need any help in seeing right through them.
