Yoḥanan (John) 12
12
1Accordingly יהושע, six days before the Pĕsaḥ, came to Bĕyth Anyah, where El‛azar was, who had died, whom He raised from the dead.
2So they made Him a supper there, and Martha served, while El‛azar was one of those who sat at the table with Him.
3Then Miryam took a pound of costly perfume of nard, anointed the feet of יהושע, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4Then one of His taught ones, Yehuḏah from Qerioth, son of Shim‛on, who was about to deliver Him up, said,
5Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?
6And he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and he used to take what was put in it.
7יהושע then said, “Let her alone, she has kept this for the day of My burial.
8For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.
9Then a great crowd of the Yehuḏim learned that He was there. And they came, not on account of יהושע only, but also to see El‛azar, whom He had raised from the dead.
10And the chief priests resolved to kill El‛azar as well,
11because on account of him many of the Yehuḏim went away and believed in יהושע.
12On the next day a great crowd who had come to the festival, when they heard that יהושע was coming to Yerushalayim,
13took the branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and were crying out, “Hoshia-na!# Psa. 118:25 Blessed is He who is coming in the Name of יהוה,# Psa. 118:26#See Mat. 23:39; and Psa. 118:26 the Sovereign of Yisra’ĕl!”
14And יהושע, having found a young donkey, sat on it, as it has been written:
15“Do not fear, daughter of Tsiyon, see, your Sovereign is coming, sitting on the colt of a donkey.”# Zech. 9:9
16At first His taught ones did not understand this. But when יהושע was esteemed, then they remembered that this was written about Him and that they had done this to Him.
17Therefore the crowd, who were with Him when He called El‛azar out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, were bearing witness.
18On account of this the crowd also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
19The Pharisees then said among themselves, “You see how you are getting nowhere at all. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
20And there were certain Greeks among those coming up to worship at the festival.
21These then came to Philip, who was from Bĕyth Tsaiḏa of Galil, and were asking him, saying, “Master, we wish to see יהושע.”
22Philip came and told Andri, and in turn Andri and Philip told יהושע.
23And יהושע answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Aḏam to be esteemed.
24“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
25“He who loves his life shall lose it, and he who hates his life in this world shall preserve it for everlasting life.
26“If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me. And where I am, there My servant also shall be. If anyone serves Me, the Father shall value him.
27“Now I Myself am troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this reason I came to this hour.
28Father, esteem Your Name. Then a voice came from the heaven, “I have both esteemed it and shall esteem it again.”
29So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying there had been thunder. Others said, “A messenger has spoken to Him.”
30יהושע answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.
31Now is the judgment of this world, now the ruler of this world#See Luke 4:6 shall be cast out.
32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, shall draw all men unto Myself.”
33This He said, signifying by what death He was about to die.
34The crowd answered Him, “We have heard out of the Torah that the Messiah remains forever. And how do You say, ‘The Son of Aḏam has to be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Aḏam?”
35יהושע, therefore, said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. And he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.
36While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you become sons of light. These words יהושע spoke, and went off and was hidden from them.
37But though He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him,
38that the word of Yeshayahu the prophet might be filled, which he spoke, “יהוה, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of יהוה been revealed?”# Isa. 53:1
39Because of this they were unable to believe, because again Yeshayahu said:
40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they should not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn, and I should heal them.”# Isa. 6:10#See Mat. 13:15
41Yeshayahu said this when he saw His esteem and spoke of Him.
42Still, even among the rulers many did believe in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the congregation,
43for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of Elohim.
44Then יהושע cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.
45“And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.
46“I have come as a light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me should stay in darkness.
47“And if anyone hears My Words but does not watch over them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
48He who rejects Me, and does not receive My Words, has one who judges him: the Word that I have spoken shall judge him in the last day.#See also John 3:18, 19; John 7:16
49“Because I spoke not from Myself, but the Father who sent Me has given Me a command,#See John 7:16 what I should say and what I should speak.
50“And I know that His command is everlasting life.#See Mat. 19:17: John 3:36 Therefore, whatever I speak, as the Father has said to Me, so I speak.”

John 12
12
Anointing His Feet
1-3Six days before Passover, Jesus entered Bethany where Lazarus, so recently raised from the dead, was living. Lazarus and his sisters invited Jesus to dinner at their home. Martha served. Lazarus was one of those sitting at the table with them. Mary came in with a jar of very expensive aromatic oils, anointed and massaged Jesus’ feet, and then wiped them with her hair. The fragrance of the oils filled the house.
4-6Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, even then getting ready to betray him, said, “Why wasn’t this oil sold and the money given to the poor? It would have easily brought three hundred silver pieces.” He said this not because he cared two cents about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of their common funds, but also embezzled them.
7-8Jesus said, “Let her alone. She’s anticipating and honoring the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you. You don’t always have me.”
9-11Word got out among the Jews that he was back in town. The people came to take a look, not only at Jesus but also at Lazarus, who had been raised from the dead. So the high priests plotted to kill Lazarus because so many of the Jews were going over and believing in Jesus on account of him.
See How Your King Comes
12-15The next day the huge crowd that had arrived for the Feast heard that Jesus was entering Jerusalem. They broke off palm branches and went out to meet him. And they cheered:
Hosanna!
Blessed is he who comes in God’s name!
Yes! The King of Israel!
Jesus got a young donkey and rode it, just as the Scripture has it:
No fear, Daughter Zion:
See how your king comes,
riding a donkey’s colt.
16The disciples didn’t notice the fulfillment of many Scriptures at the time, but after Jesus was glorified, they remembered that what was written about him matched what was done to him.
17-19The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, was there giving eyewitness accounts. It was because they had spread the word of this latest God-sign that the crowd swelled to a welcoming parade. The Pharisees took one look and threw up their hands: “It’s out of control. The world’s in a stampede after him.”
A Grain of Wheat Must Die
20-21There were some Greeks in town who had come up to worship at the Feast. They approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee: “Sir, we want to see Jesus. Can you help us?”
22-23Philip went and told Andrew. Andrew and Philip together told Jesus. Jesus answered, “Time’s up. The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24-25“Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal.
26“If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me. Then you’ll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment’s notice. The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me.
27-28“Right now I am shaken. And what am I going to say? ‘Father, get me out of this’? No, this is why I came in the first place. I’ll say, ‘Father, put your glory on display.’”
A voice came out of the sky: “I have glorified it, and I’ll glorify it again.”
29The listening crowd said, “Thunder!”
Others said, “An angel spoke to him!”
30-33Jesus said, “The voice didn’t come for me but for you. At this moment the world is in crisis. Now Satan, the ruler of this world, will be thrown out. And I, as I am lifted up from the earth, will attract everyone to me and gather them around me.” He put it this way to show how he was going to be put to death.
34Voices from the crowd answered, “We heard from God’s Law that the Messiah lasts forever. How can it be necessary, as you put it, that the Son of Man ‘be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35-36a Jesus said, “For a brief time still, the light is among you. Walk by the light you have so darkness doesn’t destroy you. If you walk in darkness, you don’t know where you’re going. As you have the light, believe in the light. Then the light will be within you, and shining through your lives. You’ll be children of light.”
Their Eyes Are Blinded
36b-40 Jesus said all this, and then went into hiding. All these God-signs he had given them and they still didn’t get it, still wouldn’t trust him. This proved that the prophet Isaiah was right:
God, who believed what we preached?
Who recognized God’s arm, outstretched and ready to act?
First they wouldn’t believe, then they couldn’t—again, just as Isaiah said:
Their eyes are blinded,
their hearts are hardened,
So that they wouldn’t see with their eyes
and perceive with their hearts,
And turn to me, God,
so I could heal them.
41Isaiah said these things after he got a glimpse of God’s overflowing glory that would pour through the Messiah.
42-43On the other hand, a considerable number from the ranks of the leaders did believe. But because of the Pharisees, they didn’t come out in the open with it. They were afraid of getting kicked out of the meeting place. When push came to shove they cared more for human approval than for God’s glory.
44-46Jesus summed it all up when he cried out, “Whoever believes in me, believes not just in me but in the One who sent me. Whoever looks at me is looking, in fact, at the One who sent me. I am Light that has come into the world so that all who believe in me won’t have to stay any longer in the dark.
47-50“If anyone hears what I am saying and doesn’t take it seriously, I don’t reject him. I didn’t come to reject the world; I came to save the world. But you need to know that whoever puts me off, refusing to take in what I’m saying, is willfully choosing rejection. The Word, the Word-made-flesh that I have spoken and that I am, that Word and no other is the last word. I’m not making any of this up on my own. The Father who sent me gave me orders, told me what to say and how to say it. And I know exactly what his command produces: real and eternal life. That’s all I have to say. What the Father told me, I tell you.”
