Amos 9
9
1I saw יהוה standing by the slaughter-place, and He said, “Strike the column head, so that the thresholds shake, and break them off by the head, all of them. And the last of them I kill with the sword. Not one of them fleeing gets away, and not one fugitive of them escapes.
2“If they dig into She’ol, from there my hand does take them; and if they climb up to the heavens, from there I bring them down.
3“And if they hide themselves on top of Karmel, from there I shall search, and take them. And if they hide from before My eyes at the bottom of the sea, from there I shall command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
4“And if they go into captivity before their enemies, from there I shall command the sword, and it shall kill them. And I shall set My eyes on them for evil and not for good.”
5And the Master יהוה of hosts is He who touches the earth so that it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn, and all of it come up like the River, and subside like the River of Mitsrayim –
6who is building His upper room in the heavens, and has founded His firmament on the earth, who is calling for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earth – יהוה is His Name.
7“Are you not like the people of Kush to Me, O children of Yisra’ĕl?” declares יהוה. “Did I not bring up Yisra’ĕl from the land of Mitsrayim, and the Philistines from Kaphtor, and Aram from Qir?
8“Look, the eyes of the Master יהוה are on the sinful reign,#See Isa. 34:2; Jer. 30:11; Jer. 46:28; Dan. 2:44; Zeph. 3:8; Hagg. 2:22; Luke 4:5, 6 and I shall destroy it from the face of the earth, except that, I do not completely destroy the house of Ya‛aqoḇ,” declares יהוה.
9“For look, I am commanding, and I shall sift#Or shake – shakes. the house of Yisra’ĕl among all the nations, as one sifts#Or shake – shakes. with a sieve, yet not a grain falls to the ground.
10“All the sinners of My people are going to die by the sword, those who are saying, ‘Evil does not overtake us nor meet us.’
11“In that day I shall raise up the Booth of Dawiḏ which has fallen down. And I shall repair its breaches and raise up its ruins. And I shall build it as in the days of old,
12so that they possess the remnant of Eḏom,#The vowels which the Massoretes added later on makes this read Eḏom, but it was probably a mistake. It should be Aḏam, meaning mankind. and all the nations on whom My Name is called,”#See Acts 15:16, 17 declares יהוה who does this.
13“Look, the days are coming,” declares יהוה, “that the ploughman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him who sows seed. And the mountains shall drip new wine, and all the hills melt.
14“And I shall turn back the captivity of My people Yisra’ĕl. And they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them. And they shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them, and shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
15“And I shall plant them on their own soil, and not uproot them any more from their own soil I have given them,” said יהוה your Elohim!

The Destruction of Israel
1I saw the Lord standing beside#9:1 Or on the altar, and he said:
#
Zeph. 2:14 “Strike the capitals until #Zeph. 2:14 the thresholds #[Isa. 6:4] shake,
# See Judg. 16:26-30 and shatter them on the heads of all the people;#9:1 Hebrew all of them
and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
# [ch. 2:14] not one of them shall flee away;
not one of them shall escape.
2 # [Ps. 139:8-10] “If they dig into Sheol,
from there shall my hand take them;
# [Ps. 139:8-10] if they climb up to heaven,
from there I will bring them down.
3If they hide themselves on #ch. 1:2 the top of Carmel,
from there I will search them out and take them;
# [Job 26:5] and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea,
there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
4 # [Deut. 28:65] And if they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
# See Jer. 21:10 and I will fix my eyes upon them
for evil and not for good.”
5The Lord God of hosts,
he who touches the earth and #Ps. 46:6 it melts,
and all who dwell in it mourn,
# ch. 8:8 and all of it rises like the Nile,
# ch. 8:8 and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;
6 # [Ps. 104:3, 5] who builds his upper chambers in the heavens
and founds his vault upon the earth;
# See ch. 5:8 who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out upon the surface of the earth—
# See ch. 4:13 the Lord is his name.
7“Are you not like #[Zeph. 3:10] the Cushites to me,
O people of Israel?” declares the Lord.
#
Ex. 20:2 “Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt,
and #Jer. 47:4 the Philistines from #Gen. 10:14 Caphtor and the Syrians from #ch. 1:5Kir?
8Behold, #[ver. 4] the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,
and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground,
#
Jer. 30:11; [Obad. 17] except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.
9“For behold, I will command,
# [Jer. 15:7; Matt. 3:12; Luke 3:17] and shake the house of Israel among all the nations
as one shakes with a sieve,
but no pebble shall fall to the earth.
10All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,
who say, #[ch. 6:3]‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.’
The Restoration of Israel
11“In that day #Cited Acts 15:16I will raise up
the booth of David that is fallen
and repair its breaches,
and raise up its ruins
and rebuild it as in the days of old,
12 # [Obad. 19] that they may possess the remnant of Edom
and #Cited Acts 15:17, 18all the nations who are called by my name,”#9:12 Hebrew; Septuagint (compare Acts 15:17) that the remnant of mankind and all the nations who are called by my name may seek the Lord
declares the Lord who does this.
13“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
#
Lev. 26:5 “when the plowman shall overtake the reaper
and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed;
#
Joel 3:18
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall flow with it.
14 #
Jer. 30:3 I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
and #Isa. 61:4 they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
#
Jer. 31:5
they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 #
Jer. 24:6; Ezek. 34:29 I will plant them on their land,
# [Joel 3:20] and they shall never again be uprooted
out of the land #[Jer. 3:18]that I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.
