Amos 6
6
1Woe to those at ease in Tsiyon, and those trusting in Mount Shomeron, the distinguished ones among the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Yisra’ĕl comes!
2Pass over to Kalneh and see, and from there go to Ḥamath the great. Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these reigns, or is their border greater than your border?
3You who are putting off the day of evil, yet bring near the seat of violence,
4who are lying on beds of ivory, and are stretched out on your couches, and are eating lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall,
5who are singing to the sound of the harp, having composed songs for themselves like Dawiḏ,
6who are drinking wine from bowls, and anoint with the finest ointments, yet they have not been pained over the breach of Yosĕph!
7Therefore they shall now go into exile, with the first of the exiles, and the feasting of the stretched-out ones shall cease!
8The Master יהוה has sworn by Himself, יהוה Elohim of hosts declares, “I am loathing the pride of Ya‛aqoḇ, and I have hated his palaces. Therefore I shall deliver up the city and all that is in it.”
9And it shall be, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die.
10And if an uncle, or his undertaker, brings the remains out of the house, he shall say to one inside the house, “Is anyone with you?” and he says, “No,” then he shall say, “Hush!” For we have not remembered the Name of יהוה!
11For look, יהוה is commanding, and He shall strike the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
12Do horses run on a rock? Does one plough it with oxen? For you have turned right-ruling into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,
13you who are rejoicing over a matter of naught, who say, “Have we not taken horns for ourselves by our own strength?”
14“For look, I am raising up a nation against you, O house of Yisra’ĕl,” declares יהוה Elohim of hosts, “and they shall oppress you from the entrance of Ḥamath to the wadi Araḇah.”

then go down to #See 1 Sam. 17:4 Gath of the Philistines.
# [Nah. 3:8] Are you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater than your territory,

# See ch. 3:10 and bring near the seat of violence?
4“Woe to those #[ch. 3:12] who lie on #[Esth. 1:6] beds of ivory
# [ch. 3:12] and stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
# [James 5:5] and calves from the midst of the stall,

Jer. 22:5; 51:14 The Lord God has sworn by himself, declares the Lord, the God of hosts:
“I abhor #ch. 8:7; [Ps. 47:4] the pride of Jacob
and hate his strongholds,

9And #[ch. 5:3]if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 10And when one’s relative, #See 1 Sam. 31:12 the one who anoints him for burial, shall take him up to bring the bones out of the house, and shall say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house, “Is there still anyone with you?” he shall say, “No”; and he shall say, #[ch. 5:13; 8:3]“Silence! We must not mention the name of the Lord.”
11For behold, the Lord commands,
and #[ch. 3:15]the great house shall be struck down into fragments,
and the little house into bits.
12Do horses run on rocks?
Does one plow there#6:12 Or the sea with oxen?
# [ch. 5:7] But you have turned justice into #Deut. 29:18poison
# [ch. 5:7] and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood#6:12 Or into bitter fruit—
13you who rejoice in Lo-debar,#6:13 Lo-debar means nothing
who say, #[1 Kgs. 22:11; Mic. 4:13]“Have we not by our own strength
captured Karnaim#6:13 Karnaim means horns (a symbol of strength) for ourselves?”
14“For behold, #[Jer. 5:15] I will raise up against you a nation,
O house of Israel,” declares the Lord, the God of hosts;
“and they shall oppress you from #2 Kgs. 14:25 Lebo-hamath
