Mark 14

Anointed for Burial
1Now it was two days before Passover and the Feast of Matzah. The ruling kohanim and Torah scholars were searching for a way to grab Yeshua by stealth and kill Him.
2“But not during the festival,” they were saying, “so there won’t be a riot among the people.”
3And while Yeshua was in Bethany at the house of Simon ha-Metzora, reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive oil of pure nard. Breaking open the jar, she poured it over His head.
4But some got angry and said among themselves, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted?
5It could have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor!” And they kept scolding her.
6But Yeshua said, “Leave her alone. Why do you cause trouble for her? She’s done Me a mitzvah.
7For you always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want; but you won’t always have Me.
8She did what she could—she came beforehand to anoint My body for burial.
9Amen, I tell you, wherever the Good News is proclaimed in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
10Then Judah from Kriot, one of the Twelve, went out to the ruling kohanim to betray Yeshua to them.
11They were delighted when they heard this and promised to give him money. And Judah began looking for a chance to hand Him over.
New Covenant at the Last Seder
12Now on the first day of matzah , when they were slaughtering the Passover lamb, Yeshua’s disciples say to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
13He sends two of His disciples and tells them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,
14and wherever he enters, tell the homeowner, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’
15He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16The disciples went out, came to the city, and found just what Yeshua had told them. And they prepared the Passover.
17When it was evening, He came with the Twelve.
18As they were reclining and eating, Yeshua said, “Amen, I tell you, one of you who is eating with Me will betray Me.”
19They began to be sorrowful and to say to Him one by one, “I’m not the one, am I?”
20He said to them, “It’s one of the Twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl.
21For the Son of Man indeed goes, just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born!”
22And while they were eating, He took matzah ; and after He offered the bracha, He broke it and gave it to them and said, “Take; this is My body.”
23And He took a cup; and after giving thanks, He gave to them and they all drank from it.
24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
25Amen, I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”
Denial Predicted
26After singing the Hallel, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
27And Yeshua said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
28But after I’m raised up, I will go before you to the Galilee.”
29Peter said to Him, “Even though all fall away, I won’t!”
30And Yeshua said to him, “Amen, I tell you, today—this very night—before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
31But Peter kept insisting exceedingly, “Even if I must die with You, I’ll never deny You!” And they all were saying the same.
A Night of Painful Prayer
32Then they come to a place whose name is Gethsemane; and Yeshua says to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33He takes with Him Peter, Jacob, and John; and He began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
34And He tells them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch.”
35Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and began praying that if possible this hour might pass Him by.
36And He was saying, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You! Take this cup from Me! Yet not what I will, but what You will.”
37Then He comes and finds them sleeping; and He tells Peter, “Simon, you’re asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
38Keep watching and praying, so that you do not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39Again He went away and prayed, saying the same words.
40And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy. They didn’t know what to answer Him.
41And He comes the third time and says to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of sinners.
42Get up, let’s go! Look, My betrayer is near.”
Betrayed and Abandoned
43Right away, while Yeshua was still speaking, Judah comes up, one of the Twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the ruling kohanim, Torah scholars, and elders.
44Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “The One I kiss, He’s the One! Seize Him and lead Him away under guard.”
45As soon as Judah came, he drew near to Yeshua and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
46Then they threw their hands on Yeshua and seized Him.
47But one of the bystanders, drawing his sword, struck the servant of the kohen gadol and cut off his ear.
48Yeshua said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, to capture Me as you would against a revolutionary?
49Every day I was with you in the Temple teaching, and you didn’t seize Me. But this is so that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.”
50And all fled, abandoning Him.
51A certain young man was following Him, with nothing but a linen cloth around his body, and they grabbed him.
52But he ran away naked, leaving behind the linen cloth.
Falsely Charged
53Then they led Yeshua away to the kohen gadol . And all the ruling kohanim, elders, and Torah scholars gathered.
54Peter had followed Him from a distance, right into the courtyard of the kohen gadol . He was sitting with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
55Now the ruling kohanim and all the Sanhedrin kept trying to get evidence against Yeshua so they could put Him to death, but they weren’t finding any.
56Many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony wasn’t consistent.
57Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying,
58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’”
59Yet even then, their testimony didn’t agree.
60The kohen gadol stood up in the middle and questioned Yeshua, saying, “Do You have no answer? What is this they’re testifying against You?”
61But keeping silent, Yeshua did not answer. Again the kohen gadol questioned Him, “Are you Mashiach, Son of the Blessed One?”
62“I am,” said Yeshua, “and you shall see ‘the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Powerful One,’ and ‘coming with the clouds of heaven’!”
63Tearing his clothes, the kohen gadol says, “Why do we still need witnesses?
64You’ve heard the blasphemy. What seems right to you?” Then all condemned Him as deserving death.
65Some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, saying, “Prophesy!” Also the guards slapped Him around.
The Rooster Crows
66As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the kohen gadol comes by.
67Seeing Peter warming himself, she looked straight at him. “You also were with Yeshua of Natzeret,” she says.
68But he denied it, saying, “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about!” Then he went outside to the gateway, and a rooster crowed.
69Seeing him, the servant girl began again to tell the bystanders, “This is one of them.”
70But again he denied it. And a little while later, the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “Surely you’re one of them, for you’re also a Galilean.”
71But he began to curse himself and to swear an oath: “I do not know this Man you’re talking about!”
72Right then, a rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter called to mind the word Yeshua had said to him: “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he broke down and began to weep.

The Plot against Jesus
(Mt 26.1–5; Lk 22.1–2; Jn 11.45–53)
1 #
Ex 12.1–27
It was now two days before the Festival of Passover and Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were looking for a way to arrest Jesus secretly and put him to death. 2“We must not do it during the festival,” they said, “or the people might riot.”
Jesus is Anointed at Bethany
(Mt 26.6–13; Jn 12.1–8)

Lk 7.37–38
Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a dreaded skin disease. While Jesus was eating, a woman came in with an alabaster jar full of a very expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus' head. 4Some of the people there became angry and said to one another, “What was the use of wasting the perfume? 5It could have been sold for more than 300 silver coins#14.5 silver coins: See 6.37. and the money given to the poor!” And they criticized her harshly.
6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a fine and beautiful thing for me. 7#Deut 15.11You will always have poor people with you, and any time you want to, you can help them. But you will not always have me. 8She did what she could; she poured perfume on my body to prepare it ahead of time for burial. 9Now, I assure you that wherever the gospel is preached all over the world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
(Mt 26.14–16; Lk 22.3–6)
10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them. 11They were pleased to hear what he had to say, and promised to give him money. So Judas started looking for a good chance to hand Jesus over to them.
Jesus Eats the Passover Meal with his Disciples
(Mt 26.17–25; Lk 22.7–14, 21–23; Jn 13.21–30)
12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day the lambs for the Passover meal were killed, Jesus' disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and get the Passover meal ready for you?”
13Then Jesus sent two of them with these instructions: “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him 14to the house he enters, and say to the owner of the house: ‘The Teacher says, Where is the room where my disciples and I will eat the Passover meal?’ 15Then he will show you a large upstairs room, prepared and furnished, where you will get everything ready for us.”
16The disciples left, went to the city, and found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
17When it was evening, Jesus came with the twelve disciples. 18#Ps 41.9While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you that one of you will betray me — one who is eating with me.”
19The disciples were upset and began to ask him, one after the other, “Surely you don't mean me, do you?”
20Jesus answered, “It will be one of you twelve, one who dips his bread in the dish with me. 21The Son of Man will die as the Scriptures say he will; but how terrible for that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born!”
The Lord's Supper
(Mt 26.26–30; Lk 22.14–20; 1 Cor 11.23–25)
22While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. “Take it,” he said, “this is my body.”
23Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and handed it to them; and they all drank from it. 24#Ex 24.8; Jer 31.31–34Jesus said, “This is my blood which is poured out for many, my blood which seals God's covenant. 25I tell you, I will never again drink this wine until the day I drink the new wine in the Kingdom of God.”
26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
(Mt 26.31–35; Lk 22.31–34; Jn 13.36–38)
27 #
Zech 13.7
Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, ‘God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep will all be scattered.’ 28#Mt 28.16But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you.”
29Peter answered, “I will never leave you, even though all the rest do!”
30Jesus said to Peter, “I tell you that before the cock crows twice tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.”
31Peter answered even more strongly, “I will never say that, even if I have to die with you!”
And all the other disciples said the same thing.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
(Mt 26.36–46; Lk 22.39–46)
32They came to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took Peter, James, and John with him. Distress and anguish came over him, 34and he said to them, “The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch.”
35He went a little farther on, threw himself on the ground, and prayed that, if possible, he might not have to go through that time of suffering. 36“Father,” he prayed, “my Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want.”
37Then he returned and found the three disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Weren't you able to stay awake even for one hour?” 38And he said to them, “Keep watch, and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39He went away once more and prayed, saying the same words. 40Then he came back to the disciples and found them asleep; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to say to him.
41When he came back the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come! Look, the Son of Man is now being handed over to the power of sinners. 42Get up, let us go. Look, here is the man who is betraying me!”
The Arrest of Jesus
(Mt 26.47–56; Lk 22.47–53; Jn 18.3–12)
43Jesus was still speaking when Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, and sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders. 44The traitor had given the crowd a signal: “The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest him and take him away under guard.”
45As soon as Judas arrived, he went up to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” and kissed him. 46So they arrested Jesus and held him tight. 47But one of those standing there drew his sword and struck at the High Priest's slave, cutting off his ear. 48Then Jesus spoke up and said to them, “Did you have to come with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were an outlaw? 49#Lk 19.47; 21.37Day after day I was with you teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.”
50Then all the disciples left him and ran away.
51A certain young man, dressed only in a linen cloth, was following Jesus. They tried to arrest him, 52but he ran away naked, leaving the cloth behind.
Jesus before the Council
(Mt 26.57–68; Lk 22.54–55, 63–71; Jn 18.13–14, 19–24)
53Then Jesus was taken to the High Priest's house, where all the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the Law were gathering. 54Peter followed from a distance and went into the courtyard of the High Priest's house. There he sat down with the guards, keeping himself warm by the fire. 55The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they could not find any. 56Many witnesses told lies against Jesus, but their stories did not agree.
57Then some men stood up and told this lie against Jesus: 58#Jn 2.19“We heard him say, ‘I will tear down this Temple which men have made, and after three days I will build one that is not made by men.’ ” 59Not even they, however, could make their stories agree.
60The High Priest stood up in front of them all and questioned Jesus, “Have you no answer to the accusation they bring against you?”
61But Jesus kept quiet and would not say a word. Again the High Priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed God?”
62 #
Dan 7.13
“I am,” answered Jesus, “and you will all see the Son of Man seated on the right of the Almighty and coming with the clouds of heaven!”
63The High Priest tore his robes and said, “We don't need any more witnesses! 64#Lev 24.16You heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?”
They all voted against him: he was guilty and should be put to death.
65Some of them began to spit on Jesus, and they blindfolded him and hit him. “Guess who hit you!” they said. And the guards took him and slapped him.
Peter Denies Jesus
(Mt 26.69–75; Lk 22.56–62; Jn 18.15–18, 25–27)
66Peter was still down in the courtyard when one of the High Priest's servant women came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked straight at him and said, “You, too, were with Jesus of Nazareth.”
68But he denied it. “I don't know… I don't understand what you are talking about,” he answered, and went out into the passage. Just then a cock crowed.#14.68 Some manuscripts do not have Just then a cock crowed.
69The servant woman saw him there and began to repeat to the bystanders, “He is one of them!” 70But Peter denied it again.
A little while later the bystanders accused Peter again, “You can't deny that you are one of them, because you, too, are from Galilee.”
71Then Peter said, “I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know the man you are talking about!”
72Just then a cock crowed a second time, and Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice, you will say three times that you do not know me.” And he broke down and cried.
