Matthew 6

Righteous Living
1“Beware of practicing your righteousness before others to be seen by them; otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2So whenever you do tzadakah, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, so that they may be glorified by men. Amen, I tell you, they have their reward in full!
3But when you do tzadakah, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4so that your tzadakah may be in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, shall reward you.
5“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Amen, I tell you, they have their reward in full!
6But you, when you pray, go into your inner room; and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, shall reward you.
7And when you are praying, do not babble on and on like the pagans; for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
9“Therefore, pray in this way: ‘Our Father in heaven, sanctified be Your name.
10Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us this day our daily bread.
12And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
14“For if you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.
16“And whenever you fast, do not become sad-faced like the hypocrites, for they neglect their faces to make their fasting evident to men. Amen, I tell you, they have their reward in full!
17But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18so that your fasting won’t be evident to men, but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
19“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in or steal.
21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22“The eye is the lamp of the body. Therefore if your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.
23But if your eye is bad, your body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stick by one and look down on the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
Overcoming Worry with Trust
25“So I say to you, do not worry about your life—what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?
26“Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your Father in heaven feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
28And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They neither toil nor spin.
29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.
30Now if in this way God clothes the grass—which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow—will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’
32For the pagans eagerly pursue all these things; yet your Father in heaven knows that you need all these.
33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Teaching About Fasting
16#Mt 6:2; Ps 35:13“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces so they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. 17#Ru 3:3But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18#Mt 6:4; 6:6so that you will not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in secret. Treasures in Heaven
Lk 12:33–34
19#Heb 13:5; Lk 12:21“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 20#Lk 12:33; Mt 19:21But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in nor steal, 21#Lk 12:34for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
The Light of the Body
Lk 11:34–36
22“The light of the body is the eye. Therefore, if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23#Mt 20:15; Mk 7:22But if your eye is unclear, your whole body will be full of darkness. Therefore, if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
God and Money
24#Lk 16:13; 16:11; 16:9“No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Care and Anxiety
Lk 12:22–34
25#Mt 6:31; 6:34; Php 4:6“Therefore, I say to you, take no thought about your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body than clothing? 26#Job 38:41; Ps 147:9Look at the birds of the air, for they do not sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they? 27Who among you by taking thought can add a cubit#A cubit is about half a meter. to his stature?
28#Mt 6:25; 6:31“Why take thought about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: They neither work, nor do they spin. 29#1Ki 10:4–7; 2Ch 9:4–6Yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. 30#Mt 8:26; 14:31Therefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is here and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31#1Pe 5:7Therefore, take no thought, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32#Mt 6:8; Lk 12:30(For the Gentiles seek after all these things.) For your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. 33#1Ti 4:8; 1Ki 3:11–13But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you. 34#Mt 6:25Therefore, take no thought about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take thought about the things of itself. Sufficient to the day is the trouble thereof.
