Joshua 1
1
Chazak! Be strong!
1Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of Adonai that Adonai spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide saying:
2“My servant Moses is dead. So now, arise, you and all these people, cross over this Jordan to the land that I am giving to them—to Bnei-Yisrael.
3Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I am giving to you, as I spoke to Moses.
4From the wilderness and this Lebanon to the great river, the Euphrates River—all the land of the Hittites— to the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory.
5No one will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you or forsake you.
6Chazak! Be strong! For you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their fathers to give them.
7Only be very strong, and resolute to observe diligently the Torah which Moses, My servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so you may be successful wherever you go.
8This book of the Torah should not depart from your mouth—you are to meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will make your ways prosperous and then you will be successful.
9Have I not commanded you? Chazak! Be strong! Do not be terrified or dismayed, for Adonai your God is with you wherever you go.”
10Then Joshua commanded the officials of the people saying:
11“Go through the camp and charge the people saying: ‘Prepare provisions, for within three days you will be crossing over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which Adonai your God is giving you to possess it.’”
12Then Joshua spoke to the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh saying:
13“Remember the word that Moses the servant of Adonai commanded you saying: ‘Adonai your God has given you rest, and has assigned to you this land.’
14Your wives, your little ones and your cattle will remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but you will cross over before your brothers armed, all the mighty men of valor, and will help them
15until Adonai gives your brothers rest, as He has given you, and they also possess the land that Adonai your God is giving them. Then you will return to the land of your inheritance, and possess what Moses the servant of Adonai gave you, beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.”
16Then they answered Joshua saying: “All that you have commanded us, we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.
17Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. Only may Adonai your God be with you as He was with Moses.
18Whoever rebels against your command and does not obey your words in all that you command him, he will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!”

Joshua 1
1
Joshua becomes the leader of Israel
1Moses, the LORD's servant, was dead. So the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had been the assistant of Moses. The LORD said:
2My servant Moses is dead. Now you must lead Israel across the River Jordan into the land I'm giving to all of you. 3Wherever you go, I'll give you that land, as I promised Moses.#Dt 11.24,25. 4It will reach from the Southern Desert to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, and to the north-east as far as the great River Euphrates. It will include the land of the Hittites,#1.4 the land…Hittites: This refers to the northern part of Syria, which had been the southernmost part of the Hittite empire. and the land from here at the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. 5Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.#Dt 31.6,8; He 13.5.
6-8Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law#1.6-8 the Law: Or “Teachings”. he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.#Dt 31.6,7,23.
9I've commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the LORD your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.
Israel crosses the River Jordan and conquers Jericho
The eastern tribes promise to help
10Joshua ordered the tribal leaders 11to go through the camp and tell everyone:
In a few days we will cross the River Jordan to take the land that the LORD our God is giving us. So prepare as much food as you'll need for the march into the land.
12Joshua told the men of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh:#1.12 East Manasseh: The half of Manasseh that settled east of the River Jordan.#Nu 32.28-32; Dt 3.18-20; Js 22.1-6.
13-14The LORD's servant Moses said that the LORD our God has given you land here on the east side of the River Jordan, where you could live in peace. Your wives and children and your animals can stay here in the land Moses gave you. But all of you who can serve in our army must pick up your weapons and lead the men of the other tribes across the River Jordan. They are your relatives, so you must help them 15conquer the land that the LORD is giving them. The LORD will give peace to them as he has given peace to you, and then you can come back and settle here in the land that Moses promised you.
16The men answered:
We'll cross the River Jordan and help our relatives. We'll fight anywhere you send us. 17-18If the LORD our God will help you as he helped Moses, and if you are strong and brave, we will obey you as we obeyed Moses. We'll even put to death anyone who rebels against you or refuses to obey you.
