Job Remembers Better Days
1Again Job took up his discourse saying:
2“O that I could be as in the months gone by, as in the days when God watched over me,
3when His lamp shone above my head, when by His light I walked through darkness;
4as I was in the days of my prime, when God’s intimate friendship was upon my tent,
5when Shaddai was still with me, and my children surrounded me;
6when my steps were bathed with butter, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil.
7When I went out to the city gate, and secured my seat in the public square,
8young men would see me and hide, old men would rise and stand;
9princes refrained from talking and put their hand over their mouths;
10the voice of the nobles was hushed and their tongue stuck to their palate.
11“When the ear heard, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw me, it commended me;
12for I saved the poor who cried for help, and the orphan who had no one to help him;
13the blessing of the dying man came on me, and I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.
14I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was as my robe and turban.
15I was eyes for the blind and feet for the lame;
16I was a father to the needy, and I investigated the case of one I did not know.
17I broke the jaws of the unjust, and snatched the prey out of his teeth.
18“Then I thought, ‘I will die in my nest, and multiply my days like the sand.
19My roots reach the water, and dew lies on my branches all night.
20My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand.’
21“People listened to me and waited, and kept silent for my advice.
22After I had spoken, they spoke no more; my words fell on them drop by drop.
23They waited for me as for the rain, and opened their mouths as for spring rain.
24When I joked with them, they hardly believed it; they did not cause the light of my face to fall.
25I chose their way and sat as their chief; I lived as a king among the troops; I was like one who comforts mourners.

Job’s Final Defense
1#Job 27:1Moreover Job continued his discourse:
2“Oh, that I were as in months past,
as in the days when God watched over me;
3#Job 18:6; Ps 18:28 when His lamp shone upon my head,
and when by His light I walked through darkness;
4#Ps 25:14; Pr 3:32 as I was in the days of my autumn youth,
when the friendly counsel of God was over my tent;
5#Ps 128:3 when the Almighty was still with me,
when my children were around me;
6#Job 20:17; Ps 81:16 when my steps were bathed in butter,
and the rock poured out rivers of oil for me!
7“When I went out to the gate of the city,
when I took my seat in the square,
8the young men saw me and hid themselves,
and the aged arose and stood up.
9#Job 21:5 The princes refrained from talking,
and put their hand on their mouth.
10#Ps 137:6; Eze 3:26 The nobles held their peace,
and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.
11When the ear heard, then it blessed me;
and when the eye saw, then it approved me,
12#Ps 72:12; Pr 21:13 because I delivered the poor who cried,
and the fatherless, and him who had none to help him.
13#Isa 27:13 The blessing of the perishing man came upon me,
and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
14#Ps 132:9; Isa 59:17 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me;
my judgment was like a robe and a diadem.
15#Nu 10:31 I was eyes for the blind,
and I was feet for the lame.
16#Pr 29:7 I was a father to the poor,
and I searched out the case that I did not know.
17#Ps 3:7; Pr 30:14 I broke the jaws of the wicked
and plucked the victim from his teeth.
18“Then I said, ‘I will die in my nest,
and I will multiply my days as the sand.
19#Job 18:16; Jer 17:8 My root was spread out by the waters,
and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
20#Ge 49:24; Isa 40:31 My glory was fresh in me,
and my bow was renewed in my hand.’
21“Men listened to me and waited,
and kept silence for my counsel.
22#Dt 32:2 After my words they did not speak again,
and my speech settled on them like dew.
23#Zec 10:1 They waited for me as for the rain,
and they opened their mouth wide as for the spring rain.
24If I mocked at them, they did not believeit,
and the light of my countenance they did not cast down.
25I chose the way for them and sat as chief,
and lived as a king in the army,
as one who comforts mourners.
