Anticipating Hostility at Sukkot
1After these events, Yeshua was walking about in the Galilee. He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Judean leaders wanted to kill Him.
2Now the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
3Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so Your disciples also may see the works You are doing.
4No one who wants to be well known does everything in secret. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world!”
5For not even His brothers were trusting in Him.
6Therefore Yeshua said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always at hand.
7The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify that its works are evil.
8You go on up to the Feast. I’m not going to this feast, because My time hasn’t yet fully come.”
9After saying these things, He stayed in the Galilee.
10But after His brothers went to the Feast, He also went, not openly but secretly.
11Then the Judean leaders were searching for Him at the Feast and kept asking, “Where is that fellow?”
12There was a lot of murmuring about Him in the crowds. Some were saying, “He is good.” But others were saying, “Not so! He leads the people astray.”
13Yet no one spoke openly about Him for fear of the Judean leaders.
Teaching at the Temple
14About halfway through the Feast, Yeshua went up to the Temple and began teaching.
15Then the Judean leaders were amazed, saying, “How does this man know so much, having never been taught?”
16Yeshua answered, “My teaching is not from Me, but from Him who sent Me.
17If anyone wants to do His will, he will know whether My teaching comes from God or it is Myself speaking.
18Whoever speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
19Hasn’t Moses given you the Torah? Yet none of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
20The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who’s trying to kill you?”
21Yeshua answered, “I did one good work, and all of you are amazed.
22Because Moses has given you circumcision (though it is not from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a man on Shabbat.
23If a man receives circumcision on Shabbat so that the Torah of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry that I healed a man’s whole body on Shabbat?
24Do not judge by appearance, but judge righteously.”
25Then some of the people from Jerusalem were saying, “Isn’t this the person they’re trying to kill?
26Look, He speaks openly and they’re saying nothing to Him. Can it be that the leaders know He is the Messiah?
27But we know where this person is from. But the Messiah, whenever He may come, no one knows where He is from.”
28Then, while teaching in the Temple courts, Yeshua cried out, “You know both who I am and where I am from! I have not come on My own, but the One who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
29but I know Him because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
30Then they were trying to seize Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
31Yet many from the crowd believed in Him and were saying, “When the Messiah comes, He won’t perform more signs than this person has, will He?”
32The Pharisees heard people in the crowd murmuring these things about Him, and the ruling kohanim and Pharisees sent guards to arrest Him.
33Yeshua said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
34You will look for Me but will not find Me. Where I am, you cannot come.”
35The Judean leaders then said among themselves, “Where is this person about to go that we shall not find Him? He’s not going to the Diaspora to teach the Greeks, is He?
36What did He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me but will not find Me. Where I am, you cannot come’?”
Satisfying Spiritual Thirst
37On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Yeshua stood up and cried out loudly, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
38Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture says, ‘out of his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
39Now He said this about the Ruach, whom those who trusted in Him were going to receive; for the Ruach was not yet given, since Yeshua was not yet glorified.
40When they heard these words, some of the crowd said, “This man really is the Prophet.”
41Others were saying, “This is the Messiah.” Still others were saying, “The Messiah doesn’t come from the Galilee, does He?
42Didn’t the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, David’s town?”
43So a division arose in the crowd because of Yeshua.
44Some wanted to capture Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
Religious Adversaries
45Then the guards returned to the ruling kohanim and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him?”
46“Never has anyone spoken like this man,” the guards answered.
47The Pharisees responded, “You haven’t been led astray also, have you?
48Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
49No, but this mob that doesn’t know the Torah—they are cursed!”
50Nicodemus, the one who had come to Yeshua before and was one of them, said to them,
51“Our Torah doesn’t judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he’s doing, does it?”
52They answered him, “You aren’t from the Galilee too, are you? Search, and see that no prophet comes out of the Galilee!”
53Then everyone went to his own house.

1After this, Yeshua traveled around in the Galil, intentionally avoiding Y’hudah because the Judeans were out to kill him. 2But the festival of Sukkot in Y’hudah was near; 3so his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go into Y’hudah, so that your talmidim can see the miracles you do; 4for no one who wants to become known acts in secret. If you’re doing these things, show yourself to the world!” 5(His brothers spoke this way because they had not put their trust in him.) 6Yeshua said to them, “My time has not yet come; but for you, any time is right. 7The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me, because I keep telling it how wicked its ways are. 8You, go on up to the festival; as for me, I am not going up to this festival now, because the right time for me has not yet come.” 9Having said this, he stayed on in the Galil.
10But after his brothers had gone up to the festival, he too went up, not publicly but in secret. 11At the festival, the Judeans were looking for him. “Where is he?” they asked. 12And among the crowds there was much whispering about him. Some said, “He’s a good man”; but others said, “No, he is deceiving the masses.” 13However, no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Judeans.
14Not until the festival was half over did Yeshua go up to the Temple courts and begin to teach. 15The Judeans were surprised: “How does this man know so much without having studied?” they asked. 16So Yeshua gave them an answer: “My teaching is not my own, it comes from the One who sent me. 17If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether my teaching is from God or I speak on my own. 18A person who speaks on his own is trying to win praise for himself; but a person who tries to win praise for the one who sent him is honest, there is nothing false about him. 19Didn’t Moshe give you the Torah? Yet not one of you obeys the Torah! Why are you out to kill me?” 20“You have a demon!” the crowd answered. “Who’s out to kill you?” 21Yeshua answered them, “I did one thing; and because of this, all of you are amazed. 22Moshe gave you b’rit-milah — not that it came from Moshe but from the Patriarchs — and you do a boy’s b’rit-milah on Shabbat. 23If a boy is circumcised on Shabbat so that the Torah of Moshe will not be broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man’s whole body well on Shabbat? 24Stop judging by surface appearances, and judge the right way!”
25Some of the Yerushalayim people said, “Isn’t this the man they’re out to kill? 26Yet here he is, speaking openly; and they don’t say anything to him. It couldn’t be, could it, that the authorities have actually concluded he’s the Messiah? 27Surely not — we know where this man comes from; but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he comes from.” 28Whereupon Yeshua, continuing to teach in the Temple courts, cried out, “Indeed you do know me! And you know where I’m from! And I have not come on my own! The One who sent me is real. But him you don’t know! 29I do know him, because I am with him, and he sent me!”
30At this, they tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him; because his time had not yet come. 31However, many in the crowd put their trust in him and said, “When the Messiah comes, will he do more miracles than this man has done?”
32The P’rushim heard the crowd whispering these things about Yeshua; so the head cohanim and the P’rushim sent some of the Temple guards to arrest him. 33Yeshua said, “I will be with you only a little while longer; then I will go away to the One who sent me. 34You will look for me and not find me; indeed, where I am, you cannot come.” 35The Judeans said to themselves, “Where is this man about to go, that we won’t find him? Does he intend to go to the Greek Diaspora and teach the Greek-speaking Jews? 36And when he says, ‘You will look for me and not find me; indeed, where I am, you cannot come’ — what does he mean?”
37Now on the last day of the festival, Hoshana Rabbah, Yeshua stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him keep coming to me and drinking! 38Whoever puts his trust in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his inmost being!” 39(Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who trusted in him were to receive later — the Spirit had not yet been given, because Yeshua had not yet been glorified.)
40On hearing his words, some people in the crowd said, “Surely this man is ‘the prophet’”; 41others said, “This is the Messiah.” But others said, “How can the Messiah come from the Galil? 42Doesn’t the Tanakh say that the Messiah is from the seed of David and comes from Beit-Lechem, the village where David lived?” 43So the people were divided because of him. 44Some wanted to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him.
45The guards came back to the head cohanim and the P’rushim, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” 46The guards replied, “No one ever spoke the way this man speaks!” 47“You mean you’ve been taken in as well?” the P’rushim retorted. 48“Has any of the authorities trusted him? Or any of the P’rushim? No! 49True, these ‘am-ha’aretz do, but they know nothing about the Torah, they are under a curse!”
50Nakdimon, the man who had gone to Yeshua before and was one of them, said to them, 51“Our Torah doesn’t condemn a man — does it? — until after hearing from him and finding out what he’s doing.” 52They replied, “You aren’t from the Galil too, are you? Study the Tanakh, and see for yourself that no prophet comes from the Galil!” 53Then they all left, each one to his own home.
