John 10

The Faithful Hear the Shepherd’s Voice
1“Amen, amen I tell you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.
2But he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice. The shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4“When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them; and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
5They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
6Yeshua told them this parable, but they did not understand what He was telling them.
7So Yeshua said again, “Amen, amen I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8All those who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9I am the gate! If anyone comes in through Me, he will be saved. He will come and go and find pasture.
10The thief comes only to steal, slaughter, and destroy. I have come that they might have life, and have it abundantly!
11“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
12The hired worker is not the shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. He sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and flees. Then the wolf snatches and scatters the sheep.
13The man is only a hired hand and does not care about the sheep.
14“I am the Good Shepherd. I know My own and My own know Me,
15just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.
16I have other sheep that are not from this fold; those also I must lead, and they will listen to My voice. So there shall be one flock, one Shepherd.
17“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, so that I may take it up again.
18No one takes it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it up again. This command I received from My Father.”
19Again a division arose among the Judeans because of these words.
20Many of them were saying, “He has a demon. He’s insane! Why listen to Him?”
21Others said, “These are not the sayings of someone who is plagued by a demon. A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can it?”
Some Despise the Light and Harden
22Then came Hanukkah; it was winter in Jerusalem.
23Yeshua was walking in the Temple around Solomon’s Colonnade.
24Then the Judean leaders surrounded Him, saying, “How long will You hold us in suspense? If You are the Messiah, tell us outright!”
25Yeshua answered them, “I told you, but you don’t believe! The works I do in My Father’s name testify concerning Me.
26But you don’t believe, because you are not My sheep.
27My sheep hear My voice. I know them, and they follow Me.
28I give them eternal life! They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. And no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
30I and the Father are one.”
31Again the Judean leaders picked up stones to stone Him.
32Yeshua answered them, “I’ve shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these are you going to stone Me?”
33The Judean leaders answered, “We aren’t stoning you for a good work, but for blasphemy. Though You are a man, You make Yourself God!”
34Yeshua answered them, “Isn’t it written in your Writings, ‘I have said you are gods’?
35If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the Word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
36do you say of Him, the One the Father set apart and sent into the world, ‘You speak blasphemy,’ because I said, ‘I am Ben-Elohim’?
37“If I don’t do the works of My Father, don’t believe Me!
38But if I do, even if you don’t trust Me, trust the deeds. Then you may come to know and continue to understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.”
39Therefore they tried to capture Him again, but He escaped from their hand.
40Again He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first started immersing, and He stayed there.
41Many people came to Him and were saying, “John performed no sign, but all John said about this man was true.”
42And many trusted in Him there.

The Shepherd and His Sheep
1Jesus said, “I tell you the truth. The man who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The man who guards the door opens it for him. And the sheep listen to the voice of the shepherd. He calls his own sheep, using their names, and he leads them out. 4He brings all of his sheep out. Then he goes ahead of them and leads them. They follow him because they know his voice. 5But they will never follow a stranger. They will run away from him because they don’t know his voice.” 6Jesus told the people this story, but they did not understand what it meant.
Jesus Is the Good Shepherd
7So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth. I am the door for the sheep. 8All the people who came before me were thieves and robbers. The sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the door. The person who enters through me will be saved. He will be able to come in and go out and find pasture. 10A thief comes to steal and kill and destroy. But I came to give life—life in all its fullness.
11“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. 12The worker who is paid to keep the sheep is different from the shepherd who owns them. So when the worker sees a wolf coming, he runs away and leaves the sheep alone. Then the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them. 13The man runs away because he is only a paid worker. He does not really care for the sheep.
14“I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and my sheep know me, 15just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I give my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not in this flock here. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17The Father loves me because I give my life. I give my life so that I can take it back again. 18No one takes it away from me. I give my own life freely. I have the right to give my life, and I have the right to take it back. This is what my Father commanded me to do.”
19Again the Jews did not agree with each other because of these words Jesus said. 20Many of them said, “A demon has come into him and made him crazy. Why listen to him?”
21But others said, “A man who is crazy with a demon does not say things like this. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
22The time came for the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. This was during the winter. 23Jesus was walking in the Temple in Solomon’s Porch. 24The Jews gathered around him and said, “How long will you make us wonder about you? If you are the Christ, then tell us plainly.”
Jesus Is the Son of God
25Jesus answered, “I told you already, but you did not believe. I do miracles in my Father’s name. Those miracles show who I am. 26But you don’t believe because you are not my sheep. 27My sheep listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never die. And no person can steal them out of my hand. 29My Father gave my sheep to me. He is greater than all, and no person can steal my sheep out of my Father’s hand. 30The Father and I are one.”
31Again the Jews picked up stones to kill Jesus. 32But Jesus said to them, “I have done many good works from the Father. Which of these good works are you killing me for?”
33The Jews answered, “We are not killing you for any good work you did. But you say things that are against God. You are only a man, but you say you are the same as God!”
34Jesus answered, “It is written in your law that God said, ‘I have said you are gods!’# Quotation from Psalm 82:6. 35This Scripture called those people gods, the people who received God’s message. And Scripture is always true. 36So why do you say that I speak against God because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? I am the one God chose and sent into the world. 37If I don’t do what my Father does, then don’t believe me. 38But if I do what my Father does, even though you don’t believe in me, believe what I do. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”
39They tried to take Jesus again, but he escaped from them.
40Then Jesus went back across the Jordan River to the place where John had first baptized. Jesus stayed there, 41and many people came to him. They said, “John never did a miracle. But everything John said about this man is true.” 42And in that place many believed in Jesus.
