Jeremiah 33

The Secret of Redemption
1Then the word of Adonai came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still confined in the guard’s courtyard, saying:
2Thus says Adonai the Maker, Adonai who formed it to make it firm —Adonai is His Name.
3“Call to Me, and I will answer you— I will tell you great and hidden things, which you do not know.”
4For thus says Adonai, the God of Israel: “Concerning the houses of this city and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are torn down against the siege ramps and against the sword,
5they are coming to fight with the Chaldeans, but they are about to fill them with the dead bodies of the people whom I will slay in My anger and in My fury. I have hidden My face from this city because of all their wickedness.
6“Indeed, I will bring it health and healing, and I will surely heal them. I will reveal to them an abundance of shalom and truth.
7I will restore Judah from exile and Israel from exile, and will rebuild them, as in former times.
8I will also cleanse them from all their iniquity in which they have sinned against Me, and I will pardon all their wrongs in which they have sinned against Me and in which they have rebelled against Me.
9“Then this city will be to Me for a name of joy, praise and glory before all the nations of the earth, which will hear all the good that I do for them, so they will fear and tremble because of all the good and for all the shalom that I do for it.”
Voice of the Bridegroom
10Thus says Adonai: “Yet again in this place—which you are saying is a waste without man or beast, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the desolate, without man, without inhabitant and without beast—there will be heard
11the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of them who say: ‘Give thanks to Adonai-Tzva’ot, for Adonai is good, for His love endures forever!’ as they bring offerings of thanksgiving into the House of Adonai. For I will restore the land from the exile as it was at first,” declares Adonai.
12Thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot: “Yet again will there be in this place, which is waste, without man and without beast, and in all its cities, a pasture of shepherds making their flocks lie down.
13In the towns of the hill country, in the towns of the foothills, in the towns of the South, in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah, will the flocks again pass under the hands of one who counts them,” declares Adonai.
Righteous Branch of David
14“Behold, days are coming” —it is a declaration of Adonai— “when I will fulfill the good word I spoke concerning the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah.
15In those days and at that time, I will cause a Branch of Righteousness to spring up for David, and He will execute justice and righteousness in the land.
16In those days will Judah be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the Name by which He will be called: Adonai our Righteousness.”
17For thus says Adonai: “For David, there will not be cut off a man sitting on the throne of the house of Israel,
18nor will the Levitical kohanim ever lack a man before Me to offer burnt offering, to burn grain offerings and to make sacrifices continually.”
19And the word of Adonai came to Jeremiah, saying,
20thus says Adonai: “If you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that day and night would not be at in their appointed time,
21only then may My covenant be broken with My servant David, that he would not have a son to reign on his throne, and the Levitical kohanim would not be My ministers.
22As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David My servant, and the Levites who minister to Me.”
23The word of Adonai came to Jeremiah, saying:
24“Have you not noticed what this people have spoken, saying: ‘The two families which Adonai did choose, He has rejected them’? Thus they despise My people—no longer a nation before them.”
25Thus says Adonai: “If I have not made My covenant of day and night firm, and the fixed patterns ordering the heavens and earth,
26only then would I reject the offspring of Jacob, and of My servant David so that I would not take from his offspring rulers over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore them from their exile, and have compassion on them.”

Jeremiah 33
33
Restoration of Jerusalem. 1The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time while he was still confined in the court of the guard: 2Thus says the Lord who made the earth, giving it shape and stability, Lord is his name: 3Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you great things beyond the reach of your knowledge.#Is 48:6. 4Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are being torn down because of the siegeworks and the sword:#Jer 32:24. 5men come to battle the Chaldeans, and to fill these houses with the corpses of those whom I have struck down in my raging anger, when I hid my face from this city because of all their wickedness.#Jer 21:4–6.
6Look! I am bringing the city recovery and healing; I will heal them and reveal to them an abundance of lasting peace.#Is 57:18. 7I will restore the fortunes of Judah and Israel, and rebuild them as they were in the beginning.#Jer 30:3; 32:44. 8I will purify them of all the guilt they incurred by sinning against me; I will forgive all their offenses by which they sinned and rebelled against me.#Ez 36:25. 9Then this city shall become joy for me, a name of praise and pride, before all the nations of the earth, as they hear of all the good I am doing for them. They shall fear and tremble because of all the prosperity I give it.
10Thus says the Lord: In this place, about which you say: “It is a waste without people or animals!” and in the cities of Judah, in the streets of Jerusalem now deserted, without people, without inhabitant, without animal, there shall yet be heard#Jer 32:43. 11the song of joy, the song of gladness, the song of the bridegroom, the song of the bride, the song of those bringing thank offerings to the house of the Lord: “Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good; God’s love endures forever.” For I will restore the fortunes of this land as they were in the beginning, says the Lord.#1 Chr 16:34; Ezr 3:11; Ps 136:1.
12Thus says the Lord of hosts: In this place, now a waste, without people or animals, and in all its cities there shall again be sheepfolds for the shepherds to rest their flocks. 13In the cities of the hill country, of the Shephelah and the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin and the neighborhood of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the Lord.
14#This is the longest continuous passage in the Hebrew text of Jeremiah that is missing from the Greek text of Jeremiah. It is probably the work of a postexilic writer who applied parts of Jeremiah’s prophecies to new situations. The hope for an eternal Davidic dynasty (vv. 14–17; cf. 2 Sm 7:11–16) and for a perpetual priesthood and sacrificial system (v. 18) was not realized after the exile. On the canonical authority of the Septuagint, see note on Dn 13:1–14:42. The days are coming—oracle of the Lord—when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15In those days, at that time, I will make a just shoot spring up for David; he shall do what is right and just in the land.#Jer 23:5; Ps 72:1–4, 12–14; Is 11:1. 16In those days Judah shall be saved and Jerusalem shall dwell safely; this is the name they shall call her: “The Lord our justice.” 17For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a successor on the throne of the house of Israel,#2 Sm 7:16; 1 Kgs 2:4; Ps 89:4–5, 29, 36–37. 18nor shall the priests of Levi ever be lacking before me, to sacrifice burnt offerings, to burn cereal offerings, and to make sacrifices.#Ez 44:15–16.
19This word of the Lord also came to Jeremiah: 20Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with day#Jer 31:36–37; Ps 89:37–38. and my covenant with night so that day and night no longer appear in their proper time, 21only then can my covenant with my servant David be broken, so that he will not have a descendant to act as king upon his throne, and my covenant with the priests of Levi who minister to me. 22Just as the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be counted, so I will multiply the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister to me.
23This word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24Have you not noticed what these people are saying: “The Lord has rejected the two tribes he had chosen”? They hold my people in contempt as if it were no longer a nation in their eyes.#Rom 11:1–2. 25#Jer 31:36–37; 32:44. Thus says the Lord: If I have no covenant with day and night, if I did not establish statutes for heaven and earth, 26then I will also reject the descendants of Jacob and of David my servant, no longer selecting from his descendants rulers for the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yes, I will restore their fortunes and show them mercy.
